I lived there for 3 years. Learned quickly not to piss Pele off.

You really want to blow your mind there is a photo somewhere that shows a whole viewing area near this eruption with people standing there watching it. Apparently Kilauea is so tame its like watching animals in a zoo do their thing.

That place is super amazing and makes you realize how man has no say in nature.
Walked through the Thorton tube and explored few unimproved others too. Pitch black in those.
We were blessed with a tubular popup flow when we did the heli tour on my wifes birthday several years ago. Pilot said that it wasn't there on the flight just before ours. The heat coming off it was astounding hot up in the copter, easily felt.
Think I read this eruption is a surface flow, hope no homes will be affected.

Family has owned over there since the 60’s. We just sold our place recently. Was there in 90 when kiluea took out black sands beach and a bunch of towns. One of the most surreal things I’ve ever experienced. We were at the black sands beach a week before. Then it was gone. You could walk right up to the lava flow back then and watch it cross the street, burn houses and cars and shit.

Found some better pics.

Why’s the Road closed?? uh, yeah, 100 yards ahead lava is actually rolling across the street. Unreal.

And a pic of the black sands beach a week before it was wiped out.

Funny thing is it’s only been 35 years and the black sand is already returning.

I gotta say, after it started really erupting in the late 80’s it fucked up the Kona side of the big island. The “Vog” was a real thing and basically made the Kona side cloudy in the afternoon every day. As a kid I witnessed “the green flash” as the sunset drops below the horizon multiple times. Never saw it again after 90.
