If you are an AZ resident and purchase from a private party (in any state) you will not pay sales tax when registering in AZ......if you are not an AZ resident but registering in AZ because you will use it primarily in AZ you will not be asked to pay the tax but as an out of state resident you COULD be subject to the sales tax and are at risk if using the boat in CA......it's a crapshoot :)

When you buy it drive it directly to AZ and register it there. It would actually be best to actually take delivery in AZ. register non resident in AZ. easy.

What I've always done is have the seller agree that he sold you his (boat/car/truck) for 300.00, cause it was broke. Never had anyone say no.

You pay Some tax that way, but not much. ;)

It's easy, as stated. But no need to rush to AZ to do the paperwork. If you are a cali resident, and you want to do non resident registration in AZ, you can do everything via mail. Go to the AZ fish and game website. I do it with all my boats. There is not even a need to store the boat in AZ. The trailer is another issue. If you live in and tow in Cali, it should be registered here. Now your AZ registration will be more expensive than Cali, but you'll avoid taxes. You'll need to do the math to see which way is the best in the long run.

In AZ boats are registered through the AZ Game and Fish. It is easy to do via mail/on-line or the nearest office is in Kingman........Boats and Cars are seperated in AZ but the trailer will need to be registered with the AZ MVD (Havasu).

Just be careful if you do this and then use the boat in CA (not a body of water that borders the state) but a lake within CA......pulling a trailer with an AZ registered boat and trailer with a CA registered car within the state as mentioned by BoatCop can be a recipe for disaster......just know the risks.

That's basically what I did when I bought my toy hauler. Super easy via the MVD website.

This is the way I've always understood this situation. In California and boat primary in AZ, more than 50 percent, no need to worry. Trailer needs to be registered in California and boat can be registered in AZ. You can even boat in California occasionally . Just be prepared to explain the situation if contacted.

I will do the boat and trailer in az. Sounds easy enough. Also just so I know when buying a boat in cali there are two pinks right for boat and trailer?

Yes. In AZ boat and trailer are titled and registered at different offices. Boat is at fish and game. Trailer at dmv. Easy peasy.

If you have an Arizona mailing address you won't have to pay taxes. I bought my boat from a California dealer and had it registered in Arizona as a non resident and the Jerry's Kids from the Assessor's office found out because it was originally registered in Cali and hit me for unsecured property tax, because I still store in California even though I use it in Arizona and have it registered in Arizona.

My newest boat was bought in Arizona and registered in Arizona so the Cali taxman doesn't know. Only the trailer is registered in California. So I'm good for the moment.

We just did this with our boat. Downloaded the form from the site, wrote a check (non-resident fees applied since we are not full time), and sent it in with the signed CA pink. They sent back the tags and a reg card with the new numbers, but no pink. I did the envelope registered and insured since there was a signed pink in there. Like everyone said, easy peasy.

For what it's worth - the last 2 new boats I bought were built in CA and delivered to me in AZ and registered in AZ as a non resident. They asked for proof the tax was paid before they let me register in AZ as non resident.

That's because it was a new purchase . AZ does not tax private sales.

Ok so my understanding is I can take title from seller to az and register it in az. I will then get new az numbers for the boat at that time. Should I do the trailer in az as well? Also for resident/non resident. Can I use my fathers havasu adress for a resident?

You should register the trailer in the same state as the tow vehicle.
If you have a CA tow vehicle, keep the trailer registered in CA. Do a perm trailer license plate, renew every 5 years.

Game and Fish will require you to prove that you are a resident to get resident rates. This at the very least means presenting a valid AZ driver's license. Last time I registered a "new to me" boat at the AZGF, the guy in front of me (a snowbird) was trying to get resident status because he lives here during the winter. He had a license from north of the border I believe, and they wouldn't give him resident status. He was pissed....

As already mentioned, register your trailer in the same state your tow vehicle is. Back when I lived in CA, my boat and trailer were registered in AZ and my truck in CA. The highway patrol pulled me over once and hassled me about it.

How much is the trailer in ca? Sales tax?

I think to begin with its $20. Renewal is 10 bucks every 5 years.
Tell them the trailer is worth $500 bucks and the tax will be around $40.

From CA DMV...
PTI Fees
Original/conversion (CVC ?5014). $20
Duplicate ID card (CVC ?5014). $7
Duplicate title (if paper title issued) (CVC ?9265). $20
Electronic lien and title (ELT) record (CVC ?9254) $20
Paper title (CVC ?9254) $20
Service (every five years) (CVC ?5014.1) $10
Substitute plate (CVC ?5014.1) $7
Transfer (CVC ?5014) $7

A lot of helpful info in here but I want to ask for clarification.

I am purchasing a boat currently registered in AZ; Private party. I myself would like to keep it registered in AZ as non-resident as well as keep the trailer in CA with the perm plates. I'd plan on picking it up this week and would like to have it registered and in my name before DS. What is the quickest way to do this?

Is the trailer already Cali tagged? If not , may have to do a VIN inspection if bringing with an AZ Title to cali, which is a pain in the ass. Any law enforcement friend can do it also though. If its already Cali titled, take to AAA office, done deal!

And like mentioned, make the drive to Kingman, get the boat handled there. Its real easy.

Last time I brought a vehicle back into CA with out of state plates they were able to do the vehicle inspection at the AAA office.........but that was 1998, things may have changed sonce then. I'd recommend a call to AAA and ask them because if you avoid the DMV in CA these days I'd highly recommend it :D

I think you are right Paul! The last time I went it was an Arizona Quad, and OHV are the only things the DONT inspect.

I agree, avoid the DMV at all costs! I guess Needles wouldnt be too bad though if needed!

From this post I am assuming this:

Boat currently registered in AZ
Trailer currently registered in CA

This is easy.
Call AZ game and fish, give them HIN, they will tell you if you need to bring the boat to them (not likely if already AZ registered). Go to Kingman office, get it registered in your name, no sales tax as it is private party. This will take 10 minutes in the office.

Go to CA DMV or AAA with your sale paperwork for trailer and transfer title of the trailer. Pay transfer fee and tax on the trailer (whatever you say the trailer cost) and be done in 10 mins. They won't need to look at the trailer. AZ just assumes the trailer cost is $2500, there is no negotiation on that from what I have seen.

If the trailer is in AZ and want to move it to CA reg, make sure the trailer VIN is visible because you will likely have to bring the trailer for inspection. If it is not visible, you will be in for a shit show. You'll need to call the trailer or boat MFG to hopefully get some original paperwork to verify the trailer VIN.

My boat is reg in AZ but the trailer is CA.

Keep in mind that if you reg it in AZ as none resident the annual reg fee is $264. :yikes
If reg in CA it is much less. Been a long time but I think on my last boat it was like $10 every other year in CA??? Maybe one of the other inmates can confirm.

CA just comes after you for the 1% unsecured property (luxury) tax though.

Correct. Trailer is perm tagged and boat expires next Month. I rather keep the boat registered in AZ and pay the non-resident fee. Just wanted to see the quickest way to do it as I really only have one day (Thursday).

Correct as well. Boat will stay in AZ, already registered in AZ. Trailer is already registered in Cali. I wonder what it will cost to have the trailer transferred into my name?

Yeah, I am sure it may be cheaper but for some reason I rather just keep it registered there, partially cause of the painted numbers lOL

Side note:

Why do you have to pay taxes anyway during a private sale? The tax has already been paid when purchased?

Along those lines, are you supposed to pay tax on stuff at a garage sale then when purchased? Or items off of craigslist?

I had to register a toy hauler this past weekend and was sick with the tax bill. Made no sense as to why we pay tax on something that has been taxed already.

$15 for trailer title transfer plus sales tax on the trailer if it is already registered and up to date. You'll need to put some price on the trailer.. put $500. You'll be out of there for around $65 bucks. I think it was a couple bucks to get an actual pink slip for the trailer. They don't issue them by default.

It was cheaper and easier for me to keep my trailer registered in CA that to register it in AZ. AZ said they needed affidavits and crap signed by the PO to get it transferred to AZ. If you wanted it in AZ I think it is way easier to just register it in your name in CA, then go register it in AZ under your name if AZ trailer registration is your ultimate goal.
