Looking for the OMC gurus! Just picked this boat up. The boat is an 83 but from what I was told the engine was swapped in the past. The guy I bought it from doesn't know what year the engine is and it doesn't have the serial tag on the bracket. Trying to figure out what year it is and if it is infact a 225 ocean pro. Cowl was repainted so I dont trust the decals being right either. I took a bunch of pics of whatever numbers I could find on it.

Engine runs decent but carbs need rebuilding and I want to make sure I get the correct gasket kits. Any other info on these things would be greatly appreciated. Im new to OMC so im trying to learn before I dig into it.
Thanks Ryan

96-98 ish, mid bore carbs, 25 inch mid on a boat that needs a 20, along with the shark attacked skeg. Not a bad motor, but a lot of things need to be corrected.

How come when I look up the late 90s motors the look different. The cowl and carb covers are totally different. Everything I've tried looking up points me to 1992 and older. Is there any way to pinpoint a specific year from any of the numbers on the motor?

What do you mean by mid bore carbs? The skeg is on my to do list. As far as the mid length thats not gonna change any time soon. Gonna have to live with it for now.

one of the pics shows a freeze plug looking aluminum disc. thats not the original power head,,,RPH means replacement power head. that plug would have originally had the serial number stamped in it. I would put it late 80's. the serial number plate was riveted to the port clamp bracket, looks like it gone. the motor cover also looks late 80's, but Johnson did not build an OceanPro, thats Evinrude, Johnson's version was Oceanrunner. Identical other than the hood. I may recall more and I'll post.

Interesting🤔 I would assume based on the stamp 225 on the side of the power head that it is an actual 225. I figured late 80s just by how everything looks compared to all the pictures I've looked up. Seems like there isn't a good way to get an actual year then. Is this what is considered a looper?

I think the shape of the cowling indicates a pretty old engine.

In any case, OMCs from the nineties were by far the lowest quality outboard engines ever manufactured, and this one seems to have led a tough life as well.

Just sell it and buy something decent. There are still some OMC fans around who buy those things.

I would have to agree. There should be a model and serial tag on the clamp port side. I have a 83 235hp. That is definitely different carbs, exhaust, heads etc. However it is a 20" and has a good lower. It is my understanding the mid and lower will work for the op. I don't want much for it but it would be what the op needs

Hey, I've got one of those ^^^ too! 🤣

A good old Johnson 235! It's just hanging on an engine stand with nowhere to go. 🤷

It's an 86 or 87 200 or 225. I know that by cross reference to the powerpack number. Those motors were the 2.7 ltr. engines and in my and many people's opinions were some of the best engine they made in the looper design. If that motor still has the original 2.7 l cylinder heads they could be worth some money they are the heads everybody is looking for.

Is there a way to identify which heads are on a motor without pulling the heads on the older Johnson's and OMC's?

Mercury got the quality to a decent place. I also have a faint memory that they started to introduce some Mercury designs into the former Chrysler range before shutting Force down.
