A friend of mine sent me this picture as we had been discussing hydraulic steering for a v-drive. Does anyone know about Dometic SeaStar Pro steering? Needing to update from an old Command set up. 670 hp v bottom lake cruiser.

Its designed for ourboards, work very well in their intended use, and electric power steering is an option if you're getting old.

Just like anything vdrive, it will take some custom fab work to adapt.

There are a few different sizes of helm (internally) so you can tailor how many turns lock to lock vs force required at the wheel.

Outboard church section will have more info, if you're able to cope with the teasing over using a car motor.

Had this set-up on my Lavey Sebring OB... Very nice upgrade, simple and clean.

That photo is from a friends boat. Dustin at Menice Marine did it. The boat owner is on here. Look up Justin Micheal Van Gorder.

I just put one of these on my toon...

When I ordered it, there were different models for different HP engines.

For a rudder on a v-drive?? You'd probably need to run two of the biggest ones.

Thanks for the replies. I can fab brackets etc, but my question is what is strong enough for the application? Cylinder size big enough? Most of the set ups I’ve seen posted in the forums are mega HP turbo Schieadas built to go 100 mph plus. My deal is lucky to go 70mph. Just a lake boat for cruising and skiing.

Just throwing it out there, if you think you can make it work... I have a new Sea Star pro cyl for a 200hp+ Merc outboard, I don't have the model # handy. Never mounted or have oil in it. Just the cyl, I don't have the hoses or helm.

There are many options for hydraulic steering. A balanced cylinder with enough throw for your set-up should be easy to source. The Seastar Pro helm pump is a great choice as well. Here is my set up on my boat that runs just under 90mph.

They work well, Hynautic, Seastar, Capilano,

They aren't like power steering, but they are much better than cable/pulley.

Safe and reliable as long as you make the hoses properly. Very simple systems.

Use all the attaching hardware supplied by Seastar, including the tiller bolt. Do not substitute, the pro system uses a higher quality piece. They are not cheap, but Your life hangs on a 3/8 bolt.
