As the title says, my truck is a 2016 6.7L Powerstroke with only about 57k miles. Sorry for the long post, just seeing if anyone else has experienced anything like this.

A few weeks ago, my wife pulls up to the launch ramp to retrieve the boat, as she's waiting in line for whatever reason she decided to turn the truck off, when she goes to turn it back on it won't start so she flags me down, I tie the boat up to the dock and walk up. The truck has the autoseat adjustment, so as soon as you put the key in, the seat will move to your set position and when you take the key out, it moves back (I am sure you all know how that works) anyway, I put the key in and notice right away the seat isn't moving, turn the key and nothing happens, stereo comes on, dash lights up, no warning or anything but when you turn the key nothing, doesn't crank or anything. I sit there for about 5 minutes turning key back and forth, then all of sudden it fires up like normal. Get the boat out and go home.

Since then it has started fine, but a few times when I would start it, the windshield wipers would cycle even though they were turned off, once they even got about halfway up and stopped in the middle of the windshield.

This weekend on Saturday I drove it to the carwash then on the way back while coasting on a slight downhill to a red light, the truck just turned off, no sputtering, no warning lights, stereo stayed on, but engine just shut off. Luckily I was going slow, coasted to a stop, put it in park, and it fired right back up. Drove it straight home. Saturday evening I drove it around the neighborhood trying to see if it would shut off again, and it didn't worked just fine.

Sunday morning started up fine, drove to my moms house, visited for about 2 hours, hopped in truck to leave, and it did the same thing it did at the boat launch, turn the key and nothing happens, seat doesnt move, stereo comes on, but engine wont crank. Get my dads voltage meter and both batteries read about 12.65 so I didn't think batteries. Kept turning key hoping to get lucky like I did at the launch, but nothing is happening. For shits and giggles and hook up a jumper box to the passenger side battery, nothing. So then I hook the jumper box to the driver side battery and turn the key and everything fires up like normal. I drive it home and park it. Sunday evening I load tested the batteries and they both test out fine, hooked a scanner up and there are no codes. Drove truck around, turned it off and on a few times and everything is fine.

Going to take it to the dealer, but if there are no codes and I can't get it to replicate the issue, not sure if there is anything they can do.

Has anyone had this happen?

Need to look at a wiring diagram and see what all of the things that don't wake up have in common...then repair the bad switch or connection.

My bud in Texas has a 15 SD 6.7. He's had some issue like you are describing. The dealer blamed it on batteries so he had them replaced. The issue came back after a bit. Then they replaced some wire harness. So far the only new issue is the back up cam keeps going out but hasn't ghosted him like before.

I'd never own one of these out of warranty. Fix it and get rid of it if you dont have a factory extended warranty.

It could be the key cylinder itself. It sounds like the accessory is staying on but the primary is cutting out.

If so its an easy one .

Take a look at the cables... Stock batteries or batteries where they are serviceable and not 100% sealed are common to leak on these things and get into the cable and corrode. This will cause major issues down the line and we have seen it create some big communication issues amongst different modules and the truck shutting down with zero notice. The battery terminal itself will actually get eaten away. The fuel injection module is very picky with voltage also, so if the batteries are old, this could be your issue.

My 2015 did this. Dealer replaced both batteries and never had an issue again. Batteries seemed fine up until I drove it to the dealer but the problem went away after batteries were replaced. Damned if I know 🤷‍♂️

There is a wiring harness under the spare tire mount that can cause the truck to do some funky stuff. I would post up what happened on Ford-trucks forum.

Had this happen with a friends truck, but not a 6.7. His is a Raptor, but same possessed symptoms. Had tried standard stuff, like ignition switch. With a scantool hooked up, could see the signal leave switch, but no joy. It went to the dealer and ended up getting a module (I believe something like the PATS module from the earlier terms) It was something with the anti-theft/keyless entry. Been fine for several months now...
Maybe the same type of deal?

Used the truck to take kid to school today, put key in ignition, seat didn't move, wipers cycled and truck started right up. I have an appointment at the dealer tomorrow, but I am worried because I have a desert trip planned for Halloween, and right now I don't really trust driving the truck very far, let alone pulling a trailer with the family.

Well didn't get the truck back from the dealer to make it to the desert for Halloween....dealer called me today after being there for two weeks to say that they could not get the truck to replicate the problem and it isn't throwing any codes, so I need to go pick it up because there is nothing they can do.

So now I get to drive this truck around not knowing if/when this might happen again...smh

I have a 2017. Had the same exact issues you are describing. They are known to have the batteries corrode and the terminals crack/break. Also, the batteries themselves suck. I replaced the terminals myself and replaced the batteries with Odyssey's and haven't had an issue since.

I looked at the batteries and they looked and tested ok, they are 2019 Diehards, but I’ll give them another go through when I pick the truck up.

Sadly that's how electrical problems are. I had a similar problem on my Honda. Turned out to be the key cylinder itself. Only way I found out was it eventually got so bad that I was able to giggle the keys while the engine was running and it would turn off, jiggle them again and it could gain connection. But when it was first happening only once a month randomly, I couldn't figure it out.

2019 o_O

How were they tested? Some silly pocket handheld size tester?

Yes I tested them with just a generic load tester, but apparently the dealer tested them as well and they tested fine.

I am still on the boat of you need to put a set of batteries in it.

Re-test them, with them completely disconnected from the truck, positive terminal off. A common mistake on diesels, when batteries are tested they are still connected to each other, giving a false positive. Have to pull the terminals off and load test them. I would like to load test them with our Vat 40. I bet you a filet mignon dinner they fail.

I couldn’t tell you what or how the dealer tested them, but when I did it, I completely disconnected them both positive and negative before testing...I guess the next step is to replace batteries and hope for the best...does Autozone any place like that have a fancy VAT40 to test?

Vat 40 is an old-school type of battery tester. Only the OG's in the automotive industry will have one of these. haha. You can do some serious damage with this thing, like let the smoke out things.

Sorry for the saga, but I go to RDP for all my problems because it seems there is always an expert in every subject matter.

So as my post above says, truck would not start, dash came on, radio came on, but nothing when the key was turned...I also noticed that the drivers side power seat didn't work but the passenger one did, and the drivers front window didn't work, but the other three did. Called the dealer, sent them a video and they still said they didn't know what was going on.

I checked the plug behind the parking brake, unhooked it and plugged it back in nice and tight....no change
I hooked the battery up to a charger set on 100amp start (tried both batteries separately)....no change

I pop the fuse box in the engine bay, I actually don't know what I was looking for, but I noticed the box seemed kind of loose and the nut that seems to be a ground wire (not sure if it is) was almost completely backed off. I snugged that up, jump in the truck and BAM it starts right up...not sure if that was issue or it was just a coincidence that it started...but for now my wife thinks I am genius and I am running with that...only time will tell from here.

STILL 2019 batteries...change them
Dec 2019, not even quite a full 2 years old yet…but still on the list to change, just trying to narrow down the issue so I am confident on what it was
