Palomar just sent me this email! My current solar system maxed out my old 100 amp Bulldog Pushmatic Panel. If I decided to add a few more solar panels and get a 200 amp electrical panel installed at the same time. Would the cost of the electrical panel also qualify for the 30% fed tax credit? I have an email into Palomar and will update this post when they get back to me. Yes, I know Pushmatic is crap!!!! @BasilHayden

Do you already have solar on your home but wish you had more panels because your electric bill keeps increasing?

In the past, the most you could add was 1KW (which is only 1 to 3 solar panels) without kicking you into a worse utility agreement.

Did you add an electric vehicle, air conditioning, a pool? Or are you simply just using more electricity than before and shocked again with your new electric bill? We now have a solution for those who may not have bought a large enough system to begin with.

It was just announced that a new non-export system can be added to an existing solar system. This means if you are a NEM1 or NEM2 customer and you'd like to take advantage of additional roof space to further reduce your electric bill, we now have a real solution for you.

Best of all...it qualifies for another 30% federal tax credit. Our goal from day one has been to help folks make great solar decisions whether they choose us or not. I guarantee a professional, no pressure consultation will not be a waste of your time.

You need to be at least a year out from last install.

Add-on's are one of the single best ways to get additional capacity at often a killer price because the infrastructure is there... With some of the new rules allowing separate non-export systems it sweetens the deal bc it isn't ruining your original NEM agreement.

This link will be of interest to you.

See section about 25 C at this link regarding panel on non solar (heat pump support etc) Always speak with a tax professional.

Thanks for the info. My system was put in 2017 so all good. Checking out the links now. I can only add 1 panel to stay below the 10% of my system to keep NEM 1.0 and have the new panel count for my production.

Guess I found my answer!

The cost to upgrade the main electrical panel does not qualify for the solar tax credit. It doesn't matter if "upgrading the panel is necessary to install the solar" because there is no such thing as an "if you need it for solar, it qualifies for the tax credit" test.

However, if the main electrical panel is upgraded in conjunction with a qualified energy efficiency improvement or a qualified energy property, then it can qualify for a tax credit because of 26 USC Section 25C(d)(2)(D). HOWEVER, solar panels are not a qualified energy efficiency improvement or a qualified energy property.

Put simply, the solar tax credit is under 26 USC Section 25D and no language in that law allows for the tax credit to apply to electrical panel upgrades.

Conversely, the energy efficient home improvement credit law in 26 USC Section 25C does allow electrical panel upgrades to qualify for a different tax credit, but only if installed in conjunction with the upgrades specified in that law, which do not include solar.

Anyone who says that an electrical panel upgrade qualifies for the 30% solar tax credit if the electrical panel is installed with solar is confusing 26 USC Section 25C with 26 USC Section 25D.

Sorry guys been out of touch. Was racing at Barber Motorsports in Alabama, what an amazing place.
This is a program that will allow those who have significantly undersized systems catch up without losing their NEM1 or 2 status. It is a bit complicated and definately not for everyone but for some it will be a game changer. Effectively your existing system stays as is and can backfeed to the grid, we then build a stand alone second system and it CAN NOT backfeed to the grid but it can provide all the power you require to the house during the day, effectively allowing the existing system to back feed and create credits for overnight use. It will require more electric work than the standard system, more akin to a battery set up but it allows for the 4-5 year paybacks that we used to have and allows those who undersized or grew out of a previous system to catch back up.
I recommend you move on this as I dont expect it to last for long
