I am rather anal when it comes to our 1999 SkiSanger, as in really picky. Since we bought it it has only tasted Merc Quicksliver 20-40 oil and I change the fluid in the velvet drive every other year using Hydrotex HyTorque at 9 bucks a quart.
6 years ago I bought a half dozen Quicksilver oil filters from Werst Marine online. I get the Ouicksilver oil from their store down in Sac. I have a couple gallons still but am out of filters. I really don't want to drive to Sac for a filter, but I might...
The engine is a (Chevy) 350 Mag Tournament Ski 315 HP throttle body injected. It has the 1/2 quart filter on it because there is no way on this earth to get a full quart filter up in there.
You guys, you anal guys like me..if you are not running Merc oil filters what are you running?
I ain't putting some autozone crapola on there, I don't mind paying 20 bucks for an oil filter if I get my money's worth.
Any suggestions?

Wix on the truck, Moroso on Race motors, Sierra or Mallory on Boats...no particular reason for the order but cost is a factor.

Napa Gold, never a Fram, they just do not filter stuff well. Wix is much like Napa Gold.

Mike

Napa now has a Platinum line out.. not sure what the difference is but it is 2x the price of the Gold so it must be good...

I run Napa Gold right now..

Carquest ( Wix ), Napa gold ( wix) . Never use a Fram on anything. I have had a few fail. When the Fram canister twists off the filter, and you have to remove the motor and use a die grinder it is time for a quality filter. With my discount a Fram costs me a $ 1.77 ? Can it really be a good filter !!

I found this thread to be very useful, informative and demonstrative. They went to great lengths to compare for the benefit of the users and you might find it to be a good read as I did.

You're right it was a real good one. :D

K&N "canister" because of the 1" socket wrench fitting on top.
Makes the awkward oil filters much easier to remove.

Thanks to everyone who posted their preferences.

I only use Baldwin filters on the boat now. Heavy duty thick shell. Has a high internal burst pressure. Motor builder recommended it.

Baldwin makes a good filter. Many other good filters out there like Wix (Napa), Puralator, many champoin labs filters are ok (various brands). Stay away from anything orange and your good.

Funny you just bring this up. I always have run Merc-quicksiver filters on my boat since the day I bought it new.
But last week I went to Worst Marine and they didn't have any Merc-Quicksilver filters, water or oil.
What they did have was some off brand replacement filters made in China, there was no way I was going to run that shit on my boat.
Then because of the economy and all the boat shops going under I couldn't find anyone that had the filters.
So for the first time since I have had my boat I put Wix marine filters on it from Riebes Auto parts, Napa.
There made in the USA and look premium quality to me so I went with them and put them on my boat last night.
Cost 27.45 for 2 filters. Water seperator and oil.
I was very hesitant to do so but oh well it's done now and that's what I'm running this summer.

Fun Times that is a lot of info, I am interested in that High Efficiency Merc filter now...that is a major improvement in filtration the way I read what you wrote. I just wish there was someplace local to buy the dang things.

Thanks for taking the time to put that info out. Much appreciated.

Fun Times can you or anyone else cross reference that Merc High efficiency Filter to a Baldwin or other more common filter brand...looks like the best way to buy the H.E. units is online,..I can't even get werst Marine to bring up the part number.

WIX on everything. :thumbsup

I have two broken Fram Filters in my garage that I bought that way from the store. Shake the box before you buy it to see if you can hear the internals rattle. I have heard so many stories about Fram filters failing and the company not backing up the customer. Screw that, I'll stick with Wix.

System 1 is my favorite oil filter for the boat. I like how I can open and look through the screens, clean and replace. It's much easier than cutting a filter open.

I also have oil analysis performed every other oil change.

The info i posted is how Mercruiser markets their newer oil filter that came out around 07ish i believe it was. You can see some information about it in the link below.

Sorry but I don't really know of a direct aftermarket replacement part number for mercs newer oil filter, But like stated by everyone that knows engine oils & filters, the top four best would be Wix (etc by NAPA),;) Mobil 1, K&N, & Baldwin part number B27.;)

Good luck with your decision, I can see it's eating away at you just a little bit.:hmm:D

For you guys saying no to or had probs with the Fram filters. Were they the HP series? Motor builder equips his motors with these. Just curious as I've never had an issue.

The HP series are, IMHO, different. We ran HP4 on our go-fast small blocks for years per the engine builder.

I've been in the auto parts business for 40 years and my preference is Wix. Currently using CARQUEST "blue", which is a Wix filter.
