Im in IT. Its hit and miss on the ones I have done. More miss.

Its honetly best practice to just get a new pc with it on already. Depends how critical the machine is to you.

I spent 15 years as a network and Windows Server and Workstation engineer, and I am keeping Windows 7 on my desktop and two laptops and my home server is Windows Server 2008. They all work great and hate having to change operating systems.

The “Home” versions always suck, and the only reason I know of to go to Windows 10 is for the touchscreen features, which I don’t use. i use my iPad Pro if I want to use touchscreen, but even with it I have a keyboard/cover for typing (like I’m doing right now). Stay with Windows 7 until you get a brand new touch screen laptop or desktop.

Will keep you updated.

You let me know how it goes I need to do it myself.

Was it a smooth process??

I just upgraded on my surface that I use fir work

This is for my home desk top. Mst of the time I'm on my laptop but the router is through the desk top.

Thinking might be the best option. Would hate to update and then the computer is garbage. Would be a waste of money.

I'm staying with Windows 7 Pro till this machine dies....

Leaning more towards this when the computer eventually dies.

Leaning this direction

Dont just keep windows 7 until you replace the computer

I upgraded my window 7 laptop to 10. I took it out back and put a 45 slug through the hard drive. It was a clean shot, it didn't feel it. Enjoying my new laptop.:D

The company I work for is changing everyones computers to 10. All new PCs. I'm not much of a computer nerd, but I could figure out most changes by myself. Much faster. Helps our engineers to use cadd and revit.

New hard ware is drasticly diffrent then old. Older systems will see a slow down as windowa 10 uses more resources. How powerful your system is will determine how much

Has anyone done the upgrade? If so, was the process seemless? I'm thinking of upgrading my home PC.

It was seemless when I did it, but that was in 2014 when Win10 first came out!

That computer has since hit the bricks, and I built a whole new one a couple years ago and installed Win10 fresh from scratch.

Honestly Rich, you shouldn't waste youR time on a computer than came with Win7. It would be like putting a Whipple on a flathead. Yeah, it will be faster, but a noN Whipple'd LS will be even faster than than that old flathead could ever be. Not to mention if you have a Win7 computer, all the components are probably around 7 years old or so now? They probably won't last too much longer.

A new PC with a Solid State hard drive, lots of memory and a good video card will be money well spent on your part. It will faster than your dinosaur could ever be built to perform to.

With that being said...

Win10 is now a free upgrade AGAIN, so it won't cost you anything to try it!

If it does everything he needs it too, why spend money on a new one?

The reason in the business side that we are in a rush to upgrade to Windows 10 is that its sunsetting in January. Which means no more pacthes and fixes when vulnerabilitys are found.

So if we dont upgrade, we have to pay for extended support to microsoft.

That being said. Ill post a link when i get home of some killer refurb machines we have been installing. For $200 bucks, they are blazing fast.

This is a completely incorrect statement.

Win10 is Much more efficient than Win7 ever was. It will run faster on pretty much any hardware Win7 was originally installed on.

I know this from my personal experience building computers. But you can always Google it and find out the same thing.

It boots faster, but i found it to run older programs significantly slower. My office 2010 for example took forever to load. Same with some of the older cad stuff i had. I swapped back and forth twice on my laptop. It did somethings fast, but others slower. Mainly the stuff that was run in 32 bit. The 64 bit stuff was faster.

You are confusing "programs* performance with an " operating system" performance.

A 10 year old version of office will load slow no matter what operating system you are on.

Get Office 365 and Win10. Add an SSD your old laptop and all your shit will work like a dream.

They loaded faster on windows 7. That is an operating issue, not the programs

As mentioned, it's end of life for Windows 7 - no more security updates as of next month. You better believe there's tons of hacking a-holes waiting for that to happen...

In my experience, the "upgrade" was always wonky, at best. Best to start with a clean slate. PRO version.

Win 10 is an easy transition from 7. It was 8 that was the mind-fuck and didn't have the "start" button.

"Moores Law", which since the 1960's was accepted as a rule of thumb (processing power doubles every 2 years) is largely outdated now. Meaning, any new computer you buy will easily handle anything you can throw at it. The days of running out of memory and space are mostly gone.

Totally disagree. Office 365 is a cloud based subscription service where speed is based on your internet connection.

I use Windows 7 Pro and Office 2007 Enterprise and they are lighting fast...fast as I can click a mouse or touch a key, on 2 laptops, one desktop and a Windows 2008 Server, with Internet off or on.

I have Windows 10 on my lap top and have no issues with it. 'm leaning more towards leaving the desktop as W7 Pro.

Windows 7 works fine.....if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I'm afraid of this which is why now leaning towards leaving it alone.

My wife's ;laptop is W8 and I cannot stand it. Hoping my W7 Pro doesnt bite the dust anytinme soon.

Thanks and I've decided to leave it alone until it dies a slow death.

My laptop upgraded on its own, seems like it was a long time ago. Then my laptop sat parked for a long time, when I started this new construction project I found myself using my laptop more and more, but it was running super slow. I had my brother remote in and said there is nothing wrong with it just an old machine. Ordered a new larger hard drive and some ram, fucker, is like a whole new machine now.

Not a fan of Windows 10. Loved 7. 10 reminds me more of an app based system. Then they want you to download and or pay for add ons. Prime example is with 10 I suddenly didn't have a media player. Was given a dvd movie to watch and wouldnt play unless I paid for the player app. I had to search online for a free version just to watch the dang movie.

Well I would agree with you, but then we would both be wrong! Lol

Or both be right....

Office 365 can be used either way. As a browser based application, OR as a desktop application. It will also download to your phone.

One subscription comes with 5 separate accounts, with unlimited log on's, so you can use it where ever you are.

The best part for me is...

Each subscription comes with one terabite of of cloud based storage space, so I can get to my files from any location.

I still have a copy of Office 2007 I bought ages ago. They are both on my laptop.

365 is light years ahead of 2007. As it should be.

Check it out. You'll dig it.

Thanks, I didn’t know about the terabyte of storage.

I’ve got licensing for Windows Pro up to 2007, Office Pro Plus up to 2010, Server 2008 R2, SQL 2008, Terminal Server and clients and Exchange, so I don’t really want to buy anything since I’m out of the business now and don’t do much except family photos and family real estate stuff.

For now everything works fine for what little I do, I’ve been out of the business since 2013 and am not up to date on the newer stuff.

I figured this all out by accident really...

I had maxed out my Free Dropbox storage. They wanted 99.00 a year for more storage.

MS gives you the whole Office suite, SIX accounts, AND that storage for 99.00 a year.

Kinna no brainer eh?! lol Fuck Dropbox! :D

That is a smoking deal....

Will it take a full size video card??

Like a GTX 1600 or something like that?

Its a mid size case. So I think so. But these arent gaming machines. Although some games would probably be fine.
They have VGA and a Display port, so you can run dual monitors if thats your concern.

Remember, these are off lease units, but they really are simple and no bloatware installed.

I wasn't concerned about gaming at all.

But I do run 2 4k 34" monitors. You need to have a good video card to do that.

In any case, this is a killer deal for the components that are provided. A new case would be a minor expence.

(No pun intended). :p

Yes definitely. It does everything that most of my clients need and more. The 16 GB or Ram really helps. And its Win Pro so if you have to put in a Domain environment you are good to go! I just looked on a machine, it has the Intel HD 4600 Graphics Chip which is definitely lower end. But pretty much you just need to be able to crank up the resolution for those big monitors.

The wife's newer laptop and my new PC are Win 10. No issues. My 12 year old PC has been moved to the garage. I'm leaving Win 7 on that one till it dies. I converted my 10 y.o. laptop from Win 7 to Win 10. Slowed it WAAAAAY down. Then it died. My advice would be to NOT convert to 10. Just get new hardware w/10 already loaded.
