The wife and I picked up this deal from The Do-it center over the weekend. Its a little plastic box that is painted to look like a present. Has a water tube coming out of the bottom and goes to the tree stand. This is sooo much easier then trying to climb under the tree and check the water level. Works awesome so far.

Check them out.

Watering a tree is a waste. Over the years we have tried all kinds of ways to keep a tree alive. Fact is once its cut its dead. It'll drink up the water but it won't make it through the whole tree. Many people will argue this but I have years of experience with this. If it makes you feel better than water it. Best way to keep a tree green longer is don't keep you house to hot and keep it away from heat sources (windows that get a lot of sun, heaters, etc.) And also try to buy the freshest tree you can. Also waiting longer to get a fresher tree isn't always good. Most trees are cut already and will sit out before delivery. The sun beats them up.

pretty good advice:thumbsup

my neighbor told me that he puts a little coca cola in the bottom of his stand with water. he said he only does it the first day he gets it. claims to give the tree more/longer life. fact or fiction?

Like the Borax mixtures and other special blends the coke helps to keep the sap from coagulating at the end of the stump allowing more water to be absorbed. Making the mix(whatever you choose) with HOT water will help also. This is exactly the reason they make or suggest a fresh cut at the bottom when first putting the tree into a holder.
.
Junkers has good advise too, some common sense ideas:thumbsup But a well prepped tree will absorb the fluids and stay healthier longer, albeit already dead.:)

Waste of time. Tell him its in his head. Sometimes you get a good tree and sometimes you get a bad one. I've had trees stay green past new years without a drop of water. When we had our retails lots I used to tell people to put a half a cup of sugar and a couple aspirin. Not sure what it did but it usually got them to buy a water stand from us. LOL!!!!!!!!

We have tried the no water deal with the trees and they just dont last that long. I agree the tree is already dead but like cut flowers you can keep them fresher longer buy letting them sit in water. This system does this without the pain of climbing under the tree.

There is a big difference between a fresh cut flower in water and a fresh cut Christmas tree in water. When you cut the bottom of the tree after a couple days a sap line will form blocking the tree from absorbing any water. But if it gives you piece of mind go ahead and water it. :thumbsup;):D:D

Its a crap shoot. Every tree is different. Some are healthier then others. Also like I said, people who keep their houses really warm or put the tree in front of a window will have their tree dry out faster. Its all in your head.

Hense all the concoctions of mixes to add to the water....those, in theory, are to help keep the sap from coagulating as easily.

OK so it postpones it a day or 2. Honestly Zig, I grew up as a kid selling Christmas trees. My family has been in the business for almost 50 years. I watched my grandmother experiment with all kinds of different watering methods. None made any noticeable difference in making a tree last longer.

The tree is dead afterall......I don't doubt you at all, picking the best tree from the getgo is your best bet.
And you sold unneeded watering tree stands too:D:D:D:D

This is good to know. I have always put up the tree and watered it that day and the next. Then I would just say fuck it. Now I know it probably did not make a differance.
