I have an old monster Teledyne Laars ES2-400, Input 400k btu / Output 280 btu pool heater to go with my inground pool and spa in Brea. Want a new pool heater but dont mind a slightly used one. Once or twice a year. Wife likes to heat the pool for the kids but personally, I could care less. Thus, it is how fast can I heat the spa kind of heater. Looking for options. Do I need to get another 400k heater (and yes I know they are more efficient) or can I downgrade? Also, anyone have an OC connection that I can bounce my questions off of>

Thanks,

Brendan

I don't have any used. We toss em. If it's an old heater, likely old gas line. Your heater size will be determined now off of existing line size. Generally you need 1.5inch main supply line for 400k to operate correctly. A 400k heater will typically heat at 1 deg per minute on a normal spa. 250k will be closer to 1 deg per 2-2.5 minutes. Basically size you need will be determined off of existing line, and expected heating rate.

PM me or text 9098437172 Tim. I can hook you up with one of my guys to do on the side if needed. Would likely be a weekend or evening deal.

Ya, that's the norm for most guys. What's it doing or not doing.
What heater, make, size, age?

I was in norco earlier today, reviewing a litigation nightmare job, for Mr Ward the original Robyn from Batman - Adam West days. pretty crazy pool :yikes

Burt started a post production company called " boy wonder".

His business motto was " we never charge for changes" which in the effects business is an open door to eternal anal rape.

Between a ludicrous model and being hopelessly underfunded he folded quickly.

Here's a pic.....Hayward H350 it looks like. Came with the house when we bought it in 2005.....I think the equipment may he been kinda new. It's been out of service for a couple of seasons......but it started by intermittently not firing back up after it would bring the jacuzzi up to temp. Sometimes it would fire, sometimes not. Then eventually it just stopped firing completely. So now when you switch it on, you can hear it make a click, but fail to ignite. At one point I took it apart, cleaned the ignitor, peeked at some stuff online, but that's as far as I got.

Haywards on older models were notorious for bad boards, bad ignition controls etc. and of course unlike other manufactures they're Hayward specific. Topper they changed every few years making it a bigger PITA to get what you actually need.
Your best bet would be to call Jose or Cesar 9098966016, they are Hayward warranty guys, but also do repairs.
They know their shit and usually have parts in Van/truck to actually fix same visit. Tell him Tim w SoCal pools gave you number, so he can pretend he no longer understands English for you. LOL
If you weren't in a hurry, I can prob put you on sch myself for Feb March next year :yikes

Not sure about his current businesses, but judging by this pool alone, less than 7 years old. He's doing something right! It's a monster for a residential, my repairs/fixes alone will be in excess of 200k range. Orig build cost should have been 2.5-3x's that. Rock work 10+ ft tall over 100ft long, 2 grottos, 3 slides, 2 wet bars, lazy river pretty close to 300 ft. Iv done a bit of work for actors over the years, granted most have been more " current actors " but he is just a nice down to earth happy guy. Cool dude for sure!

Resurrecting the dead. Bought a used heater (i know, taking my licks now) and it just stopped working. It is a Pentair Master Temp 400. Board worked (cycled through startup functions) but could not get the heater on off button to work. I tried to jump the heater via a flathead screwdriver at the 6 pin connector but that did not work either. Bought a new board on Amazon (42002-0007S ) and all the connectors are the same minus a jumper for the individual pool or spa controller.

Plugged it all in and control board light comes on (all functions light up for a short second, the temp then shows, "R14" displays and control board shuts off. I can press the yellow reset button on the back of the board and actually cycle through the "spa" and "pool" functions, while the temp shows. However, cannot adjust temp and heater never comes on.

Any suggestions?

Funny this just came up. The pool heater died a week ago. It was a rheem, very old. Home warranty isn’t covering it since there was suppose to be a check valve installed from the salt cell and they determined it was chemical damage. They want $2900 to install a pentair 400 master temp. Still waiting on the pool guy to answer. So will be seeing what this thread recommends! Almost got a used one, but decided to get a new one.

The thing about pool heaters is the more you use them the longer they last, it's kind of weird. I've used mine 1-5 times a week for almost 20 years without even a hiccup. I've seen them go bad in just a few years without usage.

I got to say, that actually is not an uncommon problem. Many things don't just sit well.

Since I haven't really looked at Pool heaters much at all, maybe someone can help me.out if I'm wrong, but aren't they essentially just boilers? If so, I'd suggest looking into a Lochinvar boiler. We have many of them on facilities we service and they have been the most reliable and easiest to work on. They have condensing boilers as well that are a good bit more money but if used frequently enough, may be worth it.

Just looked them up and it appears Lochinvar makes pool heaters as well (looks just about the exact same components are their commercial boilers also).

I just put in a Pentair Sta-rite 400BTU.

I could of probably done it myself and saved some install money.
But when they say it can be done today and in before family gets here later you just do it.

Melloyellowvector is redoing my pool right now, so you can have my old heater if you want it. It's in pretty good shape. I'm in Yorba Linda.

Pool man is installing the pentair master temp 400 next week. $2700 installed plus mail in gas rebate will bring it down to $2400. Yikes still!
