They started accepting applications this week for anyone else trying to get a head start on putting together the 1/2 dozen documents and fees required for the year.
What are they requiring this year?

Same as always… proof you store your boat 25 miles from wahweep/bullfrog and you have to answer 1/2 a dozen questions about quaggas…

I'm going by the spirit of the law on this one.

Goal of the program is to not spread mussles. I AM a local boater, store in Page and never launch on another body of water.

Here is what I do to still take advantage of the "Local Boater Program." While driving up the ramp I'm draining just as I should, I empty all water tanks and when approached by the red tape environmentalist I say, "I'm launching tomorrow." And then I go park it in my storage in Page where it "drains and dries" for 2-3 weeks until I launch again, in POWELL!

I used to do the program but got tired of the paperwork and fees for something that proves nothing as it's all still on the honor system anyways.

I agree and I don’t know that it does much at the end of the day, but just for those interested it is free without any fees. You do have to fill out an online form and upload your “proof” which takes effort.

I normally get waved through both entering and exiting so that I don’t even have to stop and talk to the red tape environmentalist…

I mainly do it so that I can embellish the advantages and just make the people without it upset that they don’t have the sticker!

We are excited about bringing the boat back to Powell this summer! We will be in and out of storage in Page from July to Sept, then back to Havasu. I might be on bad boy list, but I don't think I am gonna bother with all the stuff I have done in the past few years (certs, stickers). I did the Utah non resident stuff last couple years and when I shared it at the ramp, nobody gave a shit.

When putting boat back on trailer, my story will be... it is stored here in town or we are launching again tomorrow (both have good chances of being true). Or just wait till after 7PM when they go home (I saw that being the case last year at Wahweap, the ramp was busy as soon as they closed the inspection lane).

It only took me 2 try’s to get the answers right, but I got accepted!

1) no more waiting in line to launch, I get to go straight to the front.
2) access the the special slips at the dock when all the others are full
3) free ice from the secret dangling rope that’s not at dangling rope but the locals know where.
4) 1/2 price ethanol free 91 at the pilot at state line.

So, I made the attempt.

They won't let me in the club. They apparently have "conditions and requirements" that I am not able meet.

I did answer all the questions right, so they told me I could still get free ice from the secret dangling rope that’s not at dangling rope but the locals know where.

1 day approval this year. Feel like it took several days for response last couple seasons. 2 weeks 'till first soak. Unless wind is blowing 40mph.

It has been windy this week… but pretty typical for April. We plan on our first splash sometime around May 8-14, or on/off a couple times that week when the weather is good.

Going to Powell for a houseboat trip at the end of this month. I took the online test and purchased the out of state AIS sticker. Is there more that I have to do?

That’s all you need in advance, but you might look at the entrance fees per vehicle and per boat. You can buy an America the Beautiful annual pass to all the national parks for $80. You still have to get a boat pass based on the length, so everyone situation is different.

Ok. I have the national park pass. Will have to pay for the boat but I expected that. Am I correct in assuming there is no inspection to launch on Powell since they already have mussels? The boat is coming from and will be going back to lake mead afterwards

You may get inspected, it’s pretty random. But just drop your drive all the way down before you leave mead and let it dry and drain for a day. Also remove plug, clean and dry your bilge. It’s not a big deal…. Worst case, they send you through the decontamination station. Don’t use common sense, i.e. Powell supplies mead so it’s all full of quaggas already.

It’s a wake boat. “Complicated” as they call it. Not really looking forward to some government working trying to decontaminate my boat.

I am sure you will probably fly right on through. I am not the best person to advise because the last time I was inspected was probably over 10 years ago and now I fly the local boater sticker.

Ive not seen or heard of anyone getting inspected on way in. Only on way out. Sometimes there's a line of wake boats waiting at the dunk tank. Other times tank isn't open and people appear to be leaving with only the typical visual inspection. I've also never heard of anyone being hassled over the AIS sticker.

Where do you plan to launch from?

Typically, upon arrival you will be asked how long ago, when and where the boat was in the water last? And how many days do you plan to be on lake?

I have not encountered issues when getting off the water, inspection is what people make of it. Pull the plug, they will ask where you are going next with the boat, and may board to see a dry ski locker and check anchor line(s). They give you a doc sayin you passed, put a clip on the bow of da boat and you good to go. 👍 I have also, gotten off the water after the inspection station closes and just drive past.

I have done the AIS stuff in the past too and if you are at Wahweap or Antelope Point, they don't even care (its a Utah thing). Stateline seems to be where that may be requested. But good job for doing it anyway.

Boat fees are $30 for 1-7 days and an annual pass is $50. Fees could be higher for a boat over 26' (I think my sticker actually says 26 and under on it). 🤔

Have a great trip and post up, I always enjoy your destinations.

i think most of the boats getting dunked are utah boats. They are pretty strict about what gets through. For Arizona i dont think they care much.

I think they will wanna see a sea strainer baskets and pulled plugs. Maybe a ski locker, i have never been asked if they could board my boat. It can happen i suppose.

If you choose to show all you stuff to them, they will ask to see anchors, lines/ropes, fenders, sea strainer, and a pulled plug. You may have to kick on your ballast tank pumps to being a wake boat. If you have that stuff easily accessible to show them or do and not waist their time they wont waste yours.

Personally i store all my stuff that touches the water on my houseboat. 😉

What about the local aviator sticker? Rumor on the docks is they're coming for the planes next. After a thorough government investigation on how quagga mussels entered into lake Powell, the cause is still undetermined. Since it is well known the park and states did their due diligence to prevent it from happening by boat. So now they are going to inspect aircraft with the understanding the planes transfered the quaggas to the clouds and the clouds rained on the lake. 🤣

This week the quagga have frozen off all the planes! Past few days it’s been cold and rainy…. Forecast calls for 80s by the weekend and that would call for a quick splash and an over night or two!

i have been inspected on the way in. I was given an inspection pass at the ranger station and told good to go, and then some wacko NPS nazi stopped me at the ramp and made a huge scene. made me go to boat detox.

no consistency with NPS.

Interesting. We had a 13yr hiatus from Powell and started back up 2yrs ago. Before our break they'd check for porta potties if overnighting and in early 2000's sound checks. I never got checked even with an 871 sticking through hatch surging through wakeless zone. Clamp on mufflers clearly visible so I guess they figured I was trying while buddy with stock 502mpi would get stopped every time. He swears it was so cops could check out his wife's new bolt ons. Had a "Safety Check" while launching last summer. Dude asked for the usual equipment and never asked about toilet. Not had any issues over mussels but have a Local Boater sticker.

seems in the last few years, basically since the muscle has been found in the lake, they have backed way off on the inspections.

but 10 years ago, yeah, being NV registered with primary use at Mead, i had to go to their detox platform every trip, and they were at the ramp every morning checking.

Is a toilet required? What are those options? “Bumper Dumper”. We picked up our boat at Powell but never was asked anything. If we go back i want to be prepared. 👍

Unless you are camping within 200 yards of a toilet you are required to to pack it in and pack it out…. So a portable potty or doodie bags and a bucket etc…

A Porta Potty of some sort is required. They used to check randomly at ramp and roll up on our beach camps to check when we all had small boats. That stopped when there'd be a cabin cruiser or house boat in the mix. We haven't been checked last 2 summers at all but go farther up and away from the popular spots now.

With the amount of traffic and how quickly a beach is vacated and repopulated… I still have a tiny bit of faith in humanity, in that I haven’t come across the complete asshole move of leaving human waste behind in the most magical boating destination on the planet…. And I hike all over every beach camp I stay at.
