Do u have any connections to someone who has a semi with a trailer.
If so , go get the written test done and get ur permit and start driving, then after you got it down take the driving test

If not. Good luck [emoji202] I don't know anything about the schools

Your best bet is to go get your permit on your own. Download or get the book from DMV, study and go take the test. It is easy.

Not sure where you are located but Jiffy's has locations in Sacramento and Redding. They provide the truck, make the driving test appointment for you and run you through a day and a half crash course for $750. I have used them for 20+ employees and all have passed.

If you need extensive driving instruction then maybe try Debbie Dootson Truck School

My 19 year old nephew just went thru process, took about a month. He passed written test, got permit, then practiced towing a 5th wheel and boat around on a couple weekends. Then on scheduled test date, Jiffy Truck Rental for $750 met him at DMV a few hours beforehand, gave coaching lessons on inspection/walk around test, practiced driving and backing, and provided truck for road test.
He was just an unexperienced, non-trailering Class C licensee before. Now he's Big Bad CDL Class A Trucker with lots of test date experience…. :D

I would not recommend America's Truck Driving School if you don't already know how to drive. a coworker and I just finished there, we both passed, but basically you spend 20 hrs reading a pretrip inspection from a paper, another 20 hrs driving back and forth in a tiny parking lot, and a total of 4 hrs on the road, no classroom, no real instruction other then being told to read what the paper says, and turn now, backup now, no your doing it wrong. we both have 5th wheel toy haulers so we already knew what to do, basically went to the school just to use the truck for the test.

So they made you proficient in shifting the following transmission 9 , super 10 ,10 , 13 , 15 , 18 speed ? I am just curious because when and if you apply for a job in trucking you got be proficient in shifting to make the truck move .

I used Debbie Dootson , but I think they closed. Post inspection was alot to remember, and the air brake test is important also.

they made me proficient in going from 1st to reverse in a 6 speed medium duty truck with the throttle disconnected. lol. It was for work and only to drive an automatic dump truck with air brakes. it would be nice to at least know how to shift an 18 speed.

Lately most all of the new drivers that come in to apply for a driving job and don't have a clue how to shift at all they get in the truck ask don't you have any autoshift trucks .

If you test in an auto you can only drive an auto. When you test in a manual you can drive both.

The DMV makes you double clutch rather than float so I think that scares the millennial away lol

I learned on an 18 speed lowboy beast but took my test in a nine speed refer truck. So glad I made the practice harder than the test. I aced the driving, COLA, and walk around.

I rarely use it anymore but keep it active for my RV and once in a great while for work when they need a body in an emergency.

Did you have a CDL driver take your rig there with you, or did you just drive it down with your permit?

You will have to double clutch. The pretrip is extensive and you are required during your skills test to back up straight, offset back, alley dock and parallel park truck and trailer, go to a school they will teach it all. Dootson is closed.

That is true if you test in a autoshift truck that the driver has a restriction on the license , what I am running into is that you can to school get the basics on shifting and pass the test at MVD and say I have a CDL it's only 10 miles or less big ideal with no restriction on the license go out and get a driving job but a lot of companies are only using autoshift trucks. So a lot of drivers get complacent with using the autoshift truck new or veteran drivers so when they get into a 9,10, super 10 , 13 speed a lot of drivers just don't have skill to shift a loaded truck let alone properly down shift and use the jake for speed control . Yes shifting is skill even veteran drives lose it when they in a autoshift they go for test drive and most like I haven't a shifting truck in awhile , also that they have not been exposed to the different transmission used in trucks .

they don't make you do the entire outside outside inspection anymore. the show you a picture of the area you need to inspect, like engine company or rear of truck, and you just do those sections.

Non Commercial class A? I barley studied walked in and failed the first go around, then went for round 2
5 minutes later and passed the written. practice your walk around thoroughly , remember to check for mud flaps i missed that part.
The driving test wasn't that bad except the backing into an ally part .I don't recommend taking a 50' trailer to take the test i failed the first go around.
Good luck

Noncommercial Class A License Requirements
To obtain an original noncommercial Class A license -
Adults must:

  • Complete an application for a driver license (DL 44).
  • Pay the application fee.
  • Submit a Health Questionnaire (DL 546) dated not more than two years prior to the date of your application.
  • Pass the basic Class C law test, unless you renewed your Class C license within the past 12 months.
  • Pass the Recreational Vehicles and Noncommercial Class A Trailers law test.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Pass a pre-trip inspection test.
  • Pass the skills test.
  • Pass a driving test while towing the type of vehicle you wish to be licensed for.
Minors must:
  • Complete the items listed above.
  • Meet the additional requirements listed in the California Driver Handbook in the Provisional License section.
Examinations:
  • Recreational Vehicles and Noncommercial Class A Trailers law test. You must pass the law test based on the information contained in this booklet. The test may be taken at any DMV field office. You may make an appointment online at www.dmv.ca.gov or by calling DMV at 1-800-777-0133.
  • Vehicle Safety Check. Before the pre-trip inspection test, you must demonstrate that the turn signals, brake lights, horn, and emergency flashers are working. This is not part of your pre-trip test. However, if any of these items are not working properly or are missing your driving test will be postponed.
  • Pre-trip Inspection Test. The pre-trip inspection test is a knowledge test. You must identify and explain the features and equipment on the vehicle which should be inspected before operating the vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with air brakes, you must demonstrate and explain how the air brake system works. Inoperable, missing, or unsafe equipment will postpone the driving test.
  • Skills Tests. Skills tests are designed to demonstrate your skill in stopping, backing in a straight line, completing a right turn around a cone or marker, and backing into a camping space. These tests are done at low speed and test how well you can maneuver the vehicle.
  • Driving Test. The driving test includes entering and exiting a freeway, freeway driving with lane changes, right and left turns into one-way and two-way traffic, railroad crossings, and driving on a grade or steep hill, etc. You may make an appointment by calling 1-800-777-0133. Online appointments are not available for this type of driving test.
  • Health Questionnaire. A Health Questionnaire (DL 546) form is required and must be given to DMV for review and approval before your license is issued and then every two years after that. The Health Questionnaire expires two years from your signature date. Failure to maintain a valid Health Questionnaire form with DMV will mean that your license is valid only for Class C and, if endorsed, for Class M1 or M2 vehicles. Health Questionnaire forms are available online at www.dmv.ca.gov.

I would think long and hard about being a driver , I have been driving since the age of 18 began hauling hay for a friends dad that own a dairy in Hemet then after my 21st birthday I able to go out of state that is when I did over the road it's a hard life being otr driver . Now days it's gotten a lot harder with the ELD and CSA points .

The overhang on this trailer was soo long, and there is a lightpost in front of the alleydock it just wasn't possible. any of the other alleydock he would have been fine, but just could get a wide enough radius.

Auto shift. Bwahahahaha

The walk in & walk out “I got me CDL” is the reason we have soooooo many fucking rules. It blows me away how many drivers dont have any common sense or the will to learn. No I wasnt born with a CDL on my diaper, but I spent a lot of my own time watching, riding, learning. 25 years I still not sure I know a damn thing about trucks  But I can sling gears pretty darn good. Hell I learned in a 5&4 behind a 6v72. Whats that you ask? Lol Its a mother fucker to learn & do without grinding the shit outta the tranny.

Might as well put robots in the road trux, they are easier to program & dont try to take short cuts. :(

Yup thats me that’s funny
I gave it my best shot backing that beast up but that tail swing got me all screwed up. I ended using a smaller stacker trailer for the test. Even the supervisor that worked for the DMV said it wasn’t possible

that is absolutely hilarious, not that you didnt pass, but that was actually you. sweet setup btw. I had just finished my permit test and was waiting for my coworker to finish. I watched for a while, you got screwed, like you said, no way to swing the tail in with that light pole in front. they should have let you do it in the other "alley dock"

The pre-trip inspection stumps a lot of people. The key is to practice out loud and do it repeatedly.

If you Google pre-trip inspection and airbrake test you will find a bunch of practice and study guides to help you.

When I took my test I used the study guides and they really helped me. I don’t have time to mess around and fail. I only wanted to take the test once and I was able to get through just fine.
