Extended Service contract vs extended warranty

I know you guys here change vehicles like most people change their underwear , anyway , what’s the difference between a service vs warranty vs maintenance contract ? I see some contracts have more fine print than actual useable content . In the past they were just called extended warranties .

Don't know the answer, but I will throw this out for anyone not aware. We had a Gieco add on that I almost removed called MBI (Mechanical breakdown insurance). They automatically added it on our 19 Silverado since new. Well glad I kept it because it just saved us $2500 for an AC compressor that seized up. Truck is just out of warranty. Says you can add it on cars under 15k miles and is good for 7years or a 100K. Costs me $60 per year with a $250 deductible

Don't get me started on the trans issue I am dealing with . Truck already needs a torque convertor that's on national back order

You'd have to read Every word of the contract to know.

I've never seen an aftermarket warranty come close to what a factory warranty has to offer.

Always go factory extended warranty.

A service contract is Usually different in as much as it will cover Maintenance items. Warranty contracts Normally do not cover maintenance or wear items.

Once knew a guy who owned a large new car dealership in SD County. He told me those extended warranties were Cash Cows for him. He explained they were nothing more than a contract between the customer and an insurance company. He received immediate compensation from those insurance companies for bringing them those customers. Then he'd walk away. No liabilities or responsibilities what so ever. Plus he'd already made money on the sale of the vehicle. He said the $$ he made from those warranties on used car sales were also outstanding.

Service is just that, scheduled maintenance like oil changes, wipers etc.

Warranty means if something breaks, it gets fixed, there is usually a minor deductible to pay as well.

Always try to buy the extended factory warranty if you can, it's worth it, especially for Euro/High end Performance etc.

Had one on my 2011 Vee that was a $$$ saver. New rear-end and power steering pump replaced at the dealer no questions ask.

I have both on my 2017 F350 DRW.
Reason why

• extended warranty - truck has apx 21 computers. Electronic issues are not cheap fixes. I went 10 years and 150k mile (deductible is 250). Plus I plan on keeping the truck for 10-15 years.
• maintenance plan - i priced out regular maintenance (oil changes, fluids, etc) around Carlsbad (don’t have time to do it myself). After a quick ROI in 2018 it was break even, so I purchased it. With today costs, I am saving a ton of money

A warranty is part of the vehicles original cost. An extension or extended service contract is an insurance policy which cover failures, not to be confused with a maintenance contract. So technically to call it a Extended "warranty" even though many refer to it as such is wrong.

The maintenance plan only allows you to pre-pay for scheduled maintenance like oil changes, brake fluid flushes, etc that are spelled out in the contract. They don't stop you from using whomever you wish, it's your money wasted.

A WARRANTY contract will repair at the cost of your deductible anything that is spelled out in the contract, for all new vehicles there is a 3 year, 36 month bumper to bumper that covers basically everything that can break, but it DOES NOT INCLUDE WEAR ITEMS LIKE BRAKES, WIPERS or service like oil and fluid services.

If you choose to have your vehicle repaired at another facility while under the factory warranty, they will not "reimburse" you, since you did not give them the chance to satisfy the terms of the factory warranty (that only the dealer can provide services for). Your warranty is still intact however, you just fucked yourself by paying for something you could have gotten for free or at the cost of your deductible.

Aftermarket "extended" warranties are basically hit and miss, some are great, some suck dick.

Many slimy dealers will sell you aftermarket warranties and claim they are "Factory Extended Warranty" but they lie.....

Read the fine print VERY carefully. For instance if it's a Toyota or Lexus vehicle it will be issued by Toyota Motor Services and called "Toyota Vehicle Service Agreement" and comes in Platinum, Gold and Powertrain versions extending the factory warranty to 10yrs/125k, 8yrs 125k, and 6yrs 100k respectively.

Just read your fine print and don't hesitate to make the sales rep prove to you it's the real deal.

If you fail to service the vehicle properly however, and cannot produce receipts for scheduled maintenance that should have been performed if done by yourself or your chosen Indy shop, they can deny your warranty claims, because you failed to keep up the vehicle properly. Using the wrong weight of oil, cheap filters where they are called out for expensive fleese reinforced etc will certainly cause you issues if they ask you to produce records of proper maintenance.

You mean like when they say it covers all internally lubricated parts?
