I know it is a long shot someone will answer before I get on the road. Just as the title says. 2 routes 5 min apart timewise. 1st is I40 to AZ 377 into Phoenix or the 40 to the 17? On one hand I like the freeways better, but so far on this trip we have hit a ton of construction zones and a lot of bad drivers. The other route on the 377 to the 260. Is it a good route? Is it tight winding mountain roads? Is it 2 lanes each way? A little hard to tell on maps. While traveling down the I25 south from Fort Collins to Albuquerque sucked. Windy as hell and then a storm. Hope I don't have to repeat that.

40 to 17 is faster/ easier, they had it wide open for the holiday weekend- there will be some construction on I17 but no closures that I’m aware of.

377-260 is all 2-lane, and more scenic- not necessarily mountain roads but more high desert with a chance of being stuck behind slow traffic. Not usually a bad drive either.

You’ll probably add more than an hour on going through Payson

What side of Phoenix are you going? If it is on the east side, driving through Payson will be quicker. If it is the west side I17 gets the nod.

If you have time stopping at Sunrise ski resort in Greer is pretty cool in summer. Base elevation at 9,200 feet and the scenic ride on the chair lift brings you up to 11,000. Bitchin little restaurant up at the top of the mountain that serves the best fry bread I’ve had. Beers have a little more fuel in them too at that elevation.

Heber/Payson route drops you into Fountain Hills.
It's also 50 miles shorter, but as others stated It's 2 lane so...
I usually go that route...pretty drive.
Favorite route south to Socorro then across 60 thru Springerville,Show Low and into Salt River canyon...then into Globe/Miami.
Really scenic route.Always stop at the bottom of Salt River canyon walk down to the river.

I think the east side. We took the 40/17. Was a pretty good ride. Coming down the 17 the wind kicked up a little, but not bad. We are staying at the Hilton Phoenix resort. This place need a renovation. They are renovating half now.

Rant on.

Driving sucks anymore. You have to be defensive drive at all times. Twice yesterday I had to switch lanes because of people changing lanes when I am in it. One was a semi on the 40 leaving Albuquerque and there was a 3rd lane. The other was an F-150 on the 101. Luckily on both times I had just checked my mirrors and was able to move into the next lane. Then coming down the 17 trying to do the speed limit in a CONSTRUCTION zone the semi's were riding my ass. All the years driving when we full timed I never and a problem with a truck until this trip.

40 to 17 is the best route. 40 to a highway would be longer but scenic.
