By many accounts he was a borderline douchebag in his offstage life. Like many others, he was wrapped up with Cathy Smith, the woman who OD'd John Belushi.

I started watching his documentary, went to bed expecting to finish watching it the next day, then I had to pay for it. I never got back to finishing it. I was surprised that he sang so deep with a high talking voice.

Early in his career he suffered an aneurysym after a fall, then recovered and went back to recording and performing then while on stage suffered a "Stroke" and never recovered to this day. :(

I enjoyed his documentary. My father enjoyed his music and by default I did too. He is one of the great storytellers.

We saw him in concert in Thousand Oaks quite a few years ago. It was a great show.

He had an abdominal aortic aneurism in September 2002.He took a couple of years to recover and has been out on tour doing 70-80 concerts a year ever since. in the u.s., canada and also a trip to the u.k. He stopped drinking in 1982. He had a mild TIA onstage shortly after getting back on tour in 2005. it affected his guitar playing but after a few months therapy he was back in form. his voice changed in the early 80's after he stopped drinking. His voice is that of a man who has truly lived the songs he has written of love, love lost and emotional trauma..

she was long out of his life when she and Belushi got together. He did, howerver help her with her legal bills.. She died last year. He had his moments offstage when he was drinking - out of the thousands of times he was offstage after a concert the 'borderline douchebag' times aren't worthy of a mention I'd think..

Sorry, if I mis represented the facts here. This morning "If You Could read My Mind" came on something, I thought would "Check" on him and the Info. that was posted there is what I quoted. Believe me, as I am NOT one to "Naational Enquirer" Shit. I have Admired him from the first time I heard him and am very sorry for stating details that were inacurate.

Agreed. A modern troubadour for sure. I admit when I opened the thread I assumed it was going to be an obit. Amazing how fast his tunes came flooding my brain. He was great at his art, no doubt.

Curiosity got the best of me while reading this thread so I looked him up on wiki.
I'm 60 and I've always thought of him as being old...even when I was in high school in the late 70's.
He's 82 now.
I think that guy's done some hard livin'.

dad sailed on the freighters on the great lakes for about 5 years, and on liberty ships ww 11, remember him telling me when he was on sheriffs dep marine patrol they had a 21 foot Lyman, said a state trooper was chatting with him one day and said , thats a big boat. Dad said he laughed and said on theses waters this things a peanut shell this was on lake Huron. told me it was not unusual to have waves go over the pilot house in great lakes storms So he could really appreciate this song.

My Mom saw him in Mesa a few years ago, he was playing the snowbird circuit. Said you could barely hear him, his voice was so soft. Must love playing for people, I'm sure he doesn't need the money.

Hate to say it but....
Because of this thread I thought I would poke around You Tube and listen to some "old" Gordon and as as expected, the singing was great (back in the 1970's and 80's)
Then, I made the mistake and listend to him in a recient 2020 song, I'm sorry but there is a time when professionals need to face facts and stop performing. This is in no way a diss on Gordon Lightfoot, His songs will alwas be rememberd and in his hay- day, his unique voice was mesmerizing let alone his guitar skills were above par. I heard/saw a recient song by Neil Diamond, again, back in the day, the guy was fantastic, but unfortunately, time takes its toll. With all that said, I am NOT a performer and maybe these professionals cant stop, its in their blood, thats why they were so good when they were on their game. It just comes down to the fact aging sucks.

Give this a spin...Gordon at his best:

Being a '70's guy, I'm a big fan. He was all over the radio back then as were many singer/song writers (Jim Croce, John Denver, etc.). This song got a lot of play and was always one of my favorites.

My folks used to live in Carefree, AZ and I'd drive down Carefree Highway (highway 74) to get to their place when I visited. Every time I did, this song would run through my head and I always wondered if Gordon Lightfoot knew there was a Carefree Highway in AZ (he's from Canada). Then one day I was listening to an interview of him on the radio and he talked about this song. He said he was in AZ and was driving up 17 and saw the sign for Carefree Highway and he thought that it would make a great song. So not only did he know there is a Carefree Highway in AZ, but it inspired the song.

I also always wondered if his name inspire one of my favorite '70's flick, the great "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot".

Gordon Lightfoot was great in his prime, liked listen to his songs in the 70's.
I'm missing Jerry Reed too. Love this song from Jerry, down to earth music
He got away with some words in his songs too,
hehe

Love this version of Early Morning Rain, written by Lightfoot, performed by Reed

Absolute genius. Also a character, the first time I ever met Jerry he started flirting with my wife, all in fun. I miss the the hell out of him and Chet.😢

I think Jerry, was good friends with Burt Reynolds. And possibly wrote the Soundtrack to Smokey and The Bandit.👍
