After reading through the “Worst Halftime Ever”thread this morning, I thought I would share my positive alternative yesterday. I had the pleasure of conducting the All Southern CA High School Honor Band, 102 of So Cal’s finest musicians. While there may be plenty of frustration where various genres of music are headed, just know that there are so many truly talented young musicians coming up. These amazing students are going to do great things in their lives, regardless of whether it’s in music or other fields. There is hope!

Wifie and I used to sometimes catch a High School or Ensemble orchestra on the DCA Hollywood studios temporary / permanent stage by the Fairfax Market.
Always appreciated the kids talents and dedication to take the time and effort to learn..

It would be way cool to see some of Americas youth highlighted. Or heck all of our military branches have phenomenal bands too!

Nice work Mr. Music To My Ears! I was probably never the caliber of musician your kids were but i played saxophone from 5th grade through highschool. In highschool I played in the jazz band and that was a blast. I miss it, however i hope to drop the music bug in my children's ear.

Warm Spring evenings a huge favorite with Asian Disneyland fans was the Glen Miller Orchestra with Peanuts Hucko.
Old school Disney.
I cut my teeth listening to the name big bands at the park in the 70’s - Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Louie Belson, Woody Herman, and Glenn Miller. That was such a great learning experience!

We love going to the schools concerts.
Maynard was a good Flute player. Flute because that was what he was assigned. So often that's how it works. Discipline and exercising his brain learning to coordinate and read music. Then the accomplishment from his personal work and the groups.

Really appreciated his teacher.
The kids seem to all love it.

When Ray Charles went to school he was assigned the Sax and would later bust out and play the sax at his concerts.
Eventually he got to the piano. More fitting because he sang so well.

Thank you! I love that you want to encourage your kids to explore music. Just being part of a team is such a valuable experience for young people. I have found that so many of the best students at schools are involved in music.

Yep, that’s how it usually works - whatever instrumentation the band director needs at the time. 😁

Most of my work is with professional musicians, but I have the utmost respect for music educators. It’s a labor of love for sure!

To me dancing is holding a woman close. Thats another thing that makes this music perfect.

Maynard is totally involved in our church and helps out at the Wedding receptions.
Tireless volunteer looks the part in a suit and tie.

Often an orchestra, even a chamber orchestra works well. Maynard with his mom's side of the family's good looks is a really good dancer and the girls love it.

I asked him once: “Do you like holding a girl close?”
Response: “They hold me close.”

Good things happen around good music.

Best thing I ever did as a kid was to immerse myself in music. In High School I had three periods of band and three regular courses, Jazz band, Concert band and Marching band. Marching band counted as PE.. High School was basically music school for me. It was pretty awesome to be in those drumlines. We played and traveled everywhere, I became real close to my teachers, it was awesome. I would encourage all parents to get their kids into music, especially piano. Because once you understand piano you understand music (IMO).. One of my music teachers forced every drummer to play another instrument, that was the only way you could play drums. I hated it, but I started playing trumpet and I taught me so much about music.

Very cool! I totally agree on starting with piano. I took 3 years starting in 2nd grade before starting trumpet. It really was a great basis to start.
I’m sure you’ve seen todays drum lines. Absolutely ridiculous what these high school kids are accomplishing!

Hi Kurt. I lost a good friend last year who was a good friend of Louie and Pearl, probably the best drummer I ever heard live, although not a real success. As for me playing guitar for around 60 years, the talent of the young players today is just multiples ahead of my generation, regardless of genre, although some need time to develop the musicality, they are just amazing. Hope you're enjoying retirement. Don.

Hey Don, great to hear from you. 60 years of playing is quite impressive! I hope all is well.
