For once I have actual boating content to add. We bought this boat back in early August. The boat was manufactured in 1993.
We took it out for several trips and noticed it needed several things. The Jack plate didn't work from the start and a crack on the back of the boat started growning larger. On our last trip we blew out the rubber insert for the prop about a 1/2 mile from the launch. Now we had a few trips on her and took her to Johns Custom Marine for an evaluation (Stoker Boats) I had them check everything. Motor was in good shape for its age but there were a few major problems. The Transom had a good amount of rot causing the crack and the jack plate was obsolete so repair was not an option. We pulled the trigger on making this boat new again. Johns Custom Marine took it to OC boat repair for the transom repair. Here are a few pics of the process. Johns De-rigged the boat and sent it to OC boat repair

How long do you estimate the repairs will take? Season over?

I dipped into the emergency cash fund for that one. Replacing them now is alot cheaper then later. They require all new holes and they will have set back brackets making it easier to get in the boat. When I went in he said he was going to have to cut the old swim steps to accomodate the new jack plate. Stainless jackplate and billet steps will look awesome

:lmao you obviously aren't using the same guy I did when I replaced the transom on the Jesse James Ultra. My guy told me 3-4 weeks and it ended up being 7 months.
Should be back on the water by the end of September... We can't wait.

Glad you are still going to be able to enjoy some time on the water with it before winter shuts you down...it'll be dead nut right when you tuck it away, which means it will be dead nut right when you pull it out next spring...

I stopped by OC Boat Repair yesterday to check it out. The first thing the guy told me was not to be alarmed. Normally people freak out when they see their boat at this stage. It looked like a bomb went off in my boat. The transom was almost all the way out. The guy had a hammer and chisel working out all the wood that was bonded to the fiberglass. They are going to install the new transom tomorrow and increase the bond to the top and bottom half?s where the motor mounts to the boat. The old ? ? knee braces that were in the boat are now being replaced with 1? braces. Over the years since this boat was made they had incorporated a few changes in the build process. These will all be incorporated into the boat now

To better understand the process - are they basically gutting out the wood only and leaving the outer fiberglass "shell" in place? Then simply adding new wood and glassing it in?

Yes, they chisel out all the wood leaving the gelcoat shell and fibeglass. They they bond in the new wood. Once that is in place they repair all the holes and cracks cleaning up the gel coat

Detail question here: When they "chisel out" the wood, will the void created be straight and flat with perfect edges? Ready to accept a new matching piece of wood to sort of fit in like a puzzle? Or do they simply drop in new wood that's as close as possible in size then fill in the "chiseled" rough edges/gaps with resin?

First of all good to hear that the boat is gonna work out and you guys will get great enjoyment out of it sooner than later.:thumbsup

I would have shit twice had I seen my boat like that, my one chief complaint and many may think I'm being a tard but I'd be pissed if I saw all the interior and other shit just thrown in the front and resting on the dash and front seats, this tells me that although they may do great work maybe their attention to detail lags. Just me but that's how I feel.

They made straigh cuts at the edges and when I was there he was hand chiseling out the rest of the wood. The main transom is going to be one peice. Where the top meets the bottom they are going to layer a few peices ontop of eachother to get a solid fit

Understood. But I think a few of us would still enjoy seeing detailed pics of the process. Thanks and keep them coming.

I have had work done at OC several times over the years. It will come back cleaner than when he dropped it off:thumbsup Nice pic of Sal sr in one of the pics he's been doing it for years.

As far as shops go I have a boat at one right now and I dont pay attention to the interior and other shit I look at the repair being done. My friend noticed and said your front seats are over there your other seats are in another boat. I mentioned I am sure it will all end up back together and cleaner than before. You know how is it Dezertrider just like a job site in the middle of demo.

I asked about mine going to stainless the reverse bends on back end would not work so I am having them put the one piece plastic that they use on the Eliminators on. The 2 piece from Ultra always gave me issues when docked where the middle insert would pop out. Happened to my friends ultra while docked at Aquapalooza. Pain in the ass to pop it back in.

They installed two pieces of 3/4 marine grade ply wood glassed together and where the middle section got an extra piece of 3/8 plywood to build up the transom to meet the top deck. They were just about to fill in the spaces around the edges when I got there. Once they lower the top deck they will build up layers of glass to the transom to make the bucket area behind the motor

OC Boat Repair does amazing work and you will be more than happy with their work and the finished product. Yes, the disassembly process may not be the most beautiful thing you will ever see. Rest assured, when Sal and his staff are finished with your boat, it will look as good as it did when you dropped it off....maybe even better! Thank you for sharing the progress pics. with the rest of us.

I have a 96 - 18' skeeter bass boat that has had 2 transoms already and now needs a 3rd.

Why can't the wood be replaced with aluminum?

If you could PM me the cost of your repair I would appreciate it..my last 2 jobs were under warranty so I don't know the cost..thx

They are doing several new things to make the boat as strong as possible. They told me 10 year warranty. I should get it back in a few days
