New to the jet boat world, recently picked up a 2005 Cobra 23' Viper with an 8.1L Kodiak Vortec and a Dominator 12S, late model. I've worked on jets (aircraft) for over 15 years, so I'm fairly mechanically inclined. I could be completely wrong, but I dont feel like by boat is planing as quick as it should, nor is it going as fast as it should. Also, I'm burning gas like crazy. I know jets burn more gas, but this seems excessive. I probably burn 15-20 gallons going maybe 10 miles. Either way, I want to make sure its not due to any mechanical issues. I've changed the oil, replaced the spark plugs, and cleaned the air filter, all the basics. One of the fins on my intake housing is completely broken off and looking up through it I can see my inducer is pretty chewed up and from my research I'm thinking my impeller and/or wear ring might be toast as well. I say all that to ask this: is there anything crazy that I need to know prior to rebuilding my jet, at least down to the impeller? I'm not looking to pull my engine, so I just want to do everything I can to the jet while it is installed on the boat. Looks like I'll need a big impact socket for the impeller nut, but other than that, looks like it should be straight forward. Literally any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
