Did you get buried and then put the slides out and called it camp for the night?

Biggest word of advice after camping at the dunes with motorhomes for the last 12 years is to carry momentum and not lift off the gas. You’ll be surprised how far you can go. As soon as you lift in some soft stuff… you’re done lol

Tag axle pushers in the sand are just like a bike with training wheels. Good learning experience though LOL

Ok, so here’s what happened:

We left Phoenix on Friday late afternoon and spent the night in Boulder City in the Hoover Dam Lodge parking lot. I was tired and didn’t want to keep going so we got some sleep and then headed up to Sand Hollow, Zion and Bryce Canyon on Saturday where we stayed the night just outside Bryce at a nice RV park. Sunday morning we headed straight to Lone Rock Beach on Powell and that’s where this learning experience went down.

I’m not an idiot and realize a 35,000lb RV isn’t going to move through soft material so as I approached the beach I stayed on the well formed road made of mostly small rock and sand. I then proceeded East down the beach passing dozens of rigs already setup on the hard packed material along the high water shore line. Arriving at the end of the row, I found a nice spot and set up shop.

After the shop was set up, the hydraulic jacks down and the slides out, I realized the exterior door, awnings and exterior TV were facing away from the beach and thought it would be better to have them on the beach side for camp reasons.

With the wife tending to the 3 small boys, I decided to pull up camp and do a J turn to position myself back where I had been, only facing West this time. The mistake I made was not getting out to double check that directly behind me was not all rock, but a soft sandy spot, which I promptly found reversing out. After I started spinning in reverse, I put her in Go and gave her some boost. We got rolling forward at about 6-8MPH for about 50 feet or so and as I was just starting to turn back to civilization, she sank to the axles and that’s all she wrote.

Had a guy with a big 3500 dually who just finished pulling out a 35’ Gas Class A give it a try and he was only able to pull me backwards about 10” and then he started digging to china. Had he had a winch or a Kinetic rope, things might have been different, but alas, that wasn’t our fate.

I set up shop again and thought about what a mistake that was. Called two off-road recovery firms in Utah, one being Matt and the other being someone who’s also famous hut I won’t name. The unnamed wanted a $1,500 deposit but said it would most likely be $2,000+ while Matt wanted a $500 deposit and would return $300 after the job was done to ensure they got their footage for YouTube. I told this to the other guy and all he did was bad mouth Matt and his operation so I thanked him and Matt’s son Collin said he’d be out in the morning.

They came out about 10:30AM and got me out by 11:30 all while filming and strategizing for about half that time.

Turns out some harbor freight Badland 12,000lb winches, some snatch blocks, yank em rope and a pintle hitch are all you need. Of course, 2 heavy duty trucks for anchors and one on 54s and some ungodly low range gearing help as well.

My son and I got some T shirts and Colin returned the $300 by end of the night. The 3 guys were nice and cordial and did a great job with no damage.

Big thanks to Matt’s Off-road Recovery!

Good on you for taking it in stride and making the most of it...I wish I was calmer and more like you in an instance like this. Kudos!

How far off the actual shoreline are most people camping now? We used to drag trailers and truck campers down to the shoreline but that was many years ago and things have changed.

I miss Lone Rock for sure!

Thanks!

Damn, that sounds cheap at several times the price. $2k would even seem in line with that kind of deal. Glad you found Matt and got the better experience/rate. Don't forget to post the link when the time comes.

Matt can monotize the recovery on YouTube and make more than the recovery fee on the video. I could see how someone not on the same program would take exception. LOL.

I will now patiently await the OPs YouTube turn as someone who made the call... 🤣

We'll get em out! Watch Matt's shows all the time, seems like a pretty nice guy and he's doing pretty well on his YouTube deal I'm guessing. I like the shop/build videos he posts as well, looks like he's enjoying life with a cool business he has developed.

He said the other person he called was famous as well, I am guessing Dave or Rory....both of them can monetize on Youtube as well....but I thought they were all pretty cool with each other...

I watch all his shows also, seems to be a genuine guy and pretty entertaining. The 6x6 Spud truck with the supercharged LS should be a great addition. Crazy they only charged a couple hundred bucks when Lone Rock is a couple hours from their shop in Hurricane. Seems they blew that in fuel alone

I thought Matt gave a speech that pulling from a trailer hitch was a big No-No?

Or is a pintel hitch okay?

Either way I'm glad he got you unstuck!

I've wondered that as well, there was a guy that was killed when the hitch from a truck who was trying to tow him out snapped and a portion of the receiver hitch went through the windshield and struck the guy. Maybe a pintle hitch is ok cause he uses a kinetic tow rope instead of a static?

That's what I meant, the trailer hitch ball went through the windshield and killed the guy in front of his family from what I remember of the situation. Sad deal

when I’m winching someone out in my jeep, I try to position myself behind the windshield A pillar - JIC !
thats better than nothing,

Rope is better than cable in my opinion. Cable stores more energy !

Trailer ball! Drop hitch are usually bad.
The kinetic ropes are easier on all involved.

I don't think those guys have the following that MOR has, probably a big difference in revenue from the videos. But I only have passing awareness of what kind of money these content creators stand to earn.

I also imagine these guys all fall in and out of love with each other, or could be someone was having a bad day.

Same here, I had synthetic rope on my winch. Also bought a nice Factor 5 kinetic rope and soft shackles last Easter Jeep Safari we went to. Never had to use either but good to have

They drove quite a ways to get to you too. Hurricane to Lone Rock is a pretty good haul. I’ve heard some of these guys don’t charge or charge very little. My guess is they charged you the $200 just due to the distance to get to you. Good stuff. I’ll keep an eye out for the episode.

a 5/8 hitch pin has a shear strength of at least 35K lbs....and it's in double shear (sort of) so assume the pin will be mostly fine. The issues come up with drop hitches where a bending force is applied to them....that's where the failures occur.

I dont' think its Fab Rats or Rory. Matt is still good friends with those guys. I've noticed that Casey who used to be a good friend of Matt's in the early days of MORR is never seen or mentioned on the show anymore. My guess would be Casey but who knows, it could be a no name outfit also.

The Badland winches work pretty good, I've only had issues when in a hurry and didn't have enough tension spooling back. The axles under the tow truck look like AxleTech 4000's. 10t badassery, and I think a 6.8:1 or so gear ratio just at the axle, let alone the T-case.

Some people are freaked out about the hitch mount. We used 30k pintle hooks as grab points for our mud trucks. They were probably only 8-10,000lbs, but buried past the axles on 48"+ tires. Some of the bigger trucks I've seen in jobs had pintles rated for 60k, with 12k tongue ratings.

I bought this after that hitch breaking accident.
And this stays in my father in laws Pheaton just in case.
https://freedomropes.com/our-produc...x-20-Kinetic-Energy-Recovery-Rope/p/625203767

Our friends tag axle can lift up, but if i recall correctly it automatically puts pressure down after a certain mph. Not sure if he ever had it bypassed or not. Most of the time they carry carpet or wood with them just in case.
