Looking for a vehicle in the Section 179 weight class. Sequoia TRD Pros look good and come in a hybrid now. This would likely sit in the stable next to a 2021 F350 and high horse sedan (CT5-V has been on order for 16 months).

It's just the wife, me, and pets. So a 4Runner would probably do but it's not getting the same facelift as the Sequoia until late 2024 and the 179 amount is being phased out more every year.

My minimal understanding of Toyota people is that they are most crazy about the Tacomas and 4Runners. So those hold their value very well.

Will the used Sequoias demand the same Toyota fanatic pricing 5-10 years from now? I ask because the Sequoias are expensive and I don't want to take a Euro brand level depreciation hit, if possible.

Also any experience with Sequoias or other Toyota trucks and SUVs?

What’s a section 179 weight class? The old big Toyota’s hold value well. Go price an old Land Cruiser

Saw one in Parker a couple weeks ago, it was a gem! Driver told me she had been waiting for several long months for it to show up.

Meanwhile, I am still extremely happy with my Tundra. 100k highway miles.

In Hawaii a couple months ago, I joked at saying "if I had a dollar for every Tacoma we saw... our dinner and drinks would have been paid for!" No shit, they were all over the islands!

If you want to retain value and keep it Toyota the only answer is to buy a 200 series land cruiser. Its the last of the Land Cruiser heritage to be imported to the US and it will hold value far in excess that of a Sequoia. Likely more expensive though....

I saw a new TRD pro Sequoia in white on the 15 the other day. One sexy mfer, thats for sure.

I am not well versed in all the newer Toyota stuff, but its not really a Hybrid if its anything like the Tundra. The "hybrid" part of the tundra just increases torque, its an electric assist. Just a gimmick IMO.

I don't think it will hold value long term like the 4 runner and tacoma 10 years down the line but they look pretty dam cool. I imagine they are blazing hot and hard to get right now just like the Tundras.

I can't believe the msrp on the latest landcruisers. One of my clients bought one in 2019 and it was like 115k....crazy

H means IRS rule 179 for accelerated deprecation, which I believe is GVRW at 6050 pounds and above.

We had an '03 Sequoia and loved it.
At 109K we started to get check engine and traction control lights on. We went round and round with the dealership. First repair was $800 and the check engine light came back on as we drove it home. Then it was $2000 only to have the check engine light come back on again as we drove it home. Third time was to the cost of $4000 which is where I got Toyota Corp involved. Corp ended up covering the 3rd repair bill--and yes the check engine light came back on in less than 30 days. Then we learned what was actually causing the error--catalytic convertor. Sequoia's run two cats and one side was failing putting up a check engine light.
The problem the check engine light causes throws other systems into fault--the trac control being one of them. I believe this is what caused us to lose control as we were driving home from a X-mas vacation in Denver. We were in Gallup NM and the backend just walked away from us at 25-30mph while in snow. It was like the front wheels hit the brakes while nothing happened in the rear. Truck spun the rear to the right and we slide down the side of the highway causing the truck to roll on the side. Car never turned off and no airbags deployed. Kids hanging sideways in car seats. The truck behind us stopped and the guys climbed up the bottom of the truck and opened the rear door and jumped in--getting all 3 kids out even before my wife and I could unbuckle. We ended up opening up the sunroof and stepping out that way. When the tow truck right sided the truck--it started again with no problem. Ended up leaving that truck in Gallup NM where insurance totaled out the truck.
I would not hesitate to get another Sequoia again.

For the OP original question--I think the Tacoma and 4Runner will hold a higher % of their original value. Sequoia will still retain a higher than industry average but just not as well as the other two.
We really liked the size of it being bigger than the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade and smaller than the XL's. I did not like how much engine noise came through into the cabin but im sure that has been addressed.

Apparently they get a list of all units coming in 2x per month. And there are other people ahead of us that also put a deposit down.

We ordered a silver platnum 4x4

Wife and I have been looking at the Sequoia as well. Currently she drives a 4Runner and loves it, but it is a bit dated being a 2012. We have never had an issue with the 4Runner outside if the stereo going out from time to time.
What we really like about the sequoia is: 583ft/lb of torque and 9k towing capacity. The new design is very good looking. They finally got the interior up to date. Toyota reliability???
What we don't care for is: Sequoia looks a bit too much like a big Rav 4. BIG jump in price with the Platinum model MSRP coming in at $80k. First year production...Unknow issues or reliability of the iForce Max powertrain. Rear cargo space is pretty limited.

On paper, the vehicle will easily tow our boat so it would be nice to have that ability rather than always towing with my truck.

Mom and step dad have an 08. Bought it brand new and it has 260k now and has been flawless. Pulled boats, travel trailers and never missed a beat. Its for sale now as they just bought a new Tundra

Does anyone on RDP have a connect with Toyota?

We are looking for a Sequoia Capstone 4WD

Local dealership here does not want to mess with an out of state sale (buy in NV but register in OR) so we are looking for other dealerships that would or in OR already.
Local dealership here in NV is putting a 10K markup and OR dealership is $5K

Cadillac is putting $10-15K on Escalades ($50K on V's)
GMC wont tell me markup's cause they have nothing on lot and nothing coming in not sold.

$5k is a steal.

I called CA, AZ, and TX dealerships.

All had $15k market adjustments.

My wife decided that she didn't want a $100k Sequoia.

So she picked out something different without a market adjustment and we'll probably be $120k out the door... thank god she makes most of the money 😁

Capstone with options we want was only $86K
$15K markup is crazy to pay IMO--but supply and demand comes in to play.
We can fly anywhere and drive it back but found a lot of Dearerships are giving residents in their county first right before selling out of state.

Coming out of an Escalade so 17/19mpg would be a sizable improvement. .

Regarding Secion 179, keep in mind that different trim levels of the same model may or may not be eligible.

Take the previous-generation Lexus RX as an example.

The regular models were slightly under 6000 lbs GVWR and ineligible.

But hybrid models were much heavier, exceeding 6000 lbs GVWR and they were eligible.

So it pays to look at the door placard, or lookup the GVWR of the exact trim level you’re interested in, for vehicles that are close to 6000 lbs GVWR.

Also keep in mind that carmakers know all about this, and many vehicles “just barely” make the cut and that’s absolutely by design.

It’s a big reason why large SUVs are so popular with both buyers and carmakers.

Reviews on new Sequoia are only okay, be careful paying over MSRP as car sales are tanking and rebates are starting. Best of luck finding what you want.

Did you get your new ride yet? Haven't even been able to find one at a dealer near by so we can actually put hands on it and sit in it... I told my wife that we will probably either have to order one, or just wait a year for the huge market rush to fade a little....

Landcruiser in name only. A total disappointment from anyone that appreciates or values what a true Landcruiser is.

Yep, they shelved it, then decided to bring it back in the 250 series.

I'm still unsure how this fits in with the new 4Runner coming. I do wish they would have just brought the 300 series.

You can still get the lx600 which is a true Land Cruiser 300 series

Yep, agree. The new Lexus GX (same platform as Land Bruiser) looks great.

That looks good. I think they got the sizing right and i think the hybrid 4cyl will make alot of overlanders happy because of the decent power and good mpg.

I will be interested to see what they do with the 4runner. I imagine they will price it 5-8k less but they do seem a tad similar in size.

Yea. It is weird they have been so quiet on the 4Runner. The pricing is so out of whack on them for essentially a 13 year old body, on a 20 year old chassis :) It is unreal that the top line version is mid $50s... that's like double what I paid for mine.

IOsnt the new tacoma specs out and getting ready to come out? 4runner will be the same and follow a year or two later. (no idea on the looks)

I think they are all getting the hybrid 4cyl deal. like 320 hp 460 tq.

Yea it will be based off the Taco. It’s just weird we’ve seen 0.. the assumption has been it will be 2024 for the new 4runner. The current one keeps selling better and better.. 2021 was the best sales year ever for 4Runner.
