I know what it does but what exactly is it? Is it a building somewhere in the middle of the country full of servers, is it a satellite or numerous satellites (traveling back and forth across the flat earth 😜)? Who owns the internet, do companies like Spectrum, SuddenLink, Allo, etc. pay someone for using it and then charge us the end user? Who invented/started the internet, I know it was Al Gore šŸ˜‚ but did he have any partners? And how come someone has not invented something like the ā€œmagic boxā€ so we can all stream the internet without a ā€œproviderā€? And finally do you think someday we won’t have to have cables coming into our houses.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is I hate internet providers…..all of them, even the new Allo fiber optic I got has been less than stellar, but mostly on the customer service side. It’s very unfortunate that internet has become a necessity, like electricity and or natural gas etc. Could you imagine if your electricity worked or didn’t like internet service!!!

in simplest terms the internet is a network of networks. whom you pay to access it, that is an entirely different topic.

I have been working on the MS campus refresh for years and on several Amazon big projects over the last 20 years. You all have no idea of what goes through their fiber lines, servers, highest security buildings and how they really make their money. Billion dollar projects are nothing for them, number one goal is keep the system running.

Whst is the "dark internet"? How is it different then the "regular internet"? What makes it dark? Who controls it? What are the dangers of it? Do regular anti-virous programs work on it? How does one access it?

Wait it gets better. There’s an Internet 2 you’ve probably never heard of.

It’s made up of a mostly private peering network between universities and major counties. Quite a few large Public K-12 school districts tie into as well, mostly at the county or local university level.

The intent is to have a dedicated bandwidth network for education and research.

It’s tied into the public internet (the one everyone else is using) at quite a few interpeering points.

I'd just like to understand how/why it exists... who created it and for what? how does it work? From what little I have heard it sounds like a separate internet just for criminal activities basically?

The internet "should" have been the accumulation of human knowledge and freedom to search and learn. It didn't take long and it became a market place, controlled by those that look to control and profit. Then it got worse. The concept was noble, but it has been monetized as most things in human existence have.

What is it?

It's a bunch of one's and zero's traveling all around the earth, from one location to another.

Who built it?

Our military.

It basically as simple as that!

Fake news!

Everyone knows Al Gore invented the internet.

In simplest terms, the internet is an interconnected collection of computer networks and systems with the goal of sharing data over pre-agreed upon standards. This data might be web pages, pictures or videos, emails, etc.

It doesn’t exist in any one location. Instead it’s widely distributed and addressed via those pre-agreed upon standards mentioned before. Easiest way to think of the addressing is phone numbers. I dial your number, your phone rings.

Any deeper and I’ll need a beer :)

Darknet is just another layer of the existing ā€œinternetā€

Short answers….

Deemed dark due to the questionable material found there.

No one controls it

Dangers include the normal shit, you look for it, you find it, might be a legit thing, might be a honey pot. Can you order coke, yup, can you find porn you shouldn’t be looking for, yup, can you buy a list of social security numbers / credit cards, yup

Anti-virus is anti-virus, it protects your computer, not your connection or destination.

I’d just say highly avoid it if all possible. If you decide to go down the road, PLEASE understand the concepts of opsec, buy a burner laptop, and use a public internet connection in an area without cameras or having your phone on you.

The internet is the new 411, of old dial up phone days. It replaces the phone book and the library.

I remember calling up 411 to find a hardware store near by, and they gave me an address and a Phone #

… The ones and the zeros… Yes…

…The military… I’m going to have to think about that real hard…
… I worked hand in hand with the Marine Corps and the Army Corps Of Engineers from 1965 to 1969… Was I watching the military starting to build the internet???…HammšŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļøā€¦

Thanks for the link bud...good info.
That was an interesting read...
Is kapersky a good anti-virous program? I'm currently using AVG.

I've been using it for decades, and have never been infected with anything. It scans all my email in the Outlook app. Handy feature to have.

Of course, I'm also Very careful as well.

I'm not a fan of Avast for multiple reasons. It's not something I'd recommend.

The Dark Web was created by our own government so that operatives could have a secure lines of communication. They realized if they would open it up, it would give them the ability to be more effective in "spying" by tapping into other conversations. Their thought process was that new technology often times is used in the beginning by criminals because it gives them an advantage. The book I am listening to cited the advent of the automobiles. Criminals bought them almost immediately because they had the money to and the cops didn't haven't such resources.

Internet is housed in datacenters spread around most major cities in the USA and other countries.
Currently datacenters consume 3% of all of the electricity produced in the US.
By 2030 they will burn 10%
By 2040 they will burn 30%
The reality is a smart phone needs as much energy as a Honda Civic consumes each year.
The need for data storage is exploding due to AI, gaming, apps on phones and software that allows you to store information and not deleting.

One data center building consumes 100Meg of power per year. it normally use 8 million gallons of fresh water for cooling each year.
Most of the large Google datacenter have 10 building that size and they have many in the us currently and are building more.

A nuke power plant typically produce 750 MEG of power, the new modular style are 500 Meg each.
If we started building a new Nuke today it would be complete by 2040, but no one will loan the 25 Billion to build a Nuke.

Bottom line
Invest in power
Invest in water
Become an electrician

This was real internet.

Chat rooms. IM. Asking everyone ASL? Spending 30 minutes trying to sign on, having fun for 6 minutes then a phone call kicks you offline.

I saw my first picture of boobies on AOL. And I've loved them ever since.

mIRC was the Real chat deal. But, you're probably not old enough to remember those days! 😜
