Anyone ever built one? What size tubing and how big did you go?

Tried a nationally known sectional flag pole here in North TX and it failed miserably. Decided to build my own using old 2 7/8” diameter (thickness is ~ 1/4”) oil stem pipe painted silver, approx 25 feet tall using a single coupling. Sunk the pole 5’ in concrete and bought the truck and ball for the top on Amazon for $35. All total, I have about $45 into it. It easily flies two flags with ZERO movement.

any ideas on where to get high wind flags?

I've got a 30' redwood pole I cut out of my forest. The top pulley is seized and I can't change my flag now though,,,,,

I've got a piece of about 1 3/4" tubing 15' or so high in the front yard...fits into a receiver that's set in concrete. Works fine I guess, except the pulley hook or something up top broke a while back and I've not had a chance to fix it yet. Might do that today, now that this thread has reminded me.

I have had very good luck with these flagpoles and flags. Have several of the retractable poles at different locations with no issues.
‘I do lower them some when the wind is excessive.

I just finished installing a 28’ Telepole brand flagpole. I am happy with it. I was going to use a 21’ piece of 2.5“ pipe, then Build a receiver but I’m over spending the time and money to “build” shit that overall, costs less to buy. I just finished the turf area at the base since this pic was taken, and I’ll do some landscaping once warmer weather happens.

If you have an industrial metal supply nearby you can go buy whatever you want.

I use a "typhoon" flag currently and it has been the best in the wind so far. I also fly a 4x6 because I can and it can really flex my pole. So I may get a smaller flag for higher wind next time.

I’ve been looking at the ones from:

I had a 25’ sectional at my last house, at this house I’m going with either a 25’ or 30’ with a 4x6’ flag or 5x8’
