It looks like they just bolted a bunch of engines together, no?

No. The way the blowers are mounted up looks custom. The V-24 engine is not.

Detroit made several configurations. This one was an old marine application where big power was needed.

They cannot run without a blower as the are 2 stroke. Later on they became turbocharged on top of being blown. Made big HP that way.

They are dirty and not fuel efficient in the least.

That thing is bad ass.

So the block is one?

Edit: It's two v-12's bolted together.

I believe the 71 in the V71 refers to 71 cubic inches per cylinder, Old school engines for sure, i don't think Detroit makes any 2 stroke diesels any more, they've moved on to newer technology, like someone said they were terribly inefficient per hp. And they had an awful reputation for leaking oil (I've heard from many people they used to call them Leaktroits). I'm not sure if the 24V is two blocks bolted together or not, but it was a factory motor, it's not a custom configuration, they were used in large yachts, they did use heads that only covered 3 or 4 cylinders in order to make servicing them easier. We have a customer with an older 58 Hatteras with 12V92's apparently they can rebuild the entire engine as it sits in the boat, re-sleave and hone the cylinders even, because the blocks can't be removed from the engine room without splitting the boat (they are installed before the decks are put on)

The reason they have blowers is being a two stroke they have no true intake stroke. When the piston is at or near BDC on power stroke the intake ports become exposed, the blower is naturally pumping air into the cylinder, while the exhaust valve on the head opens. Fresh air from the bottom pumps exhaust out the top. As the piston starts coming back up and closes off the intake port the exhaust valve also closes, the engine then enters a standard compression stroke, as it nears top dead center the fuel is injected creating combustion and they cycle repeats.

Conventional gas two stroke can aspirate themselves because they fill the crankcase and use a transfer port. But the configuration of the Detroit would not allow for this while achieving enough cylinder compression to self ignite the diesel fuel. So the blower is not there to add power, it's simply there to serve the function of compensating for a missing intake and exhaust stroke.

I read somewhere where this Spanish deal is a V-16.

They sound like none other.

Racey is right about the cu in. I have been aboard a few yahts with them. Most common are v8 and v6's. I think the V8 -92 was their largest cylinder displacement. Imagine almost a 100 cu in per cylinder making power on every stroke. :D
