Is it a bad move to purchase a new 2023 AC heat pump which uses r410a?

Better do it now.

In 2024 R454b will replace R410a, and the new systems will cost up to $1,000 more.

Of course since the EPA announced they are restricting the production of R410a and other halogenated refrigerants by 40% next year, repairs and recharges of all older units will cost more.

Thanks, Joe.

It's not universal to go to 454b yet. Daikin is focusing on R-32 and is one of the world's largest manufacturers.

You are correct. I didn't want to go into tedious detail about the subject, my posts are already tragically long and boring.

Coincidentally, I bought a 6,000 BTU window unit for my shop office last month. It has electronic controls, a remote, and has so far worked flawlessly. In spite of our recent weather with temperatures in excess of 110° F, my possibly inaccurate pocket dial thermometer says the discharge air temp is a steady 42° F.

The compressor is the scroll type, and the refrigerant is R32. The nameplate operating pressures are a surprising 450 HS/250 LS PSI. It has an inverter driven soft start process that minimizes inrush current, operates on 120 volts AC, and the nameplate current draw is just 4.9 amps. I find this all pretty damn impressive for its $208 cost.

Intend to replace a 2015, 4 ton single stage, ducted heat pump after Jan 1. Hopefully r32 units will be readily available by then? Just replaced a similar 2 ton heat pump. Unfortunately, it is an r410a unit, soon to be phased out. That SUX.
