I need to move my gas meter about 2'... (preparing for 200 service panel upgrade and gas has to be 36" from panel) I'm currently about 2' from the panel

I'm thinking it would be real simple to just put a 90 in just after the valve (about 6" off the ground which is concrete) and route new pipe about 24" due west for its new resting place (which will actually be closer to the house entry).

Should be an easy DIY job, a few 3/4" pipe nipples of various lengths and/or 90s

Any comments/suggestions on the legalities, permits or restrictions, etc? Necessary to have "A Guy" do it?

So Cal Gas estimates $1,100 but I'm pretty sure they will run the extension underground. Estimate by one of those online "fill in the blanks" estimate apps

If your doing a electrical service upgrade meet with your planner and ask about the gas meter relocation.

to do it correctly They ( gas Company )
Dig down cut the yellow Polly pipe and extended the line to new location

it should be a fairly easy move.

the gas company may have a regulation to have the gas stub up then shut off valve and the meter all in line

Its going to be more than a grand...I'd be shocked if it was only 1100.. CPS energy in Texas used to be assholes about gas meters and inverters for solar. Not really the case now, but it was for a long time. I had projects get cancelled over the cost to move meters.

Call the gas company, and a contractor.. It's all going to have to be on the up and up.

After meeting with the planner you can do the hard part….

dig the hole!

the actual hooking up the gas line feed and relocating the act meter would take 2-3 hours if that

make sure you call 811 dig alert 2 days prior to start the dig

Due to the way our house is/was built, and how someone added on a small room decades ago, our meter was underneath a small crawl space. SoCalGas sent a technician out and when they saw it, decided to relocate the meter.

Well, the guy was a little to big to fit underneath the crawl space to unbolt the meter. So I did it. It was a simple process. We didn't dig anything out, we just added pipe above ground to move the meter about the same distance you are considering. It didn't cost me a dime either.

Just sharing my experience.

Definitely have to agree with the last .... you don’t need the liability should something go wrong .... I dug up a gas line with my backhoe by accident “OPS” and flowing at 30-40 psi .... luckily 3 hours later the gas company company repaired it without fining me because it was not malicious .... just saying, in my world “don’t mess with my Fires and I won’t mess with your aka. Gas or High Voltage Electricity” ..... neither of those are containable when “Shit goes Wrong” .... it cost $$ but peace of mind is “Priceless” 😊

Pipe is probably galvanized and coated steel? Poly is pretty new still in the grand scheme. You need that melting machine to connect poly, but a pipe wrench to attach the galvy pipe.

I bet if you have it all dug up and the new location ready it will be a pretty smooth deal. Call gas company and say you smell gas. They will send a tech right away. Slip him a few hundies and I bet it goes without a hitch! ;)

Thanks for the replies... pretty much what I was thinking after doing some research... I requested the gas co to come out and evaluate

If needed I'll cough up the coin... Damn... and it looked like a easy job for Boyz on a Budget

Alot depends on the type of pipe underground, Poly move is farily simple, steel is another animal. You can cut a lot of cost by excavating per there requirements, backfilling and concrete yourself. Another thought is, contact a SCG planner. They may be able to send a service rep over to move the meter and houseline and not mess with service line. What city do you live in?

Good info. Anything after the tee would be his dime to move using a plumber or his skills. Moving a riser is gonna be money.

How about posting a pic so we can see what’s actually going on!

Definitely dig down and do it yourself, they won’t mind. Save a few bucks.

View attachment 1067601 Wanna move it about 24" to the right
Moving it to the right is that towards the street ( feed side).

looks like the gas company can cut out about 2 feet of pipe and reattach the riser. It’s an easy move but you need the correct tools. They have a heater cup that melts the Polly pipe to make connections.

the round disc looking thing is a pressure reducer /pressure regulator if that can be rotated about 3/4 turn and then move the top 90 a 1/4 turn everything may be able to be shifted. Basically swap places with the meter and the regulator

you might be able to do it yourself but you need to be careful not to twist the stub in the concrete

At some point....someone rebuilt that set to help the meter reader read it through the gate....it's bass ackwards. Doesn't need to be that way anymore now with the transmitter now technically. It can be rebuilt back to the original way it was...it's actually the reg that needs to be 3' away (on a radius) from a source of ignition. And ain't nuthin DIY about breaking down that set and moving stuff....stop it....😂

To the right is away from the street/distribution line..

yep... several years ago gas co came out and made some adjustments. I used to park a boat over there and they were concerned the meter would be too close and damaged if hit

I've got both SCE and gas co coming out for to check regarding what I need to do... I held off on calling them out thinking I'd like to do it myself and not bring any attention to the mod..... Still hoping I can modify above ground and not have to bust up the concrete and dig,,

That can definitely be accomplished above ground, if you screw with something below ground and make it noticeable they will probably flag you on it.

We moved my brothers meter and used a jet sweat to shut the gas off at his house only, then plumbed it to 5' in front of the house. Concrete slab was poured never any issue, even after they swapped the meter for the smart meter a few years back.

The only thing is that when you hear and smell all that gas it gets pretty sketchy.

Just turn it off at the valve and add the pipe you need. I wouldn't tell anybody. What's the gas company going to do? You can always put it back after the panel is done.

That's right, I'm fast and loose with work at your house!! 😜 😜 😜

Why would you need one of those when you could just shut off the valve? 🤔

This thought came to me about 3am this morning..

So Ca Gas moved my meter several years ago. Their decision, I had nothing to do with it...

As it sits right now it's about 24" from the panel.....Not in compliance with code

They moved it too close to the service panel ...

So...... Now I'm of the opinion they should be responsible to move it to the appropriate location to comply with code

I think I'm on to something here!

I had to do this at my old house. Moved it about 15ft. I called SCG and they did the whole thing for about $1,000. It would have cost me more in time just to trench and back fill.

What was all the worry about passing inspection to begin with then? Shouldn't it be your city inspector that is gonna no go you anyway? SCE doesn't care cuz it's not their gas or not "their" liability that's gonna blow you up if something happens...lol.
