You go to CHP to and sign up. You have to pay them/sign up for the BIT program at same time. Have your shit in order tho. They will want to inspect your truck before you receive your #. Next year this will all be paid thru the motor carrier permit devision of the DMV.

Thank you for the link. How long does it normally take to get one?

got mine in about an hour, but that was 13 years ago:D:D. I honestly couldn't answer that. I know they want to inspect the trucks now before you are assigned the #, this requires and appt from the BIT inspector.

If your GVW is below I think 26k you don't need bit program, it might be 33k+.

Negative. If you're 26K truck has air brakes you're in bit.

If you're dually tows a trailer that will put you at or over 15k, both the truck and trailer are in bit. If you have another truck that "can" tow said trailer, that truck is also in bit.

Unless said trailer is designed such that it cannot be loaded to weight more than 15K. Like a tool trailer or whatever.

Want to talk DOT now? :skull:skull

I have never had to deal with the BIT program. I used to have annual inspections done at Fleet Services in Anaheim but since that location closed I have not done it.

We dont tow anything over 15K fortunately.

I got my CHP CA numbers from the office in Orange. Walked in, filled out the paperwork, they inspected nothing, and I had the number in the mail in a couple days. There was no cost at that time. I dont know about now.

Your under 26K so your fine on a reg DL. You can place "not for hire" on the side if you want. Really makes no difference. You CANNOT exceed 26K combined total on your regular drivers license (truck and trailer) even in non commercial use. If your over that or the trailer your pulling has a GVWR of greater then 15K (5th wheel not bumper pull) your going to need a non commercial class C. There are ways around this if you pulling your load with an RV. Then you can drive a 40k coach but you still have to abide by the max trailer weight laws or have a non commercial CDL.

Holy Moly just went through all this.

And....dont blow the scales. Your CA number is what gets entered as you roll through the scale house. Make sure you buy the TOTAL weight on your registration. Being over is super freaking expensive and they get real grumpy about it. These are the number stickers you see on the doors. Ask me how I know.

Your towed weights will also need to be under your towed vehicle's axle capacity. You can be under GVW but over on an axle very easy. All this applies even for private use. You will need an MCP in CA (Motor Carrier Permit) and that refrences and is controlled by your CA numbers. FOr you it's $35 a year and fairly painless unless your stopped with one expired. Then the CHP can stop you from driving the rig right then and there.

Thanks for all the good info. I was able to fill out the application and fax it to the office in San Bernardino this past Friday. Called them on Monday to make sure it showed up with no problem. Yesterday I got home from work and in the mail there was a letter that had my CA # in it. I didn't think that 3 business day turn around was bad. If you guys don't mind, can someone put up a picture of what and where they are supposed to go? Just want to make sure that I get it right. Thanks again for the info.

CA # and company name? I thought it was just the CA #.

big trucks you gotta have a name as well. Reading this thread there are several differences between your size truck and mine. Just throwing out what I have to follow:thumbsup

I put mine on the dump body, I get away with it because its permanently attached. I have only had one DOT guy give me problems with it, he insisted it b on the door. His partner then told him it was fine where it was:D:D
