Who do you use? I’m with Paychex now. Decent, but tired of the constant price increases.

I talked to ADP, sounds good. Much cheaper, but their yelp reviews are straight up scary.

Any suggestions?

ADP

I made the mistake of giving a local guy a shot at my payroll because it was cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

Sounds like normal, I need to ignore yelp.

Thanks!!

Never trust Yelp ratings. They are extortionists. If you don’t give them advertisement money, they remove all your good reviews. They will not remove your company from their website either. Anyone can create a company profile for a business they don’t own. I do not understand how their business model is legal.

Gusto

Switched about 10 years ago and it’s been great, easy to use and saved a bunch in fees. Let me know if you consider it, because I can send you a referral code that would get both of us some months of waived fees.

3rd for Gusto. It’s tied to Xero our business accounting software.

Wow, all these people happy with ADP? They're known around my company as Always Disappointing People. I deal with them on a regular basis, and they're about 1 half-step above DMV workers, and that's being kind to DMV workers. I use ADP TotalSource, which is a PEO. Pour yourself some coffee, get comfortable, and PM me; I have many many horror stories to tell...

I recently set up an affiliate on Sequoia (PEO as well), and so far so good with them. Heard good things about Gusto but no direct experience.

Same here. Switched from Paychex to ADP a year ago and purchased workers comp through them as well. No complaints so far.

We use ADP and have been really happy. We also did our workmans comp with them this year for the first time. Saved a good chunk of change.

I was using BBSI for 9 years and just recently switched to Paychex. Going to give them a chance before I form an opinion.

As a contactor, you should look into an insurance captive. We saved a ton of money with a captive program versus the Payroll Provider WC coverage that we were previously on with BBSI. I posted about it previously here:

To some degree all the payroll services suck. I think a big part of any happiness comes from the implementation. If that is done well, happy sailing from there.

I'm with ADP now (again) as a small business, and the service is pretty horrible. Years ago, we had ADP while I worked for a huge manufacturing corporation, and we both worked together to create a complex set of rules and logic that mostly complied with all the CA bullshit, and implemented that across all of our CA locations. 10 years later, I asked about that since our current system has none of that, and I got the virtual blank stare from all of my account reps. Hello!? I'm in CA? Help me avoid the stupid lawsuits please!! (nope)

We are looking at alternatives, but haven't found one that looks a lot better. Gusto comes up a lot, but we are multi state, and supposedly they struggle with that. Paychex is another I've considered.

Concur. I hadn't heard of captive insurance programs before I got here, but this business uses one for auto insurance and workers' comp. Big savings compared to what they had before that.

Another option is to join a PEO (but not ADP's PEO ! ). I moved a company over to TriNet and then to Insperity. We were a large company that sold a piece of the business and became a small company (less than 100 employees), so our healthcare expense shot up. Our workers comp was also high, due to the piece of the company we sold, and despite that sale it stayed in our exmod rate for 3 years. That move to Trinet saved us a bunch. The move a year later to Insperity improved our service level quite a bit. Both had a better payroll system than ADP, which we had previous to that.

We have employees in multiple states and Gusto has worked well. Some are hourly and some are salary and have set up the shop employees to log in and out on their phone, it has geo tracking that it only allows to check in with in the area given. Will be implementing this with the field crew soon, just needs to be updated on every project.

I will let you in on a dirty secret… many payroll HR service providers ultimately are using ADP for payroll at some level for the back end. The HR service are proprietary IE WorkDay etc, but use ADP as the back end for complicated payroll. Even the federal reserve uses ADP for back up and disaster recovery in various ways.

Just go straight to the endgame with ADP.

As a side note look ADP is a dividend aristocrat and has beat the S and P 500 as a nice boring blue chip investment. I should probably put in a disclaimer here.
