Anyone done it?

I've been getting into Video editing a bit and need a new computer, been looking at Mac just for comparison. I would still need to use it for email and basic MS office items (and internet of course)

Anyone done it? Not worth it?

Tempted to stay with PC, just because hard drive space and memory seems to be less expensive...just don't know.

Any advise here?

I have a macbook pro, 2.2 4 gig ram, it had a 160 gig in it, swapped that out for a 500 gig( had that done)...i also have 4 pc's. the mac deal is new to me and can be soooo nice to use, simple....other times to simple and i find myself over thinking things. I like them for their photo programs...I bought it to see what all the fuss was about and they are fun, another reason( sorry djunkie) is that we have 5 ipods, 2 touches and a iphone, oh and apple tv and it all works so nicely together. :thumbsup

I've been messing around with a mac pro lately. It's half the system of my PC (quad core 2.4 ghz per core, 8 gigs ram, 1 gig RAM video card, just added raptor drive for hosting video editing....not working too well).

Macs flat out smoke pc's. There isn't any counter argument to this. I've built hundreds of PC's, tons of overclocked gaming and editing systems. Ain't no water cooled, quad SLi, truck load of ram PC going to touch a mac any day of the week. Argue till yur blue in the balls...it will do no good.

blah blah blah blah blah.....

don't worry about the data migration just get the hell away from microsoft and the pc nation. You'll never look back I promise. If I were you I would get an external drive larger than your current drive...copy and paste brother.

And BTW, there is no right click on the mouse. it's ctrl key and mouse click instead. Don't worry, you'll be fine with one button.

And remember, OCM drives a jeep.

Wait...I drive a jeep too...

Great responses from everyone, thanks. I'll look a lot more at the Mac, the price point I'm at is the same for both. I was a little concerned about price for storage, but that doesn't seem to be an issue I guess.

Thanks again, I'll keep shopping.

Actually there is...learned it yesterday at the Apple Store. go to system preference, keyboard/mouse, select mouse and make the right side of the mouse secondary.

I switched, there are videos on apple.com to help you with the transition. They have MS office for Mac. I didn't miss a beat, and my computer doesn't crash any more.

I guess I assumed that it would run Outlook because you can get MS office for Mac. Am I wrong? Does Outlook not run on the Mac?

The Mac version of Outlook is called Entourage.

With the new release of Snow Leopard, Apple Mail will work on exchange servers. I used Outlook for all my stuff, but now prefer Apple Mail.

I've been on Macs for years. I will never go back to a PC. Macs just work, and are easy to use.

My girl has an IT degree. Works in IT/operations. Hates Macs. She has two PC laptops and is always mucking around with them...something is always wrong with one or both of them.

People with IT degrees need something to work on. Another reason to stay away from trouble free platforms. :thumbsdown:skull:D:D

It's call job security. IT people wouldn't have incomes and become just I's because there's no technology....just information if the world was mac.

I used to argue for PC's all the time because I felt as though the price point of a mac was ridiculous...especially after they started using Intel processors you could really compare apples to....ummm....

Still to this day you can get all the hardware that's in a mac for 1/2-1/3 of the cost. But when you get one built from mac you won't get a computer to run like a mac. Something microsoft doesn't get but does an excellent job bullshitting against.

Meant as a Joke. :):) I am con...puter stupid.

The one thing I know is a PC will suck a virus many times over it's lifespan. Something MAC owners don't have to live with.

Can you use a crossover cat 5 cable to transfer data from a PC hard drive to a Mac? I’ve done this PC to PC. I also have a external HD. My issue with the switch is the initial cost and software upgrades. I will need CS4~5, Corel and office to start.

Macs flat out smoke pc's. There isn't any counter argument to this.

I was going to suggest it's pretty much the identical hardware and even the OS underpinnings are practically identical to Linux and not that far from Windows (Microsoft built Windows NT on the Carnegie Mellon MACH micro kernel [unix variant] back in the days of Dave Cutler...)

... but I suppose that wouldn't be any argument. :D

The stuff that I do is practically identical on UNIX, Linux, and Mac with Windows being pretty similar. It comes down to the user interface and usability. Mac doesn't always win there.

Mac is good but thru-hull exhaust does more to enhance performance than the Mac OS.

Translation: Macs are the best in the same way that Howard unarguably makes the best boats in the world. Howard makes a seriously good boat but let's not get too crazy.

I cant wait until someone decides Macs are finally viable enough to write up a virus for Mac's...

They cant get virus' is totatal crap. They are not popular enough for anyone to write viruses for is more accurate. That will change, and alot of people will get butthurt over it:skull

I don't think anyone is saying the can't get viruses.

And there are a lot of Macs out there, 10%+ of total market share and - surprisingly - 90% of market share for computers costing over $1,000.

Bingo, now that they are getting more popular there have been reports of viruses and attackes circulating. Many are now finally recommending the use of anti-virus software on them.

Most of the idiot mac fanboys say stuff like this all the time, i know, i have a few buddies that fall into this category, they say stupid shit like "They just work" or "You can't get viruses on them" they'd eat shit Popsicles, and tell you how delicious they are if they had an apple logo on them....

Not dogging macs they are great computers, actually i take that back, they have a great operating system, but they are grossly over-priced. I don't understand why anyone would pay $2500 for a computer that has components that add up to only around $800. and I just don't understand the die hard cult following.... it's ridiculous :p

Save the money, have a mac clone built ;)

I've been working with PC's for many years...solid business environment machines. They do have their "issues", of course, but minor stuff, for the most part. I've tried Apple platform products several times...just don't get it...:grumble:

I've got a new G4 desktop sitting on my desk and can't make it do $h!t. It's pretty and all, but still go back to the PC for my video stuff (confort zone, I guess).

Just got in a Dell 64-bit w/Win 7...it's doing nicely for what I need.

They haven't made the G4 in almost 7 years
