We are in need luggage for an upcoming trip. I am not a fan of the hard case ones. But could do it if needed. What are some that don’t break the bank?

Hit up stores like Ross or even Nordstrom Rack. They have decent name brand luggage, hard and soft-sided, for good prices.

Personally, I try and avoid packing suitcases and I prefer to travel using backpacks. They fit in the overhead bins and don't get manhandled like people's suitcases typically do. Case in point. We just got back from a trip to the Caribbean and my wife packed three suitcases for her and the kids. I packed my North Face backpack and a smaller Patagonia pack, and traveled light. On our way home, we got stuck with a weather delay in Houston. Her three suitcases sat out on the tarmac, in the rain, prior to being loaded on the plane. Everything she had packed for herself and the kids ended up soaking wet. My belongings were safe and dry in the overhead storage bin and on the floor by my feet. She wasn't happy when we returned home and realized the mess.

I'd rather have my personal belongings close to me and on my back which also makes life SO much easier when zipping around the airports. I've been doing this for years and this is how I prefer to travel.

Ian….If you can’t spring for the set of two let me know I’d be happy to break up my pair for a fair price. 🤣 BTW, this is RDP you shouldn’t be asking about money savings. Just like there are no losers in the Stock Market thread.😆

I hope that you are going to have some time to go take in the Sights with the whole family. East Coast has so much history. Enjoy!!!

With the bag fees now, it might be less expensive to UPS your shit there and back that won't fit in your carry-on, and you won't have to by luggage (and store it for eternity when you get home)

True but we got upgraded so no fees and first class. Spending money has its advantages lol

I travel once a month or more and my wife does too. We are both due for smaller ones anyways. Traveling with the 6 year old is insane. He wants to bring his whole bedroom lol

X2 for Ogio. I have bags that are 20 years old from them with 100’s of thousands of air miles. Legit.

We go for the strongest wheels & wheel assembly..
These past few flights to Europe and around the USA airlines are really strict about carry-on size.

AWAY luggage has held up the best. We buy it on sale.

I travel 2-3 times a week. I switched to the Ogio’s a few years ago and they’ve been awesome.

The one challenge you’ll find is that women shop by looks and men shop by function. The Ogio’s aren’t always the most pleasing to the eye but they work and hold up.

The hard sides have their place…

If you check a bag, rather than carry-on, and as you’re boarding and there’s a lightning strike within a few miles the tarmac/baggage crew are required to seek shelter immediately until there is no lightning strikes for something like 40 minutes of time has passed since the last strike. That means your bag, if not loaded on the plane already, is getting drenched by the aftermath. The hard sides do a little better of not soaking your shit.

The shit you learn as a frequent flyer lol…

Whenever we need a new suitcase we hit up Target or such and buy whatever Samsonite is on sale. My family doesn't travel enough to invest in high end or more durable luggage, and it is going to get beat to hell down on the ramp or being loaded on/off the airplane. The luggage tends to last for years, which always surprised me, but then it gets used only a couple of times a year really. No need for anything more.

I have traveled the world over a few times. The only luggage that has passed the test and still with me 20 years later.

Along these lines, I think I’ve had an older version of this for 10-15 years with no issues. Been all over the world when I have extended trips.

Ross, Hobby Lobby, TJ Max, even Wallyworld. Lol, find a color easily recognized at baggage claim that is not black or blue.

I'm the first guy at the airport baggage carousel and I stand by the delivery dump chute.
No security checking of luggage at LAX (nor Burbank).

Watching the Fet/tranq camps cleanups on Venice beach and around LAX on YouTube a common item amongst the camps are stolen luggage from LAX.
Important to us to have easy to spot and grab luggage.

TravelPro-
Ever wonder what airline crews use.
I have my first TravelPro from '99 that I could still use if needed. All zippers work, interior liner and pockets are undamaged. Handle still moves easy up/down. Could use a new set of wheels.
I prefer the Crew or Elite Series.
I do not like the spinner cases. Prefer two wheels so I can sling tote bags on the bag hooks and backpack on the handles. The two wheel case is easier to move quickly in busy airports too.

I have a FlightCrew5 Series 21" suiter and a smaller Elite case that is good for weekends and laptops.
Wife has the FlightCrew5 Series 21"
Daughter has the FlightCrew5 20"
Youngest daughter went with the Platinum Elite hardside case in 20". That is by far the best rolling 4 wheels case I have seen.
we have 2 25" checked bags also.

Buy direct from TravelPro or through Amazon--but stay with FlightCrew or Elite.
They have the matching tote, laptop, etc bags
Buy one, buy right and look like you know what your doing in the airport.

I agree with Ross/TJ max thought. We bought an entire set of samsonite once. All different sizes etc. that shit was clapped out and broken after a few trips. Tried to get it warrantied and it was a PITA. Never again. I’ll buy the cheap stuff and rebuy it every few years. The north face duffels are nice though and the zippers are strong.

If you need it to last, just pay up now.

My wife tried to save and has been through a couple of sets over the past decade. Inexpensive ones fall apart. She finally spent a little more and bought a set of Away brand bags. They seem nice, time will tell, sooner than later - we travel a lot.

I've had a Tumi roller bag for 24 years. Probably paid near a grand for it. Solid fucker and its nice, all leather. Although I dont think Tumi is what it once was.

For ski trips, boat trips, or anything adventurous, I have a large Yeti rubber duffle/backpack. Again, tough as shit, that thing will probably outlive me for sure. Worst part is, everyone comments - is that a cooler, as your bag???

Pick an ugly color. There's always so many damn black bags. We have some dark blue bags, but still too damn common. My wife found a place that will make elastic bands with printed messages that wrap around the bag. She bought a few bright yellow ones that say NOT YOURS on it. LOL

They all get beat up.
Your suitcase must not exceed 50lbs, or you get hit with a heavy fee, so too big suitcases are not good in most cases.

I like hard plastic sides, to some what protect what’s inside. Don’t get black…..every suitcase is black. 😉😂
