So after replacing the pilot on my waterheater yesterday, my dryer decides that it doesn't want to dry clothes anymore. I pulled it out and cleaned everything out, checked the gas and unplugged it, but still no heat.

It is Whirlpool bought from Sears in 2009. Nothing fancy.....just a standard dryer. Any ideas as to what may be wrong?

I really don't want to buy a new dryer. I would think that these should last at least 10 years.

Fuse on the heating element? (if it's an electric dryer). Search youtube for your model, good info there.

It's most likely the heating coil. It happened with my dryer. I picked up the part at a local shop, watched the instruction video on youtube and changed it myself.

I'm guessing your igniter broke. Do a google search on your model and se what others have to say. If it's the igniter it's an easy fix. Well at least it should be,,,

I wouldn't guess at it. I've used appliance repair forum (below) numerous times to successfully fix a dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave. This forum has former repair technicians to answer your questions and help guide you through troubleshooting and repair. Post your issue and a technician will respond. The idea is you buy the part from their site once you have identified root cause of your issue. Or get the part where you choose to.

Here is a link to the site. Good luck.

for gas driyers 3 things go bad.

your ignitor, the temp sensor and the gas solenoid. all are easy to check but you will need a multi meter to check the temp sensor. when you pull off the access panel there should be a wire diagram in a envelope attached inside. it should tell you what the resistance/voltage should be.

the ignitor and temp sensor are the most common.

X2 had the same issue. Looked on you tube and found the parts at a local appliance repair parts place and fixed myself for less than $30. I think any service call is ~$75 then parts and labor so close to ~$200 when done. Do it yourself, its easy.

I would start with your high heat limit temp sensor. It's in the exhaust leaving dryer. It usually fails due to excessive lint build up in the ducting. Of that is what's wrong replace your foil duct and swab out ur wall duct the best you can as well as clean out the dyer ducting.

I think the heating coil is for electric dryers??

I went and searched online and everywhere I looked there is good information on how to diagnose and fix the potenial problem. All of them involve a multi meter, which I don't have unfortunately.

LOL, I got like 8 of those for free from Harbor Frieght, broke 3 of them.:p

no way in hell I would get one of those, even if they paid me to take it. buy a decent one and be done with it.

I bought a fluke years ago, only issue I ever had was me forgetting to change the batterys. my dad was going thru about 5 of the horrible freight ones a year. he could have paid for the fluke several times over by now.

By the time I buy the multi meter, figure out what the problem is and then buy the part, I just spent my whole day running around. Forget that........called Steve at Grants and he is going to fix it for $100.00 while I enjoy a beer on my couch...[emoji1]

I replaced mine when I had issues a couple years back and it fixed the issue. About 6 months ago I had the same issue so I sold the older pair on CL and described the issue and bought a much newer pair on craigslist for $100 more all in.:D

:rolleyesEasy cowboy, for free they work just fine until they don't. If I needed one everyday then I'd reconsider.:)

Same thing went out on our Kenmore dryer a few years ago. Had a local appliance repair shop come out and repair within 15-30 minutes.

Was probably the solenoids or igniter. About a $30 fix. About anything else you could easily test by jumping sensors and see if it makes heat.

Next time you are at Harbor Freight pick up a Multimeter. You can get them for a couple bucks or free depending on sales/coupon.

If you have a boat you should have one anyway. You can make sure your new charger is working, test sensors, voltage and plug wires on the boat, etc.

My dryer problem ended up being the contacts in the timer. Only took me 2 days off and on to try and fix it. :smackhead

If you have the money, this is the fastest, easiest and sometimes the cheapest way to fix a dryer ^^^^

Time is money... $100 is worth having your day off

Thanks for the thread, it reminded me to clean my dryer vent. :smackhead. Before the temp sensor fouls :D

If not ignitor.....maybe thermocouple.....I think that's what it's called.....not to be confused with the kind on a water heater......

My gas dryer has a thermocouple....fuse.......on back side. Has 2 screws to mount it. Kind of looks like a pill or capsule with 2 prongs on the back. You can test it for continuity. Replace it for like 10 bucks I think.

If I remember right...you can start your dryer and look at the lil peep hole on the front.....you should be able to look in and see if your ignitor glows. If it does....obviously the ignitor is good. The peep hole is usually the lil square thingy with a logo on it that you can pop off one of the front corners of the dryer. I always wondered why those things were there until I had to do this. :D

He finished in about 30 mins, replaced 2 parts for $150.00. Good to go. Took a nape and on my 2nd beer now, waiting for my neighbor to get home with the Boostpower rigged 36 Speedster. Great day!

Did he tell you what it was?

Try running the dryer with the vent hose disconnected. Happened to me twice. The vent hose going up the wall out the roof was clogged. Removed the flapper at the roof and fished a wire down the vent into the laundry room. A ball of wet lint came out. Dryer worked fine once it could breath.
