Wrong, I HAVE read several peer reviewed articles on the subject, and have seen nothing definitive, just platitudes. Also some studies that were just silly, like N=<100, which have been cited and disregarded, because, well N=<100 subjects.

Did not know that story, not that smart. Always thought that a person muttering said line is expressing humility and being thankful and lucky for his lot in life. As the Bradford story goes, he was said to have made that statement as he was lead to his execution. He was considered by clergy of the era to be the closest in spirit to the Apostles themselves. He may or may not have said it, but I've always thought it to be along the lines of "God wills it", "God's will" or "Deus Vult".

I don't know if I necessarily believe that there was malicious intent. I try to see the good in people. Greed? Yes, that seems to be a motivation though.
