So I finally got around to setting up my amp / receiver in our home gym and just wanted to make sure I've wired this up right. And had some questions for the pros

I got this Denon AVR-S750H from costco over 2 years ago lol, and finally decided to hook it up. I had 4 ceiling speakers installed in the gym. I initially wired 2 speakers to the "front" speakers on L and one R. I then wired the other 2 speakers to the "surround back". It seemed like just the "front's" were working. I unplugged the fronts and noticed that the "surround back" were actually on, just very quiet. Is this normal since it is designed for surround sound?

I'm not looking for surround sound in the gym, just powerful music. So I ended up wiring 2 speakers into the FRONT L and another 2 into the FRONT R, and now they all seem to working at the same level! Is this the way it should be, or will it mess something up?

also I planned on eventually adding 2 more speakers to second zone, but is there a way to select which zones you want on with this amp?

haven't set up the HEOS app yet, but will this allow you to power up the unit without needing the remote? I was trying to set this up to where you can just walk in the gym, and use my phone to power up and control all the music.

back of the amp looks like this

Sounds like you need to adjust the channel settings

Did you have the front speaker outputs set to speaker ‘B’? Also, you might have to adjust the levels on the rear channels.

Make sure your DSP is set to “all channels stereo” or similar, and not a surround mode.

The “surround back” outputs are reassignable- so they would be your other powered zone.

Edit: just realized fronts were working- check your DSP and levels on the surrounds

Edit:
What he said ^^^^

Surround speakers only put out effects sounds, they aren’t full-range channels like the front.

So you need to see if there’s a setting for A and B speakers, then select both.

Wiring two speakers to one channel’s output puts some additional strain on the amp, may or may not be bad for it depending on things…are they wired in series or parallel?
What speakers and what’s the ohm rating?
And how loud are you gonna push them?

I have a Denon amp and my second zone (outside patio) is setup as a HEOS zone, I run RCA cables to a separate Crown amp.

I just combined the + & - of two sets of speakers and stuck one pair in the FRONT L and the other pair in the FRONT R

I definitely do not know what I'm doing here... lol

front looks like this... does not have an A/B option

It looks like you need this: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=38160

I have a few Denon's, (1) main living room surround w/subwoofer with 9 speakers through "A&B" and Zone 2 for outside pool/bar area controlled through the switch shown above with an AMP.
All controlled through a Matrix Switch but that's another thread.

From memory doing mine the B speakers are the surround backs. And yes, you need to go into the setting and adjust those levels.
I assume you have downloaded the set up from Denon site.

I wish i was home I'd type you through it. FYI: once you have set the Speaker B level it doesn't change when you raise our lower the main volume.
You have to go into those settings each time to change the volume for the B speakers

And I'm not positive but for some reason I want to say when my wife connects to it using bluetooth it powers up the amp. (I think anyways)
Good luck - got a little frustrated doing mine

So they’re wired in parallel, that’s good.

Post up the speakers…it’s likey gonna be fine for average volume levels. That’s a decent receiver.

If we know the speaker impedance in ohms, we can tell you for sure if the amp can handle the load.

You will have to read the receiver’s specifications and the speakers specifications and do some arithmetic to decide if the speakers need to be wired in series or parallel

I have the newer version of that receiver and issue. Haven't had a chance to play with it. I'm running Monoprice speakers in ceiling and 12" Monoprice sub.

Sorry but these things can get complicated.

Have you tried adjusting the source ? without that being in the right selection the other outputs are disabled.

This Amp doesnt have a speaker b option. Run all four ceiling speakers thru front R and L and you should be fine if you dont push it too much!

It's a Zone 2 option above the SAT/CBL button which runs from the Back surround speakers if not using a 7.1 setup

Going from memory the Zone 2 source ( if set to source) will play what your main output is playing.
If you have the Zone 2 speakers wired to the Back Surrounds I think the steps are
Go to your settings General then audio that might be reversed Audio then general
scroll to you zone 2 level and adjust to the level you want it at.
As I said earlier I'm pretty sure the Zone 2 levels do not adjust when you adjust the main volume, you need to adjust that
in the settings each time. I just found a good level I like my second room to me and leave it alone.

Again. Good luck

I got this the other day for 4 zones in the house. Has bluetooth, audio in, and subwoofer out. Works perfect for volume at each zone and turning zones off. Once you get the volume how you like at each zone you can use the mast volume to bump all of the zone up or down accordingly. Sound output is just fine for my needs.

Before this I had an old Yamaha receiver that was prime in it's day, just too big and bulky plus didn't have bluetooth so had to use external.

There's a setup menu on the Denon and Marantz AVRs that will walk you through the setup process. After that, you can do the tuning calibration with the antenna looking thing that comes with it, or just set it to all zones stereo if you don't want surround.

From the Heos app you can turn it on/off, volume, songs etc

I wonder if I should just be using something like this instead.

4 of these so far. older speakers... I had a spec sheet somewhere, but can't find it now.

Did you get the speaker level worked out or have you decided not to use the amp and go another direction?

Haven’t had a chance to mess with it yet. I’d like to use it… unless it’s smarter to run this unit in the house for. Surround sound type system. In the gym (where it’s is currently) I just need something that can power 4 speakers (with the ability to expand 2-4 more speakers in a different selectable zone) via Bluetooth and has a output for a woofer. So if that Amazon amp is all I need, might be smarter to switch to something like that??

As stated above, put 2nd pair back on the surround L and R. Set DSP or surround mode to all channel stereo. both Pairs will be the same then. When you’re ready for the third pair, hook to Z2 they can play independent or same source at their own volume level. Yes HEOS app can make all settings from app ie: power volume source etc…
