I have a feeler out on a 20 hull and trailer. I can fit a 21' in my garage... wondering if theres much difference between the two, if the 21 is a much deeper V, or if the 1' difference is mostly in the seating area.

if theres not much difference between the two ill pursue the 20 footer, but if the 21 is a better design for a mild bbc and looking to go with 2 buckets and a bench across the back and hopefully a hatch.

any input would be greatly appreciated.

^^^^^ This ^^^^^

The actual length of the Spectra 20 is closer to 21 feet than 20 as its 20' 10". The model name is a Spectra 20 and no such thing as a Spectra 21 was ever sold by Spectra. If you see someone listing a Spectra 21 they don't know what they are talking about.

Would you like to buy a mint condition Ford F-151? How about a Chevy K1501? Maybe you are a Dodge fan... I have a sweet Ram 3501 for sale. See how stupid that looks? Selling a Spectra 20 as a 21 is just as bad.

Including the hitch, swim step, jet or outdrive, . . . ? I couldn't unless I would have cut an opening in the garage door. With the break away hitch I think it now would fit.

Cheers, Mark

The Spectra 20 is 20'10" long, if you go with a jet it is 42' long and an out drive is just a bit shorter than that, go v drive and gain some space :) My 20 Vdrive with plates and on trailer with removable tongue is 22'6", I have seen a lot of these well over 24' and a couple at 25'.

daaaaamn 42 feet long!

im gonna need to upgrade my garage.

the one i was looking at is a berk jet, id LOVE a vdrive. theres that tt20 spectra open bow (minus motor) for $10k which is a great price and im sure it looks even better than in the pictures... but i need another project and this time take some time on it now that i have a garage and nothing but time on the weekends with my wedding done etc...

What sort of "ride" are you looking for? Between myself and 3 friends we own quite a few Spectra variants. The 20 Spectra in a Jet format needs thrust angle control... without it the boat bounces and beats you up on almost any water but glass. I would not buy a Spectra without spending some time behind the wheel of some rough water. While I can appreciate a Spectra Jet and the advantages it offers I would not own one as a primary ride. If you want to run weekends I would run a prop. For mid-week a Spectra Jet makes great sense.

i currently have a 18 foot tahiti with a panther. i didnt know what i was getting myself into when i first bought it. we currently go to havasu on the weekends and we stay near havasu springs. i get BEAT UP out there in my little float in the afternoons once the wind picks up or even early morning with a little breeze. i cant run an engine cover and the wife lost her balance and basically sat on my exhaust, which was as cool as exhaust goes, but still burned the shit out of her leg. she does NOT want anything to do with getting in/out of the boat unless we're at a dock or the beach where she can get in from the deck. i tried to tell her its not a party zone back there and to get in and sit down. anyways i want a bench seat with a hatch.

im looking at the spectra because ive always heard great reviews of them, i know that they're not going to blow the doors off of anything by any means unless you throw gobs of power at em and even then you're flying by the seat of your pants. i would probably reuse my mild bbc, MAYBE later on build a blower motor out of it.

growing up my dad had a bunch of flatbottoms and then we got a 21 foot tarva that was originally a catalina ski race boat. it was a typical daycruiser style and i loved it. it was slow when it needed to be, family friendly, and easy to get in/out of with the cav plates, crawl over the hatch just dont get the engine wet unless you wanted to polish it when we got home. it sat 5, it had plenty of freeboard and it handled chop fairly well and we spent most of our time out at mead and it did well. there was plenty of space under the deck for a decent sized cooler and with the raised floor the drive equipment was pretty much out of the way and you didnt notice it.

this is why im looking at the 21 spectra. i love the style, it brings back memories for me. id love to find a vdrive but most of em are rigged beyond weekend cruiser or they're asking retarded amounts of money for them. id *LOVE* to find a bare vdrive hull or rigged without interior and motor. i would settle for a jet, especially something with a berk and i would of course go with a place diverter. i could see myself in either. i do NOT want an i/o.

something like this would be *PERFECT*:

however im looking for a project, this thing is minus motor turn key and beautiful.

i can only fit a 21 in my garage. my current competition tandem trailer would fit it if i needed to reuse it and it fits inside no problem at a slight angle. i now have a garage to store it in and plenty of time to start another project. ive done everything from stringers to bulkheads in my tahiti and it just doesnt suit our needs anymore.

We have had our fair share of "oh the exhaust is hot" stories too. I threw the doghouse style hatch in the trash a few years ago and like being able to do quick glances at the motor to make sure all is well. It makes working on everything back there much easier. But this year I will be installing a full hatch for all of the reasons you mentioned.

There are no Spectra 21's... but the 20's do pretty well for their size. The V isn't as steep as it needs to be for certain water but the boat can take a beating and survive. I have a buddy with a Spectra 20 and he runs it as fast as the motor will allow regardless of the water. It can be brutal on the passengers but it can also be a lot of fun. The Parker Strip on a big weekend requires lots of throttle control because that boat loves to fly out of the water. I have hurt my neck and back in that boat but it's always been a blast and I enjoy riding and driving in it. But if I compare it to my Spectra 24 V-Drive the 20 Jet ride is just too rough for the sort of water we end with on Arrowhead on just about every summer weekend.

And you are right about the speed... the Spectra 20 I have spent a lot of time in has a 460 Ford punched out a little. It is probably a 450hp motor and that's good for 50 MPH at the river with a light load of people and pops. You won't win any races with a Spectra unless you throw a lot of power at it. And with most Spectra jets being a no stringer design you have to do lots of work to ensure the hull can handle the speeds a big boy motor can generate.

There are lots of "project" Spectra 20's out there right now. I will start posting up (in this thread) the ones I know of. What sort of price range are you looking at?

Aloha
