Need your help with a Pool Sweeper hose issue...

I'm running a Poolvergnuegen pool sweeper - works great (pic below).

The hose goes in through the skimmer flap and after a 90 degree bend plugs into the port in the bottom of the skimmer basket area like this:

I'm using section hoses (not one long hose) and lately the hose has crimped at the bend which keeps the sweeper from working while running the pump with reduced water flow.

I was thinking a PVC elbow/pipe in the skimmer would allow me to connect the hose straight in without bending/crimping. So I looked for that and ended up finding a Skimmer Vac Plate that goes over the basket allowing the basket to stay in the skimmer using the skimmer basket instead of just the basket at the pump. Anyone using these? Good? Bad?

Continuing to Google I found these things - Automatic Skimmer Plate
https://www.aquapoolstore.com/cleaners/Hayward-skimmer-vac-plate.htm

It sounds great but is it worthwhile?
Found it on Ebay for $23 less than Amazon (using Wikibuy)

The skimmer plate is a temp solution won't stays in place when teh pump shuts off and turns back on.

Can you show me the kink? sounds like you can just change or take a section out ?

Dave

hint - to make your suction side skimmer work better cut a hole in the basket and thread the hose through.
This way the basket catches anything that the might otherwise go straight through.

The hose bends 90 degrees and crimps almost closed reducing flow dramatically.

It's a thin wall white sectional hose (Amazon) and I think the suction and/or thin wall of the hose is causing this.

buy an OEM hose section from a pool store or online- Ive never had one collapse even with 2 HP.

Hose collapse causes performance loss even in mild conditions.

I have a few extra 5' sections you can have if you are close to Upland. BTW, that is the pool sweep I also have. It works great!

Thanks guys! I'm in PHX so I'll see what other options I have.

I noticed that the flapper door on the skimmer is probably pressing somewhat on the hose helping it kink. But it's the thin cheap hose that's likely the issue. Need a heavier gauge starter section

a door wier like that is just free floating and shouldn't remotely be able to bother the hose - sounds like some seriously chintzy (weatherbeaten?) hose.

I was happy with the poolvergnugen (the pool cleaner) but like the MX8 better.

The hose works fine except for whatever section I have plugged into the hose port at the bottom of the Skimmer. It was cheap and it works but it's thin-shit gauge plastic that collapses too easily when bending the 90 degrees into the bottom of the Skimmer

Yes they both work. First one as Dave said will pop up when pump turns off. How ever you can also throw in a locking bar across the top to prevent that.

The second one posted is a more expensive unit but it will let you skim and vac at same time or other units as pump cycles will alternate between skim and vac

So yes they work, yes leaves will collect in skimmer basket instead of pump. Skimmer baskets are usually considerably less then pump baskets when they fail. Large debris isn’t going through underground plumbing causing blockages etc.. there are benefits to running a vac plate.

Most of the time when I see crimped hose it means you have to much suction. So many pool owners that take care of there pools max out the cleaner to make it move fast thinking its cleaning the pool best but what your really doing is wearing out your cleaner way to fast. This can also cause pump damage, excessive electrical costs, etc... Get a stop watch and in a minute the wheel rotation should be 11-13 times. I set at a max 12. The Poolvergnuegen suction side cleaner is IMO best on the market. If you set it up right it will perform well and last long. Also make sure your hose length is right for your pool thats also key. I also noticed in your pic it looks like your not using the factory cleaner hose, I would suggest using poolvergnuegen hose. Your biggest problem really is you have a single port skimmer. If its got a twist lock diverter it can be moving around while the cleaner is moving in different sections of the pool creating less and more suction. I'd use a vac plate. If you ever re plumb your pool, not only change out the skimmer to a 2 port, but plumb in a designated vac line. Good luck hope this helps.

Look for "tigerflex" Its used in industrial apps on vaccum lines. Very flrxable. Will not kink. Every size you can imagine. Buy it by the foot.
Or, try your local carpet cleaner guys. At the very least they could tell you where they get their hoses. Cheaper than a pool supply.

Thanks! Sorry for any confusion but none of the pics are from my pool or equipment - they're all online.

I think there may be too much suction - how do I turn it down? As for the hose, it's a cheap, white thin wall sectional hose that came with the Poolvergnuegen. My pool does have a 2 port you mean in the skimmer? It also has a designated vac line on the side wall of the pool near the middle. I stopped using it because there didn't seem to be as much suction (since it and the skimmer were working at the same time) and the Poolvergnuegen wasn't climbing the walls very high.

Did your pool originally have a pressure cleaner with a catch bag?
For a few years I had used the skimmer adapter for a pool vac and simply turned off, blocked the pressure line and cut a hole in basket but cleaning the basket was kind of a pain.
So one day I replumbed the pressure line at the pump into the suction with a adjustable valve and now the cleaner hooks up on the pool wall like it's supposed to be. New basket.

A vac mate - I have one of those I can give away for free to anyone that wants it.

Im guessing you have a 1 speed pump?

There is a flow control device at the end called a flowkeeper - that has three positions - try all three and stick with the one that causes the most flow through the flowkeeper (=the least to the cleaner) the gray tab sticking out is the positioning tab.

Wait if you’ve got a dedicated vac line in the wall, why are you using the skimmer?

You say it works better? There should be a valve in front of pump to adjust flow between vac line and skimmer. That is how you adjust flow between the 2.

Plug it back in wall and adjust valves correctly and be done with it
