Putting in a new fence at the house. I set 4x4 treated posts with a Simpson CBS 4x4 column base and set them in 12”x18” of concrete.

Reason being if I ever had to change the post I wouldn’t need to replace the concrete. In theory anyways lol.

Original plan was 1x6 redwood with a carpenters pencil worth of spacing in between each plank.

Redwood is running roughly $2.25 a ft.

I’ve got this crazy idea to use 5.5x.75 Hardie board trim. Probably paint it charcoal to match the house. House is white with the existing hardie planking painted black.

Other than the weight increase & if someone kicked the plank it might crack anyone have a reason not to go this route? Before paint I can get the Hardie for roughly $1.15 a lineal ft.

Is the Hardie board sturdy enough to stay put without sagging over time?

Hey that's a great idea, for my gate. I've got to build a new side gate. This time I'm making it from 1 inch square tube. Was going to buy the redwood or cedar, but I want zero clearance, so I would have to dry it first. Hardie board would go right up.

Assuming his running it vertically, it should be fine, it's his cross members between the posts that are gonna suffer.

Big weight difference between the 2 products

I can get it in 12’ lengths. 6 ft OC posts. The stuff is pretty stiff holding it up sideways by myself.

Even the siding feels like it wouldn’t sag.

One way to find out lol

use CBSQ44's instead. We do a lot of these on top of property line curb walls at the coast and when the posts shrink the bolts in the regular CB's loosen up and it's maintenance to tighten and straighten. The SDS screws in the Q's seem to stay tight

'Am I understanding correctly?
You're post are setting in column bases ?
If so what/how are you getting any shear value? IE: what is stopping it from blowing over? (Except for the nails in the column base) bolts or sds screws will just loosen over time.

Redwood. Do it once be done. No painting or repainting. Coated screws or hot dipped ring shanks it will last 30 plus years.

We’ve begun! Hoping to get a good chunk of it done tomorrow. Shot it with finish nails so my wife can approve the spacing before we really get after it. Current spacing is 1/2” using a carpenters pencil set vertical as a spacer. We will finish it with ring shanked 8’s.

In the end the gaps/posts will be trimmed out with 1x6s running verticality.

Need to get a metal post to set on top of the block wall so we can anchor in the corner.

I Don’t have much fence experience other than 2 houses but curious What are you hoping to have for finished spacing when those wood boards shrink and 1/2” spacing grows to ???? I like horizontal fencing, should look cool when you’re done, please post pics.

That’s the current debate lol. I want tighter spacing (realistically 1/2” finished) and my wife wants closer to 1”.

I only set 18 pieces from the 90 I bought. Grabbed all dry ones so hoping the shrink is minimal. It’s been dry down here the last few days. I stacked 30 pieces around the house tonight in hopes they dry out.

Hopefully I have better pics tomorrow [emoji1303]

You will get some shrinkage, but the dog will be happy to see out.

Here’s two sides of one we did on a house I built 3 years ago that stayed tight. I ran a redwood 2x4 flat over the top of the 4x4’s, with another 2x4 redwood on edge under it ( strongback style), two more 2x4’s on edge between the 4x4’s , and then pairs of flat 2x4’s vertically approx 30” on center to get nailing ( screws in this case) every 30” . Another thing to consider in Cali is “line of sight” rules for fence height when coming out of the driveway . In our county 36” ht. Would be required close to the sidewalk by the driveway approach . Looking good so far though -

After the Labor Day storm took down my fence, I rebuilt it, pretty much the same as was taken down. Insurance covered it, and I used the old boards to cover an ugly metal roofing fence my redneck neighbors put between our properties.

Brought back an old memory.

When I was 4 or 5, my dad had me helping him, painting a fence around our patio. Nothing special, just a brush, paint on, paint off like Mr. Miyagi and Daniel-san.

In Nursery School, the next week, the teacher brought out the easels, pads and paints and told us to paint something. I asked, "What should I paint", She asked what I liked to paint. I said... "A fence". So she said "Then paint a fence."

That afternoon when my Mom came to pick me up, the teacher brought her in and suggested I should see a child psychologist. Mom asked why, and the teacher showed her my painting, that consisted of a large easel pad page, painted completely, top to bottom, side edge to edge, solid black. Mom asked me what it was and I said. "A fence." She then asked the teacher if she told me to paint a fence, or paint a PICTURE of a fence. She had said "Paint a fence"

So I painted a fence, the same way I painted the fence with my dad the weekend before.

Although she might have been on to something about the psychologist, it just didn't have anything to do with my painting abilities.

We make these for gate privacy covers, this is mill aluminum, so it can be powder coated in any color. Even clear powder coating if you like. Just a design idea, and of course it never rust and never rots out. Screw to any frame.

I like those panel designs, some more than others of course but i can easily see any one of those built into a gate frame for a modern style gate system that would look bitchen. A clean rectangular tube frame in brushed stainless with the panel in a color or even cleared would look great. Satin black frame w/clear over lightly brushed alum. panel would be a nice contrast as well..
How thick are the panels? What are the panel dimensions? Could they be special ordered in 1/8" or 1/4" thick sheet? Some of those with the geometric solid grid lines would easily work and allow a hidden back up frame for a very clean face presentation, some others would take a little more creativity to have a clean/blind back support. Please PM me a web link.
My apologise to the OP for thread derail, i got kinna excited and carried away.
Your fence looks great...I hope you don't have any donkey neighbors that will call the city on you for your proposed fence height. As a fencing contractor since the late 80's, except for rural area's, 4' out front is the tallest we've generally seen allowed with 3' being the most common. Will you be doing a slide gate at the drive entrance?

Thanks wzuber.

They are .080 thick, H38 hardness on the 3' x 5' man gate sizes. In the larger sizes, H34 hardness, in 4' x 8' and now 5' X 10'. The large sizes are all powder coated. I thought of making an RDP on before the last order but did not garner enough interest. We are not planning on placing a new order anytime soon as we have stocked up for the coming year, just ordered more beams and posts in express color that seems to be 70% of the current demand. I am sitting on 500K in inventory! Go figure on color choices, something we cannot predict. . Even Toll Brothers have purchased these for their new model homes in Summerlin. The gate sizes are $275 each to RDP members FOB Las Vegas. We have most designs in the 4' X 8', check this one out;

No worries [emoji1303].

Slide gate for vehicle access and a 3’0 man gate to the left of that.

Front fence will be 55” finished. We’ll see with the neighbors. So far we haven’t had any issues. LADBS calls for 3.5’ max in the front of a R lot, side yard fence can be a maximum of 8ft if lot is over 40ft wide. We’re at roughly 60ft. I don’t plan on the side fence exceeding 6-6.5’.

thx BPI.....that could look killer back lit as wall art in a cool frame sys. on a patio etc. thx for the info. my minds workin on some different ideas. The stated thickness/hardness and gate panel sizes sound pretty well designed for a good useful application. I'll share you info. w/some architect and builder friends/associates. website info?

Yes, I have custom colored Tex screws.

this is an interesting subject can you guys have some great ideas I’m not a designer or a contractor we just manufacture this stuff and sell it but obviously we consulted many people before splash and some crazy money at this business. As far as the man gate yes you would screw the mill finish aluminum panel to your metal gate and have entire structure of powder coated I’ve attached a photo below of our supplier in Las Vegas that did exactly this.

also above is a recent project done by a Las Vegas contractor using our material.

it’s a privacy divider have you think a little outside the box you could actually make offense of our material. It would never fade or chip as a powder coat is about the finest known to man I’ll let you guys figure out the cost. A 2” thin wall lattice so this is a 2 in.² tube 20 feet long .048 thick , RDP price is $34.00 each, in 3” square they are $52.00 each + posts every 20' and brackets. If you think about it you couldn’t take a 20 foot piece to be powder coated for that price much less Amma 2604 spec.

For any project, RDP members PM me for special pricing or my cell.

If self installing you have to be a house account, we have contractors in NV and CA, I protect their areas but a few house (RDP) accounts/sales are fine. RD has been good to us. We have designers and contractors in Oceanside, Temecula, Simi Valley and Burbank. We are just a manufacturer, U.S Customs licensed importer, and distributor. NO middleman, Nevada corporation, so no state income taxes, and lower overhead, these are the reasons this is so reasonable and high quality.

Not sure of your location but most cities only allow 4' high from the front line of the house to the street. 6' is good going back from the front.

I want to do both gates out of steel. I just don’t have faith that an all wood one would keep square and true after a few years.

The vehicle gate will mirror the fence layout but with a steel structure to mount the wood to.

yes a steel tube frame assembly with good hinges will swing nice forever as well a slide gate with v-groove wheels and a good guide roller assembly. In the event you want someone to fab those up for you thats what I do, have done for the last 30+ yrs. They are pretty simple and when done well work very smoothly and last forever.

Thanks , yeah it snapped admirably in 2013 or so at Harvey Street in Cambria and was re-purposed into a shower . Client does mosaics and I prepped it for her (no other red guard up inside this piece other than on the stick )
