I think I want to pick up a mountain bike of some sort. It's mostly for street riding/exercise, cruising at the beach and just getting out of the fucking house during the day. I really don't have much to spend on one so I'm considering used but don't really know what to look for. I'm 6'2" tall. About 200lbs. Something with suspension I take it would be standard nowadays probably. I don't need some super expensive bad ass bike but I also don't want some piece of crap that won't last a year. Any of you experienced guys got a good used one you wanna get rid of maybe?

I know a bunch of people that went to performance bike and picked a good one up for around 350-400. 24 speed with disk breaks. Shocks in the front with rigid frame in the back. I actually got my same set up at sport authority for 350. Mine is an iron horse and I have had that thing for about 12 years and have done several thousand miles on it.

Buy used.....it will get you more. Used to always make sure they had at least Shimano Deore components. Not sure if much has changed. Been awhile. Used to be a bike with those components were at the entry levelish mark.....like 4,5-600 range. As you spend more, the components will get better and you'll start seeing disc brakes, or front and rear suspension. Go ride a couple of bikes....you'll definitely feel the difference with smoother shifting with better components.

Go to an actual bike shop too D.......not a spOrting goods store. :thumbsdown Not sure they are still around, but over there, I always liked the shop right by the golf course near El Camino College. Can't remember the street or shop name. But if you head down Crenshaw, you turn left on the street just before the college. Across the street from I think Alondra Golf Course, just before Prairie I believe. They always had the best selection in the area if they are still there. Also the shop on Sepulveda just East of Crenshaw...across from Rizzos and El Paso Cantina.:thumbsup

Based on the type of riding you are talking about a beach cruiser would probably be the best bet.

I bought my wife a 3 speed curser at the OC swap meet from Greenline Bikes. Good quality with decent components at a very, very reasonable price.
If you go this route make sure to get aluminum frame and not steel. They have 26 and 28" frame sizes in multiple configurations.

26 and 28 are the wheel sizes. You would want a 20 or 21" frame sz.

Lots of good info here:
