my BIL is getting married in April. I'm the best man, and holy shit on the expenses is all I can say. We got married by a female jewish rabbi with Elvis in a pink Caddy in Vegas. $550 all in on the "deluxe package" and then got hammered afterwards lol

Don't cheap out on the photos. There are lots of other things you can be cost effective with, but the photos are forever (hopefully 😉). I regret not getting a better photographer and I regret not having a videographer.

We were cheap as hell. We had the taco guy we've known for years cater...but displayed nice. I set up the tables, chairs and dance floor that morning, buddies did teardown. The preacher that did the service and had the church, was a former contractor and neighbor...good deal there too. Being broke, turned out great. That was also 22 years ago.
Thinking about it, the photographer was the one thing I couldn't hustle a deal on...I want to say that was 1500$!

I'm curious . . . (as never being married), what do the wives do with the photos afterwards?
I mean I get that they look at them immediately afterwards, and probably share the best ones online and on 'thank you letters' etc.
Then they make an album.
Maybe blow up the hero shot or 2 of the couple and hang it somewhere in the house . . . but what after that?
Anniversary flashbacks posts on facebook?
Do they look at them occasionally over the years?

(Edit) . . . I'm a hack / enthusiast photographer. I've got some pretty decent gear, same as what many wedding photographers use, minus the 'booths', big strobes etc.
The LAST way I'd ever want to attempt making any money on photography would be at weddings. Not cause I think it would be difficult, but more because if I've talked to 10 wives about their wedding . . . 9 of them would say their photographer sucked and charged too much. F-that.

We did a photographer and disposable cameras on the tables. The ratio of nice wedding pics to ballz pics was about 1:1

But, maybe you have classier friends than I.

First off: They are basically to make the wife happy.

As for what they do with them, don't know. Just before Christmas my brother gave me a box of pics from my Mom's stuff. Looking through them, there's an 8x10 of our wedding party. Wife admits we don't have one up, and haven't seen it since the last move, 10 years. Me being me, never thought about it. Well, I took that pic, and matched the frame with the ones we keep our kids' pics in. Did some minor mods with barb wire from the property and copper wire...country motif. She was thrilled with it as one of her Christmas gifts.

22 years later, and that pic still made her happy. Why, I still don't understand. Don't care really, whatever works!

Second biggest wedding expense was the photo guy. Apx 5k in 2009.
We skipped the video, but paid to get digital proofs of all photos taken and cleanup up images of over 100 images that were in our album. Our photo guy was with us from apx 3pm to midnight.

4K here for photo and videographer. 10k total overall for a backyard wedding. Was super happy with it. Especially with family members that had 100k weddings.

I couldn't tell you who took the picts at our wedding. Got married at Wee Kir O' the Heather wedding chapel in Vegas. Maybe a dozen guests plus the wino in the parking lot that came over to share in the toast. Reception at McDonalds and some fun in the casino afterwards. Still together nearly 30 years later and it's not because of the person/people that took our pictures.

She is dead set on having the video package I am like what the fuck no I am not paying 1800 for a video package when the hell are we ever going to watching the video again wrong answer 😂
Waste of money. We have watched our video once….

MIL/FIL paid a crap ton for our wedding. I wanted to hit Sandals and elope. Way cheaper and not as many people. You should be aware that weddings aren’t for the groom.

We hired pro who had his own studio in an old school professional office complex (think dentist, lawyer, tax accounting brick muti-building type place). Just photos, no video. The package included a very nice 4” thick leather bound photo album. Has a ton of photos and we keep it in the original box in the living room media console. I was super impressed with the quality and the wife loves it. Money well spent IMO. We also got a sizable headshot that is framed and on wall at entry way. Couple other framed pics as well. As I recall, the photographer retained the rights to the pics. It was extra to buy the rights, so we didn’t do that.

Had I not bought a house prior to meeting my now wife, we likely would have done a cheaper weeding. No regrets. That was 15 years ago. Can’t imagine what a wedding costs now.

Weddings are the first step in a women’s plan to separate the guy from his money. Ditch the wedding photog and videographer and invite the best divorce attorney to the wedding to take notes and put him on retainer.

Thank me later.

If you get a GOOD photographer, you may still use a pic or two in the future. We got married in 2010, Vegas Mandalay Bay, reception was at House of Blues. It was a night time wedding, so no dinner. Just appetizers and booze. We have a pic up of us walking through the casino, from behind us, after our ceremony. It has something rad captured by the photographer. It was worth the money for the pic.

The night of my wedding, on the way back up to our suite, rode the elevator with Vince Vaughn. It was ironic and cool..

So we did things a bit differently...

Park setting. BBQ ribs and shit.

Bride piniata, groom pinata, bounce room, clown, magician, egg toss, water balloon toss, no rice, bubbles.

250 people. Outside. Tank tops and shorts only.

It was a bit of a party...

😎

Hope you have a comfortable couch! 😁

Life hack…I put a pretty high end pullout sofa in MaKs room…. The couch is comfy as hell but also has a bitch in memory foam mattress. I don’t mind sleeping in there one bit 🤣

Married for 23 years, that's been over for 14 years. Guess where the $$$ Wedding album is... it's buried on the back shelf in MY home office (yes I kept the house). So, that answers the "does she look at them again" question! At that wedding, so many years ago, we didn't do the disposable camera deal, but my brother in law (not a photographer) did take a bunch of spur of the moment pictures at the reception, and put them into an album that I enjoyed more than the official album through the years. Lots of pics of my friends, and relatives dancing and having fun, instead of just "the members of the wedding" party.

I regret not getting the videographer. The day goes by in a flash and it’s impossible to take it all in.

Spend the money on the photographer. Get a taco truck to save a few bucks. Plated or buffet is $$$$

My sister got married in April 10 years ago and hired a professional photographer. The pictures were lousy. So I went around and got ahold of everyone I knew and asked them to send me pictures if they took any. I got a lot of pics back and had them touched up and sized, printed and gave them to her for Christmas. Best Christmas present ever.

Before cell phones with cameras I was at a wedding where there was a professional photographer. The couple still had a few disposable cameras on each of the tables and asked people to take pictures too. Turned out great for them as the professional could not make it around the room and get as many pics as came back on the disposables. Just a thought.

My wedding photos haven't seen the light of day in a decade. Total waste of money, but then again the entire wedding industry is a waste of money. LOL As you will learn, what she wants she wants and you'll be a SOB if you try to bring logic into the discussion.

The couch is considered a camp out for married guys. Yea I don’t get putting yourself in debt at the beginning of a relationshit when the number one things couples fight about is money.

We had a mediocre photographer, and regret not getting someone better. We still like the photos, they were okay. Always nice to have an album or two you can glance back at. I convinced my wife to skimp on the flowers and table decor to save some money.

Funny, my wife is a photographer. And I’d say most of her clients (90%) love the work she does and attention to detail. Most people still share her stuff years later, and most come back for newborn photos and family photos years after the wedding.

If you are marrying a woman that thinks photos are worth 3k maybe it’s a sign.

We did an entire wedding for 7k. We figured 1 day wasn’t worth a small fortune we could put money to better use on our home. That’s last’s allot longer than 1 day.

My wedding photographer was a friend and said she was charging half price $1500. We got married on the Sun Diver dive boat out of Long Beach, the owner was a friend so it was free. The reason behind the boat was we could limit the invite list. We had three boats of friends circling, a couple swam over and made the wife and I do shots with them, it turned out great. The next night we had the big reception. The only surprise on that night was the bar bill. We thought it was only beer and wine, guests could buy cocktails. I guess the bartenders didn't get the message. $17,000, our friends like to drink. We did end up with some great photos I haven't looked at since shortly after we were married.

The RDP crew must have been at that wedding. Damn that was a lot of booze.

I’ll start with the disposable cameras at the tables will get you better photos, we did both.

I’ll add that we hit 20 years in a few months and I don’t think we have ever opened the wedding book. Everyone who we would show it to was there and I don’t even know where it is.

But then, there’s this:

BTW, if you think getting into a marriage is expensive, you should see what it costs to get out of one. Bayliner Vs. DCB

No trust issues at all. The women have materialistic and financial issues they need to get over before they get near me.

I try to live my life like a Jedi, no attachments, no possessions (other than the basic necessities like food, car, boat and house in that order). Women, on the other hand, are one episode of Hoarding: Buried Alive after another, with no cure in sight.
