I won a Bring a Trailer auction for a 911 Porsche (996 variant) last week. I picked it up earlier today. Pretty jazzed.

Runs like a champ. Truly amazing condition for its age. 6 speed manual with brand new coil overs. Many many thousands of dollars in maintenance receipts with North of $5k in the last 12 months. IMS bearing upgrade, new cluch, water pump, drive belt, etc. etc.

The auction closed mid day Wednesday and I was surprised to get it for what I paid.

What did it go for, if I can ask? Loosely watching the 911 market for a 997 S or better, but over-revs and bore scoring would have me nervous without a PPI.

It’s funny to watch the asking prices of cars and they don’t sell…I think BAT hits a true market value, assuming it’s not something special that drives the prices crazy.

$25,750. At first it’s kind of a crap shoot but, now that I have the car, it really seems like I got a lot for the money.

I hear you on the bore issue but, not sure if it’s a thing on the 996s and, it’s not a big dollar car so I took the risk.

I touched triple digits in 4th and it barely seemed to be breathing hard. I’m pretty optimistic that it will be fine.

Looks clean. Early model? 2000 or 2001? I had a 2002 GP white on black. Fun car for the money, but they don't get much love.

I found the right 964, a '91 GP white on black. Sold the 996 a few months later. Got into the air-cooled car and they have since doubled in value...

It will be interesting to see the values of 996's in another decade.

Looks like a great car! 996’s are by far the best value and glad you’re already having fun with it. They’re meant to be driven!

It’s an 01. I was thinking the same thing. They get no love and their re sell value reflects this. It’s really a nice car so it’s hard to understand why. Perhaps this will change over the next decade.

Two reasons; The styling (fried egg head lights) and the IMS bearing. As far as the 996 platform goes, Turbos and GT cars are where the values will creep up over time. Standard Carrera, who knows what will happen. The 964 didn't get much love, now they've skyrocketed the last several years. Who knows...
Drive it and enjoy, miles on P cars don't really have too much of an impact on value.

That was the one dealbreaker for me. I had been looking for some months and I wasn‘t interested in any car that hadn’t already had the IMS bearing replaced professionally with receipts.

For those of us non-German or Autobahn types...what's the IMS bearing?

I bought a 2002 996 on Ebay years ago. I commuted with it daily for a few years, only problem I had was a leaky coolant res. Did the ROW sport suspension update and made the exhaust bypass mod so it sounded great. Best of luck with it, it will be a great car.

Intermediate shaft bearing. If it fails, the cams go out of sequence vs. pistons.
About 1% failure in some model years, up to 10% in others. The repair is fairly simple, and costs around 3k with the upgraded bearing and labor, which requires RnR of the transaxle.
I previously owned a 1999 996.1, what a great car. Sold it on Bring a Trailer, the current owner still texts me photos 30k miles later.
Currently own a 997.1 Carrera S. This one has the potential bore scoring issues, but the reality is much like the IMS issue, just drive it, the problems are pretty rare.

Intermediate Shaft bearing....they were originally built with a ball bearing, which when it goes, goes in a rather catastrophic manner.

There are aftermarket upgrades to a pressure fed plain bearing which lives as long as the rest of the plain bearings in the engine.

Nice ride! I have a 99 Carrera 4. Really fun to drive… Ive had mine for about four years now and it never gets boring. As for the IMS, this is not a big deal if addressed. Mine was done when I bought it but I went ahead and put a better kit in when I rebuilt my transmission. I would see if you can find out what kit was used. IMO the best way to address this is with the

kit and the oil lube kit as well. Here is the video about the lube kit…pretty slick (no pun). If you decide to upgrade in the future PM me and I’ll send you the special tools to lock the cam in place…pretty sure I have a few of those rubber cam end plugs laying around too.

Cool video. Thanks.

seller stated the mechanic used
“ Japan High Performance Ceramic Race Bearing for his IMS repairs.”

in looking at It further, I ended up reading this on it:

The fried egg headlights can be remedied for cheap, I think there are upgrade kits out there so you don't have piece it together from Porsche. IMO, the 996 is one of the most overlooked bargain sports cars out there. The non-wrench turners out there always balk at the IMS bearing, but if you have any mechanical abilities all, it's an ez weekend job....and a great way to really get to know your car. Congrats, nice score.

Curious what year it is? How many miles? Looks way cleaner than mine. Upgraded gages? I gotta say I had a lot of fun driving during Covid…had the opportunity to stretch her legs over 100mph for just over ten miles on the 101. Last of the true analog 911’s…so much fun!

IMO, don’t remedy the fried egg headlights. Because it will look like you tried to remedy them. Just accept em.

Congratulations on your purchase. I've been a Porsche guy for 50 years!! Love these cars. Now you need to join Rennlist. It's a Porsche website that is very friendly.

Yeah, I'm not talking about the cheap adapter plate thing you buy to convert to a round headlight. I'm talking about the carbon (or fiberglass if you're on a budget) nose piece conversion. I'll see if I can find a pic of the last one I helped on. We did the nose, rotors, calipers, wheels, small aero trim pieces at the rear and waist, (I think they were all from Florence Carbon) Nothing gaudy or overstated, just some cool custom trim that updated a relatively cheap sports car.
