1987 Mercruiser Alpha Gen1 5.7. I knew when I bought the boat it needed this work done. What would a shop charge me for the work? I figured 3-4 hrs shop time plus parts. Also who would you guys recommend in Vegas/Henderson?

I'd ask Outdrive1. He has a longstanding reputation on this board of outstanding service at a more than fair price. My recent service experience with him confirms just that.

I am sure he can at least give you a ball park price.

A couple years back I had to replace the shift bellows and shift cable on the same unit you have. I did it in three hours on a hot afternoon in Parker.

Should not be that big of a deal.

The shift bellows is a weak link for water intrusion into a boat engine compartment.

Some shops have flat rate jobs on basic services, lube, oil, filter, impellers. Last I checked shop rate ranged between $90 - $120/hour, plus parts.

I'm sure there are reputable shops in Vegas/Henderson, but everyone I've used I had to repair or replace something on the boat that was working perfectly when I dropped it off. Not to mention the boat was filthy.

My advice is to tow it to Havasu!

$160.00 parts and 3-4 hours labor which at my shop is $255.00- $340.00.

If you need a bellows you more than likely need a gimbal bearing.

Do your trim sending units work also? If not now is the time to do those too.

4 hours with a shift cable is a decent price.

Alpha bellows seem to go out a lot quicker than Bravos. Volvos are even worse.

I always thought to my self why would Mercury design a bellow that fails so quickly.

Not a good design.
