How did your tree(s) do this year?

Majority the Hass and fuerte never got to big. Picking the rest of them now as the small ones already on the trees. They are still hard but I don't want them to effect the next batch.
My Moms Bacon was done months ago and her neighbor on 1 side as well. Other neighbor they are still rock hard but Huge. 1 on top for comparison.

When we lived in Louisiana back in the early 80s, my wife was pleasantly surprised to see avocados at the local grocery store. At the check out counter a local housewife very politely questioned her about the avocados she was buying. What do you do with these things? She even asked if they could be deep fried. Interesting question. My wife explained, she saw no reason to deep fry them. But, you can deep fry just about anything and a Cajun will eat it.

unreal what they cost now back before NFTA cost about 10 cents a piece Run all US growers in the ground and raise prices on the imported. Would be interesting to know what Mexican farmers actually get paid

… My avocados look like lemons… Maybe there are lemons🤷🏽‍♀️
My Moms tree has so many lemons its crazy. Coming up is lemonade day where the local kids all run stands for a competition. Last year I loaded the contestants up with hundreds of lemons so they didn't have to buy them. I have been giving away all the avocados. I should probably give some to the kids to hand out for the customers that tip $$.

Brought out 50 each river trip for my Neighbors. Going to bring out 150 next weekend.

My parents moved in 2000 and the house had a hass avocado tree, that tree had 400-500 the first 2 years and then a few a year for the next 10ish years. We have no clue what happened but it quit producing so they had it removed 🤷

I got a few jars of tuna and blue fin steaks I need to eat. New neighbor brought over like 50 lbs of Bluefin for me and the Guys.

Probably not worth the cost of shipping. But if you were local I would hook you up.

Got to get a bag over to @boatnam2 .

Our huge fuerte tree had an off year… maybe got 5-10 avocados from it. Usually good for 400-500 a year.
Are the small branches getting the black fungi looking stuff on them?

This Fuerte at a customer's is getting it. It still has around a thousand avocados on it and has been heavily picked this year.
One of my trees at old house got it bad last year and produced nothing. Few years ago my Mom had 1 get it and almost died.

I used a copper plant spray on them and cut off most the branches with it. And they are doing good this year.

The trees are finicky. You trim them they don't produce much if anything the next season.

Ours don't do shit. I had 11 trees, and didn't get 11 avocados from the batch. LOL Down to like six trees now. Total production is about six avocados a year. Soil here isn't great, temps are probably too cool as well.

The ones we do get are great, but the local racoon population normally pulls em down takes one bite and leaves them to rot on the ground. Pretty frustrating.

I have 3 trees on a house lot we just bought & you can see the avacado groves from there, so we obviously have the right conditions (San Diego), but the avacados are terrible. The trees are well established but no water to them, yet they look good. Probably needs some fertilizer & sprinklers on them. Not sure if it's worth the effort though. Any thoughts?

The one tree produced around 6 avocados the first year I bought the house few years ago. Same with the other fruit trees. One of my Guys started watering them I think every 3 days. I bought this as well. That tree had around 500 avocados this round and it looks so healthy now. Has doubled in size.

My avos get brown leaf tips and small branches die back sometimes. They get watered regularly. They seem to like rain water better than city water, that's for sure.

Our lemons, oranges and blackberries all do really well. My wife grows a fuck ton of flowers too. The pomegranates are usually small but tasty. The Grapefruits never have produced. Kumquats are occasionally productive but rarely plentiful. The lemon trees are prolific. More fruit than leaves sometimes. the Mexican lime is just sad. It gets smaller annually. Strawberries did ok. We had a couple grape vines growing but the bunches would get moldy, and I over-trimmed em one year and killed them. LOL Roses do great.

No fungi on mine, but yes on the no fruit if you trim it. Had my tree guy a few years ago top it off and got nothing the next year. This year I believe is just a random off year... haven't researched it at all but heard every 5-7 years they just skip a year on fruiting?

I have planted 2 new tress that are now a few years old... fuerte takes forever to grow.

I requested to join the so cal avocado group on FB last night. See if I can learn more about it.

Few years ago went to a wedding at a avocado orchard. Those trees were in perfect condition.

They also had lemons. So many they were dropping all over . Owner mentioned the market rate per lb was to low to even bother picking them. He said take all you want. But don't touch my avocados.

I have heard that an avocado tree grown from just a pit will not produce a good avocados? They must be grafted. I had 8 avocado trees at our house in Redlands. 6 Haas and 2 Fuerte. They all produced very well. Avocado trees need LOTS of water! I also used the feed that @NicPaus posted above.

The Hass and fuerte are grafted onto Bacon.

The one at my Moms that almost died is now 3 large branches from the stump. 2 Bacon 1 Hass. The Bacon re grew when the Hass was almost dead. I sprayed the Hass with that copper plant spray and it bounced back. Now 1 tree produces 2 types.

The big fuerte my customer has is grafted.

The others I have are not. But seem more susceptible to the black fungi on branches. I have numerous small trees but no where to plant. All started from pits. Most are in rough shape currently. But it's probably due to inconsistent watering.

This was a good documentary a few years ago and pretty much explains the downfall of growers in SoCal. Highly reccomended watch, specifically the one on avocados.

hate avocados, guac is like the shit stuck under the mower when you mow the grass wet.fk that

It can be the worst shit on the planet or the best. Few foods vary so wildly.

Something from a plastic tub at a store only shares a partial color with the real thing made fresh and well.

Fresh prepped guacamole is like in-out fries in that it has to be eaten INSTANTLY and fully as its half life is just a little longer than hydrogen-5.

Thats 100X all I ever saw from my tree in LA.
Most years I wouldn't get a single avocado before the squirrels.

My favorite is just slice one in half, fill the pit hole half full of italian dressing and go at it with a spoon til it's gone.....then have the other half, then another one and ...

They will tear them open for the pit. But this year a new hawk and owl. And I saw 1 squirrel and it lasted a few days. Few years ago my neighbor was trapping 1 a day and couldn't keep them at bay. My dog does a good job but they jump tree to tree.

My almond trees are more appealing to the critters and help deter from the avocados.

Going to tear outva few orange trees and replace with avocados. Nobody eats those oranges as I have a few better ones. Everyone I offer avocados to gladly accepts. And my Guys take 10 a week each on there allowance.

When I was a kid delivering news papers on my PK Ripper bike

Neighbors would sell them 5 for a buck …
Growing up in San Diego County we always had avocado trees around. I don't think we ever paid for avocados.

My aunt & uncle owned a bar in OB they would come up to Escondido on random Saturday / Sunday’s go for dinner and drive around in the country looking for a flat or 2 of limes or eggs this was 30 + years ago

We always had a great time, They were Really fun people !

We have 1 tree, currently have the biggest crop ever. 100’s. I could not give them away fast enough. Everyone got a bag that comes to the house.
I think my dogs gain 10#’s with each crop. Not sure of the name but they have a smooth skin and taste way better than haas.

A baby bear was up the tree the other night knocking them to the ground.

One of my Guys just showed up with a sachel full. I counted 80. Grabbed a 5 Gallon bucket full. From a house he just finished up and it's listed for sale. They look like Reed. He said he has got double this many over the last month working there. He Grabbed 6 off my tree the other day so it was a good trade.

Memorial I brought out 120 of them. That big bacon made a big portion of guacamole batch. The neighbor has since gave a bunch to my Brother. I looked yesterday and about a 100 left of those big ones on the tree.

Job site I am at now probably still 6-800 on the tree.
