My shoulder has been hurting me for months and the pain goes from the outside of my arm all the way into my neck.
Today I went in for an MRI. I freaked out once they rolled me back into the tube. WHAT A PUSSY!
I've never reacted like this to anything, major anxiety. Felt trapped. Anyone else ever had one or feel weird getting one?
Guess they are gonna get me on some valium before I go in and try again.:p

I've had a shit ton of them, biggest problem I have is holding completely still for 6 or 7 minutes at a time (unless I'm stoned) :D

I had 3 of them and I'm claustrophobic. When I had mine the guy suggested I close my eyes before I start going in and keep them closed. He also had music playing for me. I pretended I was in a tanning bed. But, it was very difficult for me to not freak out.

I think your reaction is normal. Well as normal as Ziggy can get :D

I actually close my eyes and start counting minutes. Last time it seemed to really help. I've had 5 or 6 of them done myself. None of them were great.

Might be part of the issue. My nose was barely an inch or two from the top and the position of my arms made me feel bound and confined. I'm not a small fellow to begin with so not having any space to wiggle did me in.....then the guy tells me "its gonna be a 30 minute scan, you ok?"
Um no, get me out. I started sweating. I was rather surprised that it affected me this way. Now I'm nervous about trying again.
I've had CT's before but the machine is not as confining, those were cake.
.
And yeah, define normal:D:D

I think that is a common reaction. The Valium will help. Up here, we call it ativan.

I had an MRI done a couple weeks ago for a knee injury and was only partially in and kinda felt claustrophobic. I had mine done really early in the morning (5:30am) so I was able to sleep a little even with all the sound. Maybe try having it scheduled early?

Last one I "tried" was to get a look at my arthritic degenerating neck......I was a bit freaked out by the closeness but the main issue was I couldn't hold my neck in that position for 30+ minutes and I aborted right a way. Had t o find a standup machine and that's the way to go.

Only other one I've had was to check me out after falling down a flight of stairs and getting knocked cold....I was drunk as a Canadian lumberjack first night in town and that made it a piece of cake.:skull

Complete opposite for me. The last time I had an MRI, they had to wake me up. Having 4 kids will do that to you I guess.

They have MRI machines that are not like the old tube machines. Everytime I've had one they have asked me if i'm good in tight small places and offered the "open" version of the MRI if needed. My shoulders rub the sides of the tube machines if I'm real relaxed but I haven't freaked out.... yet:D

That's where I lost my comfort too, I was wedged in at the shoulders and my arms to my sides just tightened the grip.:(

How are you in elevators .... any anxiety at all? I can hardly get in one after being stuck in one but I force myself to do it or I know it would get worse. Same with flying, that one experience seemed to make me claustrophobic, as far as an MRI, no way.

No problem there, been stuck in one full of people between floors. Took us at least a half hour to get freed, had to climb up to the next floor. Hotel personnel was there waiting with champagne.:drink
I will say that I don't like the glass elevators on the outside of buildings like I once used to.
Flying I'm like a giddy kid, no problems there either.
.
The experience I had today was a first for me.

?? I hope all is well buddy.

My daughter has what's called a chiari malformation (brain exudes past the skull at back of her head). For now it's a steady diet of MRI every 6 months and monitoring. Brain MRI on a 16 month old obviously requires general anesthesia. Hopefully she grows out of it, if not then brain surgery is required.

Scary stuff for sure, but was really scary prior to diagnosis (fluid on her spine). Hopefully she never needs surgery, but even if she does, the prognosis for full recovery is pretty good.

Once again, sorry Zig...

2 yrs ago I had a massive stroke.
They ran me through every test they could think of.
The MRI was the worst.
They said "just lay still, it'll be about 30 mins"
I was already freaked out being the first time i'd ever been in a hospital, not to mention the right side of my body doesn't work anymore.
They put me in that tube, and time stood still. I was going insane. Couldn't tell if I'd been in there for 1 min, 5 min, etc.
Trying to stay still so I wouldn't screw it up and have to go through this again.
And then, inevitably, your nose itches, or you feel the need to sneeze...
Awful experience.
If there was some music, or at least a tech keeping me updated on how far we were through the process it would have helped.

Good luck tomorrow Zig!

Exactly what I did. It was weird but all the noise actually put me to sleep

Yeah, I'm still worried about tomorrow. My mind has been trying to make sense of it but I just have this bad feeling it ain't gonna be happening. Wish they'd just put me out for the deal but I suppose I'll give it a shot with the Valium or whatever crap they want to give me:(:thumbsdown
Not looking forward to it.:skull

Ask for a place with an open MRI. The images are not as good, but it isn't a tunnel. I had one on my wrist for torn ligaments, it was the worst and I have had them for my low back and head in the past. The position they locked my wrist in was horrible for 30 minutes.

What's wrong with your shoulder? I'm currently in PT for a torn labrum.

Possible torn rotator or muscle/ligament tear. Also pain by the shoulder blade area, some sort of scalpula damage. I think I actually might have two injuries so he wanted this picture to determine what and the extent. Who knew racketball was so brutal.:skull

I've done both several times unfortunatley. Open costs more. That why they ask you if you're claustrophobic. Or over 200#s
you say yes, ins. pays for the Open.
Much better. Like a 5' pancake literally 3" off your nose but you can see all around you to the sides.
Highly recommended.

Do you have a complete loss of strength in addition to the pain? If you still have strength, it isn't the duff.
