I have a CA vehicle in Havasu that I need smogged next week.

I don't believe Needles requires smog checks so there are none there. I filled out the DMV form 256 statement of facts and told them mine was stored in AZ for 15 years. Not sure it still works that way or not.

The guy that does it in needles does not know what he is doing then tell you he can’t work on it for 2 months and never has any cars there

Same here, I think his name is Eric. Granted my stuff he has smogged is newer and will pass but it has been quick in and out many times while you wait.

I have a 2001 Excursion with the 5.4 and 208k miles on it, mine is far from new.

He never could smog my 97 Jeep took it to guy in El Monte he changed a sensor and it passed dealt with the guy in needles for 9 months and 600 miles later

I hear mixed reviews about keeping a car in So cal 95% of the time with AZ plates and having a CDL

I had my cars with AZ plates in CA for 5 years before I retired to AZ. Never had a problem.

And he's just a few blocks from the dmv too.

How much do you drive it? Does it sit on the street?

If you don’t drive it a lot might be worth doing. I’d be less apt to do it if it sits on the street.

I have an FJ cruiser that is AZ plated that spends most of it's time in AZ

I heard someone comment that if you have an AZ plate and a CDL it can be an issue.

I'm not shocked as this is CA and they are hungry for fees.

At worst they will write you a ticket. At best you tap dance out of it. There is also a webpage where people can tattle to the CHP about their neighbors with cars registered in other states.

That is assuming you get stopped. Don't get stopped they will never know.

I had mine registered in Az for less than 2 months before getting a nasty letter in the mail from the CHP telling me I was "Guilty" of a crime. Never got pulled over and I live in a very rural area.

Why am I not surprised ?

Don't put the Az registered vehicle in your name. Put it in a family member with a different first name and address.. If your Ca. drivers license matches the registration, they can write you or impound your vehicle. If it is another name, just tell them you are driving a relatives car. I did have a Az. registered boat trailer towed and impounded by CHP in Indio years ago. It is not worth the hassle.
