I'm waiting till time permits for another oposite knee replacment meanwhile my gimpy gait throws my back out too , This week I went to our "home pharmacy" and grabbed an old unused script for Diclofenac (Voltarin) given after my hip repalcment withing hours It was the most pain relief I've had since my knee started acting up (bone on bone) apparently the cremes are OTC but the pills are prescription only , Called my Doc who renewed the script today

It doesn't work for me but I'm glad you're finding relief. I know what you're dealing with. My left hip is approaching replacement time and favoring it is making my knee and back hurt.

There's an RDP subforum for every other group imaginable. We need one for old fuckers complaining about their deteriorating bodies.

I use the Diclofenac cream on my hands after long days of hard work. I like Alleve better than Ibuprofen. And a half hour in the spa gets my back ready for work in the morning or ready for bed at night. LOL

Had an arthritic attack on my knee after Christmas. Could hardly walk.
Local Right Aid had only a generic. Took two applications of the cream directly about 4 hours apart.
Loosened up, third application, working well.
This stuff is the REAL DEAL.. I had used Australian Dream in the past with moderate results.
Read about it some more, Don't be mixing it with others.

A lifetime of working on boats, ships, walking steel decks, climbing ladders, stairs, slamming small boats over waves/wakes, etc. has fucked my back up royally. That's all on top of a separated vertebrae (form of spina bifida) in L5, which is a whole 'nother issue. The thing I've found that helps immensely is Lidocaine patches. Not the OTC ones, but the prescription ones. When my back gets bad, I put on 1 or 2 (depending on area-spread of pain) Lidocaine patches (8-12 hrs) followed by Salonpas Menthol/Methyl Salicylate patch for another 8-12 hours. Repeat as needed.

This helps the most in situations where the injury-defect is aggravating surrounding muscles, nerves, tendons, etc. (like sciatica). My whirlpool bath and an occasional Vicodin keeps me off the backboard.

I can relate. Planter fasciitis in one foot got me favoring one side and aggregating my bad back. Kept me with limited mobility for months.

Planter fasciitis is no joke. I had it in both feet, rolling my foot on a frozen bottle of water helped a lot

The worst part is that just about the time that my right foot started feeling better the left foot had a blowout and was worse than what I had been dealing with. I use a lidocaine cream and a anti inflammatory cream which gets me some relief but there are days I can’t even drive because just the pressure of the foot pedal for more than a few minutes becomes unbearable.

I've been dealing with this in my right foot for months now and it's getting worse. Also having issues with my right hip which gets painful when driving for any extended time.
Looks like I'm making an appointment with my Dr to see if they are related as it goes from my hip down to my foot.

I have only delt with it once about 10 years ago but it lasted for a few months

This whole thread feels like a roll call for the Walking Wounded 😅. I'm in the same boat, old injuries stacking on new ones like bad Tetris pieces. Voltaren cream's part of my daily ritual now, along with stretching, ibuprofen, and muttered profanity.

One thing I tried recently that surprised me: I went the medical route with CBD. I was skeptical, but regular painkillers weren't cutting it and I didn't want to keep leaning on them forever. Found this Mamedica clinic, they actually connect you with docs who don't just hand out products, but help figure out what could actually help based on your pain and history.

Not a miracle cure, but it took the edge off just enough that I could move without wincing and maybe sleep without waking up like the Tin Man. Might not be for everyone, but better than just collecting creams and regrets.

For you guys using the Voltaren cream, if you happen to be at a Mexican pharmacy(like on your next RDP carnival cruise) pick up some of their 2.3% version. Waaaay better.

I'm looking for anything that works.....12 knee surgeries (2x TKR) on the right leg and 2 major shoulder openings. Left knee is getting bad. 6months ago the lower back got terrible, back fusion 4 levels coming up on June 23 and I'm told next year plan on a new left knee. The "normal" pain meds don't do shit anymore.....dilaudid is a maybe. It will be interesting how the back fusion goes with that pain YES we need an old fucker forum!!!!!!

Quick update on this. I’m finally back to normal. I do stretching routine's all the time . So much so that I can sit with my feet up in the recliner and bend my foot upwards so far that toes are pointing at my nose.

I'm with you. It ain't no fun.

For me, Dilaudid works well but it fades quickly. Ask your physician to prescribe fentanyl patches. The steady 24 hour relief is a game changer.

Try using a kitchen chair type cushion, when sitting for long periods. It has helped with my hip.

We have a cranky old man forum... It's called The Lounge. 🤣

I suffer from plantar fascitis and have for years. I finally figured out that it was the deep cushioned insoles on shoes that really made it bad. For me I have to stretch the tissue out to get any relief, so I started wearing shoes without a lot of insole cushion, the best thing is a good pair of flip flops that are broken in and confirmed to my foot, but those really suck when I shoveling snow in the winter. If I wear anything with a soft insole I won't be able to walk the next day, and pain killers only work so much. No joke the best shoes are FootJoy golf shoes or cowboy boots. Just a thought for anyone that suffers from the same.

I feel for anyone that has to live with chronic pain.

It would be worthwhile to speak with a nutritionist because some changes in diet, along with natural supplements, can be very effective tools in pain management. Also, not to beat a dead horse because there are so many other threads about it, but a significant reduction in alcohol intake will help too.

Boaters old folks home thread.
I can walk maybe 20 yards then my hip misfires.

Grand Daughter brings her German Shepard service dog to steady her on vacation and I have to borrow it.

I've been wearing them for over 20 years.
I bought two cases, they sent the wrong size, asked me then to drop them off at a Shoes for the needy site here in Simi, and sent the correct size. Pickup bed full of new shoes.

LL Bean did the same with Duck Boots. Sent the wrong width. Nice people.

BTW and way off topic:

LL BEAN is open 24/7 only closed one day since 1912. Problem with our Duck Boots are the kids borrow them and they never come back.
Whodathunkit, wildly popular with girls. Daughter knits thick wool sox and correct fit is dialed-in by how many pairs of sox they put on. Always been that way with LL Bean Duck Boots.

I hear they haven't changed in 113 years, same boot.

Keep us up dated.
We wish all the best .

I've had epidurals and they have been very helpful.

For those of us with joint, neck, back, hip, etc. pains, I fully recommend finding a good Osteopath (DO - Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). For nearly 40 years, I've had DOs as my Primary Care Physician. They are, and can do everything, a MD can, but have a more holistic view. Think of them as a combo Medical Doctor/Chiropractor. As far as joint or spinal manipulation, they do more pressure/trigger point stuff than the snap-crackle-pop, manhandling wrenching around that chiros do, although they will bend you into a pretzel, if that's whats needed. A long time DO I had would tell me that half of his OMT work was reversing and correcting the damage that Chiropractors had done.

There ARE good chiropractors out there, and I know people who swear by them. But for me, one Doctor handling the all the maintenance works best.

Been debating for several days with myself on if I should step into this thread, and bare my soul.
Many of you know my story. Multiple level disk replacement in my Lumbar spine some 12 years ago. I have advanced degenerative disk disease, sciatica, degenerative arthrtitis etc in my lower back. I was hurt badly in a water well drilling incident when I was 19, had over 100 stiches in my lower back muscle severed all the way to the spine. The pressure on my spine and lower body blew the seams out of a brand new pair of 501s.
Then 26 years on the job, 18 months on a task force where I didn't have to wear a duty belt. Then transfer back to a position where I did, and putting that 23lb duty belt back on aobut killed me, one day I realized I couldn't feel my left leg.
Off to doc. Thus endeth my career.

I live with chronic back pain every day. On a scale of 1 to 10 it idles at about a 5. On bad days...well it gets a lot worse.
About a year post op I was wearing a 75mg fentanyl patch and had tramadol for daily pain help, vicodin for bad days and valuim for muscle spasms in my back, which are a real mofo.
I have never abused any of it. Saw too much of that at work. However, abotu 3 years ago I had a talk with my doc and we cut the vicodin outta the pucture completely.
I found I could function, sort of, without it.
About a year ago I started hating the patch deal. The insurance and pharmacy hoops my doc and I had to go through every year were absurd, and growing. more than I wanted to deal with, and my doc's ofice, which is staffed by some of the greatest people in the world...were doing far too much BS on my behalf.
I started plotting a way off of the things.
I knew the pain was gonna get worse, but I decided I was done. I felt like the time was right. There is no "standard way" to wean someone off of those things...that doesn't include another opiate...and I am done with that shit.
About 3 months ago I made a decision.
So, when we changed the patch every 3 days, I simply cut about 10% of it off. the patch is about 1.5 inches square. I would cut 10% and do two patches that way, then cut another 10% and run through another, until I was down to about 20% of the original size of the patch, and at that point we just pulled it. For the first time in about 12 years no patch.
Yes...my pain has increased. No question about it. I will work around it and find a way to deal with it...I even have a couple of friends really lobbying me to try some CBD alternatives. I know nothing aobut that stuff...and no the irony is not lost on me...

My digestion has improved dramatically. I am no longer a slave to the whims of some bean counter at the insurance company or the complete catastrophe that is todays pharmacy system, both of which regularly ran me down to damn near the last minute gettng my script.
I willl find alternatives for pain management. I know they are out there, but I am done with the damn fentanyl patch. Yes, it works, but for me it was time to get shed of that deal. So I did. I am not suggesting anyone fighting chronic pain should do what I did, I am just sharing my story.

Has anybody tried Voltaren for Sciatic pain relief?
I tried it but no noticeable "huge" improvement , when mine (or my lower back) gets too much I take two alleve gel caps and two tylenol also aspercreme roll on , I have for what its worth seen a decent improvment with my near 30 LB loss . My Back surgeon Buddy says stretching and walking will help as well

I took Voltaren for a few years for what the doctors called reactive arthritis, it worked very well. I recently tried the gel on Sciatic pain, and it had little to no effect. I'm taking Meloxicam now and it works fairly well. I'm just about to stop using it however, because PT and steroid injections have improved the condition a lot.

You guys with access to a pool, and back issues, here is a tip from my old PT guy, who was on staff with the SF 49ers back in the day.
He suggestted getting a water ski vest on and just hanging vertically in the pool, feet off the bottom, for a couple hours a day.
This was their first go to move with guys with back issues after a game and some guys swore by it. I did it a few times as I can't handle inversion, I am a bit of a control freak, (imagine that ) and ain't happy on those tables.
In summer time would do this at the lake for hours and it really did calm things down.
