It open to relieve water pressure when the T'stats are closed.

One of the easier ways to tell if it's acting up is when the motor is up to temp and you have good water pressure, but the pisser doesn't have much coming out, it's starting to leak. If the motor is overheating with good water pressure and poor pisser, that COULD be a possibility as well.

Awesome- Thanks for the lesson! I think Thats my next task- replace this "valve" Judging by everything else on this motor, maintenance was the farthest thing from the previous owner's mind. I just replaced both T stat's and they were completely corroded.

I don't have T'stats so my poppet isn't even used. Never have an issue and 2 less things to faol or cause blockage.

On those 2.5L motors, the poppet valve has a flat plastic washer that a bolt goes through. That plastic washer is what the spring rests against. Over time the spring pressure bends the plastic washer causing it to be bowl shaped. I believe when that happens, it causes the poppet to open easier which would make your engine run cooler.
