(Defiance police are investigating the cause of death of a Michigan woman found in Defiance Tuesday evening, May 27. The body of Kristin Bates, 57, Boyne City, was recovered Monday morning on an island in the Auglaize River near Defiance’s Riverside Park.
The investigation began at about 10:41 a.m. Monday when city police responded to a complaint about an unattended dog in a vehicle at 925 S. Clinton St., a business parking lot. The vehicle belonged to a missing/endangered person out of Boyne City, Mich., according to a media release issued by police. Officers then issued a BOLO for the missing person and opened an investigation to assist with locating her.
They received additional information at about 8 p.m. Tuesday when the Defiance County 911 Center received a call from a fisherman who reported a body on an island in the Auglaize River near Riverside Park.
The body was recovered by city police, the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office, the Defiance Fire Department and the Defiance County Coroner’s Office, and identified as Bates, the missing person. The cause of death is under investigation pending an autopsy by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, according to the media release.)
