Anybody install Linux and also use Xp?
If so, how did the install and subsequent use of both operating systems go?

Thx in advance

VMWare is the way to go... I use all flavors (ESX, Workstation and server) and they are great products. I have found that using Linux as the primary OS than Windows as the hosted OS seems to work best. Get some RAM - www.newegg.com.

Also - unless you want to go through the pain why mess with it... I use linux to update a few drivers and scripts on our imaging servers - besides that it's not my bag of potatoes... Then again I use a new mac to manage 6000 or so windows workstations that all connect to netware (yes, it's still fricken around - not for long though).

Thx guys - I'm installing on an older laptop with 1gb RAM - maxed out.

I was told to research Ubuntu for Linux - how does VMWare fit into the picture? Virtual partition management?

The machine already has Windows XP on it (I will still need to run apps from it too), there's already a Fat32 separate partion.

What are you looking to do? VMWare is basically a program that allows you to have computers saved onto other computers as a file... Kind of a confusing thought if you don't work with it. Say I have 1 computer with XP or Vista on it (or 7 like this one). With VMWare workstation (or their freebies) I can boot up windows, then open VMWare and launch my other OS of choice. This is cool, but if your computer is all ready messed up in some way that will also cause the computer in VMWare to be slower...

You could dual boot to have seperate OS's installed, but your in geek world then... Why are you looking to run more than one OS? Fixing XP or Vista may make life easy :beer

Evil stuff that requires Linux :) :skull:skull:skull

I was reading about the dual boot option...seems like a good option?

Single laptop only.

Linux...so it's like the oldschool DOS command days? Good times....single line commands and whopping 40MB drives, all inside a supersmall, suitcase sized shell :beer

Dang, today I received one of the mini-notebooks, an Asus 10" - fuggin thing is so kewl. Pull it out, put in thw WEP code and up and running :). Not going to use it for Linux though.

If you have the resources i'd try running the beryl shell on your linux distro. it has the most amazing visual enhancements of any operating system. cool stuff.
