so 20 or so years ago when we started using Quickbooks you simply paid approx. $200 for a desktop version that would last a few years before needing to be updated/replaced or whatever. We purchased a new version a couple years ago and it's been nothing but a memory hog computer bloatware PITA.

Quickbooks is always sending pop ups in the software, locks you out unless you sign into the Intuit main account, and now they want $549 annual fee just to keep the software running.

We don't use ANY of their add ons, like A/P, payroll, tax payments, etc. just very very basic bookeeping.

Does anyone know of an alternative. I'm sick of being gouged by these clowns

I've used GNUCash for years, it's very simple double entry accounting software, but fully customizable and very capable.

It's a free open source software, it's worked well for me. It's free so it may be worth you trying just to see if it will work.

I hate to say it but they have a monopoly on the market and there is really nothing out there that compares. They are phasing out quickbooks desktop version soon so you will have to go to QB online. I have a love and hate relationship with quickbooks but if you know how to use it or hire a bookkeeper, it does a good job.

I use them and have enterprise from them. Been using them for 20 years. I had to upgrade a few times as I have way too many part numbers. All in all not to bad of experience. I do payroll through them. I have a book keeper that does the more involved stuff I don't want to deal with.

The problem with online is they charge you per company.

If you have a whole bunch of entities that just hold an asset and have a couple entries a year, it becomes a little ridiculous to pay a monthly fee for those.

Yes, that is true.

I’ve stayed with the desktop version, primarily because of the multiple entity issue with the online version.

I love the bank feed center, which allows you to download credit card transactions from your bank. Unfortunately, if you have a technical issue it’s difficult to get the bank and Intuit to stop blaming each other. They’ve completely dropped support for Discover recently, again with each blaming the other. It’s possible to import a CSV file, but the instructions are ridiculously complicated for an old guy like me….at least in the amount of time I’m willing to spend figuring it out. 🤷‍♂️

We've used it for years, I have a bookkeeper, but had gotten to where I could find and do most anything in the way of reports, write checks, etc., then, as of last May, no more support, I understood it as we HAD to switch to QB Online, so we did. How could one program, but two versions be soooo different? I couldn't even print a check for months, much less understand the logic of the damn online program. Now, 8 months later, I still don't like it as I did the desk top version, but I can run it okay, and I'm not scared of it and mad at it like I was this summer. We've got the "essentials" version, so it is more than it used to be, at $27.00 per month.

I got quickbooks online when I started my business 2 years ago and I haven't found a single thing that it does well. Absolutely everything about it is shit. I use it for inventory management as well and it requires constant workarounds.

I just found MRPEasy, which is more manufacturing software...but after 3 days of using it, it's leaps and bounds better than quickbooks. I can much more easily keep my shit in order and run off a few reports for my accountant, who has reviewed it and doesn't see any issues. Base plan is $49/month, but I'm on the $69/month plan...very customizable to make it do what I want.

Something seems off here...

I still have my old desktop versions, I have to log into every so often, and I don't get any pop ups at all when I do.

Once you buy the desktop version, you own it. Done deal.

None of the dollar amounts on their website, correspond to the price you posted.

I'm thinking maybe you have a virus??

QB Online is horrible....don't even think about trying it
Ran a maintenance/remediation/contracting firm with 18 full time employees on it from 2017-2019. Wouldn't hesitate to again, and that may happen sooner than later. We had a contracted person who handled it all..it was a single cost a month including QBO...based out of a town near manila with CPA level staff at a fraction of the cost.

I use Sage 50 for the accounting, absolute overkill for what I need now but am looking towards the needs growing as we expand. Bought a "perpetual" package years ago when we started and have upgraded once to accommodate Windoze.

For the MRP we use MiniMRP which was $199 a seat (again a one-time thing). More than adequate and was a breeze to learn after years of dealing with Made to Manage (Mangle).

They are dropping support for old desktop versions and basically stating that you can remain with a desktop version but you need an annual license.

Shintoo says they are eventually dropping that also and that would be painful.

I think you may be mistaken?

They are currently selling the DT version on their site, at the link I posted above.

What IS being discontinued this year is support for any add-on services.

You can read more about it here:

I don't see Anything about an annual license. Do you?

Quickbooks quits servicing older versions, the 2020 version is the most current version that they will no longer support. Basically you need to upgrade the desktop version about every 3 years if you run payroll or other government forms. If all you do is use it for writing checks and tracking your business finances, you can continue to use it indefinitely.

Quick books online is absolutely horrible.

We just dropped sage business works after 20 yrs for xero. Sage had too many steps for accounting and was costing me more for our accounting firm doing bi monthly reconciliations.

I’m going to look into a MiniMRP.

I run quick-books 2012, I have never let it take an update. Works flawlessly.
I only use it to make & process invoices, my bookkeeper does everything else.

I don’t know if desktop is being discontinued or not. That is what others have stated.

With respect to a license, maybe the better word is annual subscription. That is what i now have.

I use QB and I can say it has completely blown up the past 6 months. So many things are wrong and screwed up. Support is in India and they are 101% worthless. When they cant figure out a fix they put you on hold then they disconnect you.

My networth tracking is 40% off. I sold a Tbill and it said I had a $899 million dollar gain lol. It has completely destroyed the tracking of money (cash) flow in and out schwab money market. My one stock account with a single stock is off by 200%. Lol its showing a negative dollar amount close the the real positive dollar amount.

Id be better with excel. They have completely lost all control of the product

Are we trying to determination what you have? Or trying to help the OP?

🤔

QB only recently (as in version 2022) started using a subscription service for the desktop software.

He stated his version is a couple years old. If so, he should Not be getting any subscription messages!

He should probably contact Intuit to find out what HIS deal is.

Check out post 20 and the dates...

Completely agree with your point.

If one has an older version and it still works and doesn’t need to update that will do.

With respect for the OP asking for alternatives, I got nothing.

Sooner or later old versions don’t work which is why I had to unfortunately upgrade/downgrade to the subscription service.

The latest version of the MAC operating system wouldn’t work appropriately with my older version of desktop.

Planned obsolescence is a business model unfortunately.

Old versions will continue to work forever.

What they won't do is get Intuit updates forever!

Ya know how some people are still using Windows XP, even though it's no longer supported/updated?

Some people still even drive cars without airbags! And boats without 450 outboards! 😱

But they Will continue to work. 😉

I have 2014 and 2017, and they both work just fine.

Totally agree.

Unfortunately i have other software that requires OS updates to run that old versions of desktop will not work on so it is a conundrum/conflict.

I guess one could set up a separate system to run old OS and old software applications and just kluge around the problem.

That would certainly work.

Most all software is moving to subscription based. Microsoft Office, Adobe, Quickbooks, G Space, etc are have moved /are moving in that direction.

I was hoping someone here would try that new Oracle netsuite accounting system and file a favorable report. We switched one S Corp to QB online and I thought my gals where going to revolt. Three months later we retreated back to the desktop version. Multistate sales tax was laughable.
