My 496 had a double beep alarm this after on the way back to the launch ramp. I checked the drive oil and was below the add line. I put some in and the alarm kept going. I stopped again and engine oil was low too. I added some into that and the alarm stopped. My question is does the double beep sound for engine oil? I thought it was only water temp and drive oil. Anything else I should check?

Double beep is the "Hold up you have a problem" alarm. It is for a whole host of things.

Check your fluids at least every couple days of use, if not before every day of use. Running hard up and down the river in the heat these engines will use some oil, and most of these engines do not have a lot of reserve oil.

Could be raw water psi is low. Your impeller might be going at or the sencer dirty. It is on top of the raw water cooler.

I had a alarm took it to barrett had them hook the computer up to it and the was it. Cleaned it and back on the water. I was able to idle but when I got on the gat it went into limp mode. Off the gas fine again.

I have full power. Once I added fluids the alarms went away. Hopefully it was just low on fluids

Honestly, the 496 alarm will sound if it smells a fart. It could be like 100 things and yes I think low oil would be one.

The 496 does not have an engine oil level sensor. It does have a engine oil low pressure sensor.

I've always thought it a good idea to read the Mercruiser owner's manual and be familiar with alarms...they are there to keep the engine from being damaged, so it's kinda important to know what's going on.

Don'tcha think? :rolleyes

This is what my BIL told me over the phone yesterday, bunch of double beeps idling into a channel. Shut it off and checked all of the fluids, they were fine and he said most likely the raw water sensor being fussy. Ran a couple of hours and never came back.

I wonder if someone sells a display that would connect to the harness that would show a code while on the water, I would buy it.

I would buy it too. So many things it could be. Well with me I think I am ok as the beeping stopped once I added engine oil and drive oil earlier. They were both low. I am going to check the drive make sure it's not plugged up this am. I do the impeller every year so it shouldn't be that right?

My BIL said if it came back to either pull and clean the sensor or change it, same here with a new impellor.

I don't understand how anybody could put their boat in the water without checking all fluids and jus a visual check.

Now granted, something's jus happen out there [emoji202] [emoji106]

There is such a device. The Mercury Vessel View blue tooth plug. I have it on my boat. You use your phone and connect it. You can view real time and will show codes.

It's just plugs into the diag port right? No other wiring to do?

Since the low drive oil alarm is a steady beep and not a 2 per second beep, and there isn't an alarm for low oil level, you didn't fix anything. If your engine oil pressure was low you would have heard a constant tone.

Must have been a water psi then? Not sure

I'm thinking I may have picked something up and semi blocked the intake, after shutting it off to check things then restarting it never came back.

I'm getting that vessel view.

It's a great peace of mind. If I feel the motor is sounding different or something might be wrong, I connect to it and am reassured everything is what it should be.

CobraDave,

Will Vessel View mobile let me see the RPM of the engine while it is running?

Yes it will, as long as you have the right plug.
I looked into adding this and it would of required a couple changes to make it work

The 2 main tech's where I slip my boat have been there over 20 years each, it will be for them to figure out.

Honestly last weekend was the first time my boat has made a peep and it got my attention, I would love the peace of mind of knowing which thingy is upset.
