I posted another thread about my wife locking her keys in her car. We have roadside service through USAA and they sent a guy out to get the car open.

He did a good job and it only took a few minutes. When he got done we didn't have to sign any paperwork or anything and the guy started to leave. We went back inside and I asked my wife if we should tip the guy. She only had 20's so I said to give him one. That's the price you pay for locking your keys inside your car!

Anyway, the guy left before we could tip him. My wife said the tow guy must charge USAA enough for coming out but I said that guy is just a driver and he doesn't get anything extra.

So, should I have tipped him or is he just doing his job? He did seam to take car not to f up the car getting it open.

I say no. You are already paying for the service.

If he didnt scratch/ding the car, was pleasant I would tip him. If not send him down the road.
I once tipped an AAA tow truck driver for letting me use his floor jack for an hour on the side of the road, while I replaced a leaf spring on my fifth wheel trailer. All he did was hold the flashlight! LOL.

I had to use my AAA not too long ago and when the guy was finished I tipped him because he was quick getting there and quick on the job. The one time I used AAA and the guy lagged getting there and was not very proficient at his job, I did not tip.

I would normally say no.
BUT....I had one when I broke down half between Paso Robles and Lost Hills at midnight on Thanksgiving heading to Aptos.. He offered to make sure that if the place he dropped my car at wasn't open the next day he would tow it to a shop that was and give them all my info. I tipped him 40. turns out he had to tow it to another shop. well worth the tip IMHO.

For anyone that said "NO", thats BS... The guy is out working, and helping you out.... Come on!, it never hurts to do something nice for someone who is helping you out..!! Geez!! Are u really going to miss that $20, especially if the guy is nice and friendly, w/o damaging your car/window...

Some of these AAA guys have the personality of a can of paint, in that case, I would just thank him/her and be on my way, otherwise, help the guy out a little, that job doesn't pay much...!!

I've had AAA all my life, and its saved my ass 3 times!!..:thumbsup

btw, your wife's a nice lady, it was nice of her to want to help him out!! I woulda too!

Tip whoever you want!

If you feel it in your heart to give someone a lil extra, then do it. You don't need approval from anyone else. I'm not a fan of the standard rule of tipping at restaurants and bars. I think service people that do a half ass job then think they are entitled to a tip due to their position are out of their fucking mind. I'll tip anyone whom I feel deserves it. Be it a waiter, a bar tender, my dry cleaner, the guy that rotates my tires or even when I give a bum money on the street. If I see them putting in the extra effort, or I just like them, I'll tip. It's nobody business who I tip and who I decide not to tip, therefore there opinion of who I tip and how much is information I choose to not care about.

What's that thing the bible says about just giving from the heart?..Or you reap what you sow..

Before I knew their was the RV / Trailer / MC premium service I called AAA for a tow.

Even though I didn't have the upgrade, the driver gave me the extra service for free.
I tipped him good,, and always tip them a few bucks ever since.

They are usually kids just going into the military, or just getting out,, and usually thinking about going back in.

You should tip when you feel it is necessary, and deserved. You should not tip because you feel like you have to... tipping has become 'the norm' and most times expected, thats a load of crap.

I mean, I don't want to argue on this topic.. All I can say, is it's my style to tip someone for doing something that helped me out. That's just how I am, especially if im stranded in a parking lot, or on the side of the fwy..

I just get annoyed when someone automatically says no... Of course I don't tip someone everywhere I go, but in this case, locking my keys in the car, being stranded, of course it never hurts to say Thankyou and give the guy/girl a $20, thats all... :thumbsup

They guys that drive the lil tow trucks do not not make a lot of money. Aaa drivers take it in the shorts the worst. Lock outs pay the driver 7$ flat tires are like 10$ local 5 mile or less tows he might get 12$. Most aaa drivers are commishion only so do the math. U pay 50$ a year to have the service. The tow company prib banged usaa for 35-85$ ull never know the contracted rate. The driver will see less then 10$ on his check (average) per call he runs. 3am u need ur keys... The tow truck driver is comin out to save your day for 7$. With all that said I realize that the driver chose to do what he does and if he doesent like it he can try and find a better job. A tip is ALWAYS appriciated. I think in all service base industrys its ok to tip. Do u tip ur waitress?? Shes just doing her job. Ur paying for her service in the price of the meal. Why do we tip them? If ur happy with a service that was privided to you and u wanna show ur grattitude then give then a tip. 5$ 10$ 20$ 500$ what ever u want. The driver will be happy with what ever. I once got a 500$ tip from a rich canadian couple when I towed there 45' prevost 3 million dollar coach. I was scared to scratch it. They were so happy with the care I took of there coach they felt it was worth 500$ on top of the 1250$ they were paying for the tow. If ur asking if u should have then u should have.

I totally understand your view, not arguing either. but in the same breath it annoys the shit out of me when people expect to be tipped for doing there job. Not really talking waitresses etc. but yes if someone does go above and beyond expectations they are tipped. And yes i tip the tire changer guy when he fixes my flat even though the shop charges me nothing.

This is how tipping works....if you feel good about doing it, then do it.

You just might make a difference is a "person who tries to please" day.

I tipped a AAA guy $20 who hung his ass out in traffic to change a car tire. I tipped an AAA guy who unlocked one of my boxtrucks when he didn't have to.

All my stuff is old and crappy. It all ends up on a hook or a roll off at one point or another.:D

We were between Yuma and Phoenix in the middle of no where and lost a tire on our 745. I went to change the tire and realized I didn't have a socket that fit inside the holes. So I called BMW, they sent a roadside assistant out. The kid was really nice, I thought we were gonna die out in the middle of no where. I ended up tipping him a fifty because he was so nice.

I have no problem tipping a guy like that. He saved my ass, he was way cool and he was there a lot faster than I expected. He deserved dinner or some drinks on me.

I once got a flat tire on the 40 late at night on a Friday. AAA and Ford roadside wouldn't cover a trailer. I had no spare so I unhooked the boat and drove back to Walmart to buy one (I tried tipping the manager $20 for waiting 20 minutes outside the store after they were closed to sell me a tire), but he wouldn't take the money, he said he was not allowed.:thumbsdown

I would've bought a new rim at Walmart too and had them mount it but there auto dept was closed and I couldn't find any shop in the high desert that could mount it for me at 12am. Even the truck stops wouldn't do it and I didn't feel safe leaving the boat on the 40, in the dark while I drove back down to San Bernadino to get it mounted.

However the roadside guy (can't remember their name but the have a huge sign off the 40 and Broadway), anyways.. It took the guy about 5 hours to get there. Then he dismounted my tire and put the new one on and sent me on my way in 25 mins. It was a Holiday weekend and I was greatful to have someone show up, but that guy took forever and he charged me almost $400 so I didn't tip him...he made enough.:D
