We've enjoyed The Beach House restaurant and bar in Poipu. Great sunset dinners.

In Kapaa, I would try Sams Oceanview

Thanks for the information. One of the guys in my van-pool mentioned the sunset dinner at The Beach House

You bet. Hope you have a great time.

We stayed at Kuhio Shores next door.

Sunsets are amazing there.

Dunno if it's still there but the Bali Hai in Princeville was our favorite for breakfasts.
Near the golf course on a hill.

Never mind it's closed.

You will love it.
A little wetter than the other islands = lots of rainbows.

Tunnels Beach up north has good snorkeling

Been to Kauai many times.

Beach house is nice if you are looking for something more fancy. We did it once and it was too formal for us.

Brenneckes Beach Broiler is nice in Poipu and more casual. We also hit the Hyatt for drinks and Pupu platters in the main area over looking the ocean and grounds.

There are also some newer places in the new shopping area by the round-a-bout leaving Poipu heading to the Beach house.

We get a condo beachside in Poipu so we grill fresh fish a lot. We get it at Old town Koloa fish market about 5 minutes from Poipu. They have walk in fresh lunch plates too if you happen to be in the area. There is a Star Market grocery store there too. They have fresh fish and killer fried chicken.

There is also a killer place up by the Kilauea called the Kilauea Fish Market. if you are heading around the island up towards Princeville be sure to hit this place up. It on the way to the lighthouse but not far off the main road if you are not going to the light house.

Have fun.

First stop should be Costco in Lihue; will save you a ton of money.

On Kauai, North Shore is where it's at, the wet side. Poipu os the dry side and whil nice, kinda bland now that they removed all the cane fields.

Kilauea Fish Market on the road to the lighthouse in Kiluea. More of a lunch/takeout, not a sit down place. Looks somewhat unimpressive, but it is a local favorite, and excellent https://www.yelp.com/biz/kilauea-fish-market-kilauea

Ono Burger on Kuhio (the main highway) on your way to the North Shore. It's a small shack, on the right-hand sid eof the road https://www.yelp.com/biz/duanes-ono-char-burger-anahola .

Banana Joe's for smoothies, also on Kuhio, left side of the road, just outside Kilauea, also on the way to the North Shore. https://www.yelp.com/biz/banana-joes-kilauea

Kalypso in Hanalei for a nice sit down dinner. If you time it right, grab an early dinner there and then on to the sunset at Ke'Ee beach aka the "end of the road" beach. Or vice versa, KeEe is the place to be for sunset, your lady will love you for it. https://www.yelp.com/biz/kalypso-island-bar-and-grill-hanalei . KeEe is a great beach during the day too, the Euros like it

Second best beach is at Haena, where you get to Cannons or Tunnels beach (across the street from the wet caves).

Also, Chun Ming village is in the heart of Hanalei, which is a stones throw away from Princeville. There, you can get out and walk around with tons of shops and local eats; the locals are friendly and accommodating, which is hard to find on Kauai.

Our family has a vacation house in Wainiha, just up the road from the Wainiha Market :thumbsup

Looks like we will get some rain when we are there next week. Hopefully it clears out so we can enjoy the pool and the beaches.

That is Cannons, just past that rock pile and you can have a beach to yourself.

It rains on the North Shore nearly everyday; but usually goes away quickly. In fact, the mountain that overlooks the North Shore is the wettest place on planet earth. Enjoy the rain, it's warm and bitchen :thumbsup

Thanks for the information. I was not aware that Beach House is more formal. We are not taking any formal type clothing with us. I had heard about Brenneckes Beach Broiler from the same person on my van-pool and we may try that since is more casual.

Anuenue Cafe in Poipu shopping Village, try the Kalua pork fried rice.

Huki Lau, Dinner res. required - Wailua
Puka Dog, Lunch - Poipu
Plantation Gardens, Dinner res. required - Poipu

FYI - These are suggestions from my BIL and sister who lived full time in Princeville for 5 years. Just sold and moved last year. They have a good knowledge of the entire island. Plenty of good places around Princeville on the north shore. But, I told them you were staying on the south shore.

We hit costco the last time we went. You get off the plane and are ready for a vacation in tropical paradise.

LOL Then you walk into Costco and its the biggest vacation-mood buzz kill. its the same ole shit and you feel like you were transported back home. Unless you have a condo and a lot of people its not worth it and a waste of time IMO. $7,000 vacation, Im not waiting in line at costco to save $4 on rum. :)

That said, They do sell softside surf boards and boogie board for cheaper than you can rent one for the week. I saw some families buying them and just leaving them behind after their trip

We had a pretty nice lunch at Dukes in Lihue also.
We hung out there prior to going back to the Airport which is pretty close by.

Cannot wait to see it

Poipu Beach is awesome!

We only need water for the hotel room and most likely will just hit the local market.

There is a pretty big K-mart in Lihue if you want to beat the Costco crowd.

We like shopping the local markets when we are in town more expensive but everything in Hawaii is. Did the Costco trip once when we were there for two weeks in Hanalei with the family.

Enjoy, it is a beautiful island.

Stop in at the market in Princeville, take a gander at their prices :eek

Just be sure you are wearing mosquito repellent at all times while on the wet side.

My daughter and I would surf all day in front of the beach house and then dinner. Lots of surfing out front!

Make sure you take good care of the place...we'll be over there May 1st to the 9th! It's been quite a few years since I've been to Kauai and we're looking forward to getting back there.

This is our first time to Kauai and we are looking forward to putting this island on the completed bucket list.

My wife and I just got back last week. Our favorite places to eat were the small hole in the wall places. We did eat at the top places also like tidepools, beach house, etc but I wasn't impressed. Marks place, Koloa fish market, and makai sushi were my favorites. The helicopter tour with doors off was very cool. watch out for the chickens, I got pecked on my foot while I was eating lunch. It didn't hurt but I jumped up pretty quick.

Looks like we will get some rain when we are there next week. Hopefully it clears out so we can enjoy the pool and the beaches.

Just a quick FYI - You can pretty much ignore the online weather forecasts for Hawaii, especially the extended. Unless there is a major front coming, there are just too many microclimates, and too many variables to predict.

The only one worth a damn is here, and it's only good for a couple of days out - http://www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/kauai.php
(we've had guests almost cancel a trip to our rental condo on Maui, due to "rain every day" forecast, only to tell me it ended up being sunny every day)

The best game plan for Kauai, especially where you are staying: If the (local) forecast says sunny night before, and you wake up and it's sunny, head north to Princeville, Hanalei & Tunnels Beach etc.
If it's cloudy, head South to Poipu, Waimea Canyon or Polihale Beach on the West Side.
(Also, on calmer days the clouds tend to build up on the mountains due to convection heating. So mornings can be sunny on the northern beaches and then cloud up later in the day--but no guarantees-- hawaii weathers like a box of chocolates)

But there's a HUGE difference in the weather between the North and South side, especially now that we are getting past the rainy season.

Enjoy!

Did not enjoy the south side of the island (grand Canyon ) kind of like desert scenery. Went all the wat north across the one way bridge and hung out at a bar called kokopellis or something like that. Really enjoyed it laid back. Did the kyiack and zip line tour good time but we like self exploring better...sex on the beach was great. ...lol have a great time

The grand Canyon is definitely on our to-do list. We are thinking about the boat tour on the Napoli coast line.
